A girl popped up on my tiktok and she said that they will ALWAYS know when you’re one of them simply by how you sit or how you eat at a table. In a sense I get it. Old money is interesting on the outside. They do have this air to them of class and they don’t flash their wealth. It’s kind of like I knew someone who I had absolutely NO IDEA they came from money until I was just staring at their watch and saw that it was a Richard Millie (Idk watches idk if a watch person could spot that or not but). And eventually I saw their home. But like off rip nah. You wouldn’t know that. Knew of another kid (I went to a private college with a BUNCH of rich kids) that just casually talked of day trips to Europe and yacht parties?? I don’t think that’s a new rich type of thing. Not casually anyways. So I get the appeal. But they all aren’t amazing people and like you said the money is not clean. The kids^ I mentioned. Spoiled brats, talked down on poorer people (who weren’t even poor but compared to them..), did drugs like no other and got away with whatever because they were legacy. The old Money families looking back probably got their start in the 1800s or maybe 1900s, usually off the work of slaves, free black people, indentured servants, immigrants and poor people. I feel like to us it isn’t old but take Jeff bezos and Zuckerberg. And Elon musk. They’re billionaires. Technically their own creations but became billionaires off of the work of poor people not getting paid or buying and selling private info. Their generations to come will be considered old money. And whenever you hear of the obsession with old money it’s usually with young people, not necessarily people who KNOW really what it is. And as someone who isn’t poor now (well my family isn’t I’m a poor college student 🤡) but grew up right above the poverty line, most of the people I see obsessed with this old money thing are middle to upper middle class people. They’ve never had to struggle for anything but they want more. I’m not “jealous” of my friends and it’s okay to want better, but it’s odd seeing them complain about their “small” houses that have three stories, game rooms and multiple bathrooms meanwhile I feel like I can’t say anything because although I hate the one bathroom in my two bedroom home it’s better than being outside. I wished I lived in THEIR houses and they wished they lived in the houses of megabillionaires. Yes, dressing up like old money is FUN. And that’s all it should be. I do think there’s a certain air around clothes. I mean when I’m in lazy clothes my aura is just that. But when I get dressed up, I feel better, I walk straighter. When I wear a gown, I feel like I act fancier and more “ladylike” so I’m sure dressing like old money will give you a certain act, but it should be just fun

But again you can most definitely pass down good quality clothes, made with great fabrics, or it's rare unique pieces, it's usually classic designer pieces that you can sell as well. Obviously I'm not talking about Gap or Walmart clothes. To give you the example of a famous person, just before she died Lady Diana purged her wardrobe (the year she actually passed away) and sold clothes she wore when she was still with her ex husband, Charles. She managed to raise $3M for charities. There are non - famous people who auction their designer clothes every day, check Southby's vintage fashion, you'll see! They have pieces that date back decades ago. People buy for their own private collection, for museums etc. You don't see the value in clothes but tons of people do! Same for bags or luggage. Hell! There are fashion historians! The fashion industry is one of the very few industry that managed to increase its revenue during the pandemic, and I'm talking about billions and billions of dollars too. Keep in mind that just because you are not interested in something it does not mean people out there think like you. You're into jewelry others are into clothes.

​​@@talitam.8414just want to say, just because I'm super into fashion history and like archiving, but in a few hundred years, the clothes you got from your grandmother WILL be deteriorated to the point of if they even still exist in a recognizable form, would only be able to be used for display purposes. There's a reason everyone got mad at kim kardashian for destroying the Marilyn dress, there's a reason very iconic historical pieces aren't rented out and are meant to be wrapped and stored properly. Every time you wear a piece of clothing, that fabric deteriorates. It's normal. A lot of very old pieces that still exist today are from very wealthy people (royalty, nobility, etc.) Who didn't have to rewear their clothing the way the lower classes did (and even today) because they'd wear something for a while, get bored, and buy new stuff/have new stuff made and put their old clothes into storage. Don't get me wrong, I think it's lovely you have clothing that was passed down through family!! I just mean that it's silly to think that clothing doesn't deteriorate faster than jewelry or pieces of art, because if it didn't, we would have a LOT more historical pieces all over the world, and they would be on display all the time, but because fabric can be affected by sunlight and the environment, most historic garments are only brought out for very special occasions (like the coronation robe in the UK, for example. It's extremely old, but it's used once a generation (for the coronation), and then put away in climate controlled rooms and the pieces which are of significant importance, like a coronation robe, are regularly checked for deterioration and restored. I'll be the first to say how sad it is, because I'm a ho for fashion history and I'd love if clothes lasted forever and I could see what actual people actually wore throughout history and all over the world, like in the flesh lol

I want to highlight how common dissociation is among Gen-z, Daydreaming and depersonlization/derealization is just as common. Gen Z has already lived through several traumatic world events. We want to hold on to what we dont have, We want to escape from have we do. People often see new money as lesser, less classy, less intelligent and I think this is also from the appropriatation of poc. The styles that are mimicked in the way they dress, in music, in the way people speak. These people are also benefiting from poc. Most people see this though and tend to dislike it, rather it be because of appropriation or racism. New money is also seen as easy to lose, Old money has 'lasted' generations so it must be realible, right? Gen Z happens to be one of our newest generation and, as a result, suffer the build-up and leftover trauma and economic effect of what was left over. I think the real prob is that we reached an existential crisis where we're bored and have nothing else to do with our lives lmao. I don't think we have to go far to see we as a country aren't as great as we make it out to be. Not awful by all means but not the greatest. Blazers, turtle necks, high coverage tights, headbands, big blow-outs, dark-ish smoky/ neutral eyes and classy toned down dark red/ brown lips, dress pants or short-ish pencil skirts/ well fitting skirts… So if you enjoy the aesthetic but don’t want to call it “old money” because of the very good reasons that Toni mentioned, look into 90s fashion for adults.

I admire old money and I admire the come up stories. Having old money is a real flex though. Why would you want your family generations to struggle and inherit poverty stricken mindsets. It’s about building and leaving a legacy behind for future generations. I rather get a head start on building wealth from a bloodline of financially literate, money making individuals. Having to work for what you have is a flex too but if I had to choose though, I would love to come from old money.

Great video as usual but just wanted to say White Americans and Europeans ≠ Caucasians/People from the Caucus region. Those would be Armenians, Georgians, Azerbaijanis etc. Europeans really co-opted an entire ethnic groups identity based on racist “science”. Hoarding wealth is so crazy to me when you stop and think about it having more money than humanely possible to spend and still using immoral tactics to gain more to the point the only way you can figure out to spend it is by destroying the earth. But this over glorification explains the desensitization. I think wanted to dress classy is great but when we label it as “old money” we’re sorta pushing this idea that money and family lineage is what makes someone classy when I can think of 100s of people who are classy and middle or lower class

Almost all of the famous families of the gilded age that you mentioned were sorta thought of as new money during their time. They made their money through the exploitation of lower classes not through slavery (as the old money families of their time once did). All of the gilded age million and billionaires i guess we call them old money now. As you mentioned, it is difficult to maintain generational wealth and those who did benefit from land ownership and slavery of the true old money way term as it originally referred to, some do still have land and wealth, but for most of those family's their wealth today is quite modest. Their generational wealth is that they pass down is usually just a house and land not really finances. Though it is still something and a start many Americans don't have. I enjoyed your video.
