As per usual, this year has been filled with an insane amount of fashion trends, like the "no pants" trend, "quiet luxury", and the "coquette girl" trend filled with bows, and we of course must discuss them! Some were great, fun, and lighthearted, but others it seem have come from the faster and faster paced algorithms of social media platforms, and due to their rush nature they never really could stand on their own aesthetics.

I think part of "quiet luxury" be the materials in the items. Wool is far more warm and durable and less sweaty than polyester. A true wool sweater can range from 150-500 $ easy but the H&M polyester will look the same from a distance. But people don't know what makes these quiet luxury items special, and anyways this used to not really be luxury. My grandfather had a bunch of true wool sweaters. That was just what a sweater was before all clothes became plastic in the 90's or whenever that happened. It's so major in shoes where the leather seems to be skimmed down to nothing or just be plastic , the nails, wood, and steel shanks that used to put that boot together are all replaced with cardboard and foam. Now a shoe that will last you more than 1 year is going to cost you 200 $ and a boot with real nails and steel inside is 600 $. They've been cutting so many corners on the materials and construction that a 30 year old Doc Martin from the 90s might be a better shoe than a new one you buy at the store today despite the wear. That's how our economy has been running, functionality is less and less and less valued and consumers don't even know how to pick a quality product anymore. So we're all cold, our leather jackets start to molt plastic pieces after 6 months, our shoes fall apart and basic functionality is considered "luxury".

@@SaironiI think you’ve said it perfectly. Surely luxury should be what the material is, not the brand or anything else. It annoys me that if I want something that will last a long time, not only is it hard to find these days because everything is faux but, I’ll have to find a LOT of money to ensure it does. Even then it might not be made as well as in the past.

“quiet luxury” as a trend has pointed out that a LOT of people don’t dress for themselves rather for how others will perceive them. I’ll be the first to say, at the end of the day no one will remember or care if you wore a quiet luxury outfit. The ‘old money’ aesthetic obsession is for people trying to look like they’re in another social class. No one will think you’re ’old money’ showing up to your regular college class in your regular car. God I HATE this ‘trend’

Clothes that last decades don't have to be boring and bland, and bows can easily be put on to cutify an otherwise worn out jumper/dress from 8 years ago. Win-win!

The “quiet luxury” idea is also so silly because it is so narrowly defined and assumes the wearer is part of a social circle that wants to emulate the rich, urban, WASP-y, NYC kind of vibe. But serious money dresses appropriately for what they do and where they live. An old money woman in Maine likely wears LL Bean head to toe, while her counterpart in Florida might mix Chanel with loud Lilly Pulitzer patterns.

Honestly 100% agree with your take on the tank top trend. Where I’m from the tank top is absolutely a foundation garment used by everyone, not only to absorb sweat and oils, but to serve as an additional layer to keep you warm. An old term for it is basically “la maglia della salute”, aka “the shirt of health”. So it’s always been perplexing to see people not wear them underneath all their clothes.

LUKE!!! Your understanding of garments as a form of language is my favorite part of your fashion analyses. The part about everyone doing quiet luxury and it becoming an "EYE know that YOU know you aren't what you're portraying and you're just imitating something that will never be yours", metaphysical thing, reminds me of simulation vs simulacra where images replace the original. The emulation of quiet luxury has become a hyperrealistic and self-imposing image of the upper-class lifestyle and it only conveys that the person wearing that style understands the image of wealth in its most performative essence. We are still left knowing nothing about the individual's identity and everything about their sole ability to reproduce an image. It makes you wonder, what do people want to convey at the end of the day? Do they want you to think they are actually wealthy or do they just want you to know that they understand what wealth looks like as an image? and is there any social currency to gain in just the awareness itself? Amazing video as always!

What I feel like a lot of people don’t get about the quiet luxury look, is only about half of it is about brands. The other half is how the clothes fit, because rich people who care get their clothes altered/tailored. So it’s not just that Shiv, for example, is wearing a pair of super expensive wool trousers; it’s that they’ve been tailored so that they’re smooth at the waist and hip, the knee hits her knee and they’re exactly the right length for her shoes. It’s the combination of well made clothing *and* expert alterations that makes quiet luxury work and it’s the main reason those articles that tell you how to dupe the trend are bs.

Growing up in the late 90s and early 2000s baggy jeans were very in! But personally... I hated them so much 😭 in part, it was because of my body type. Most of the people you showed in baggy jeans are super skinny, so it doesn't really look bad on them but if you were like me very curvy and heavy you looked like a sloppy garbage mess lol 😂 Also, as a Chicana, sambas never go out of style 😎

Hmmm, so as a 6ft 1 thin black woman I have usually worn monochromatic subdued colors because it is more difficult to tell when they were bought due to the timelessness of the clothing. I do like to cry once and pay for good fabrics, flattering cuts and good tailoring. It is difficult to find these so I often own things for very long and employ a tailor to adjust when needed. Trends are more trouble than they are worth so this look has been my uniform for the last two decades and for the foreseeable future.

People acting like “quiet luxury” is this new thing is extremely funny to me considering the rich have used subtle wealth signifiers as a kind of secret code to make themselves feel better than ‘the poors’ for CENTURIES. And normal people have tried to copy those signifiers for CENTURIES (through fashion but also manners, speech etc). My question is why would normal people want to encourage the most insecure, insufferable wasps of past and present to make fun of them as they try and fail to cosplay their lavish lifestyles? Please, these old money assholes already think you’re a peasant, don’t act like one! Have some dignity and be interesting 😭

Just thinking about what you were saying about quiet luxury and tank tops - the classism of it all! It's repulsive in ways I can't articulate when downing my coffee during my lunch break, but the crossover of classism and luxury fashion (the tank tops, distressed clothes costing a mortgage, quiet luxury, etc) is so.... aaaaah. I am sure someone else can use better words than I can!

“To watch them actually moto and cross” took me out 💀 one note, I had a fashion blog in 2013 (lol) and I remember “reporting” about the no-pants trend back then but with really tiny exercise shorts instead of just straight-up underwear- I like where the trend has gone in just a decade, maybe we will be actually pantsless in 2033 😂 final note, even though you only see skinny ppl in the black undies/tights trend and not really on regular-sized ppl IRL, I think this could be the easiest trend to rock for all body types - all you need are briefs, tights, a statement shoe and a comfy sweater! Bonus if everything is in the hot colour of the year, bright red ❤

Personally being a calmer more laidback person myself, I enjoy the no logo “quiet luxury” look. Nice soft beiges and creams, more softer muted tones overall, but the funny thing is half the stuff that would fit the category that I have are pretty cheap. Got lucky with my finds in the H&M sale section 😂 It’s just the people that purposefully flaunt whatever Gucci or other big brand that irk me and give it a bad name. It’s meant to be a nice cozy style, none of that bravado

I like the QL trend for inspiration when it comes to picking fabrics and creating patterns for my new wardrobe pieces. I just finished a beautiful long Tweed skirt suit and 2 silk slip dresses ,1 black, 1 champagne ( which I wore over the holidays) and I'm about to start a pair of trousers and a vest to go with the skirt suit . I've definitely jumped onto the natural fiber bandwagon working now with silks, linen, wool, tweed ,cotton, leather/ suede ,hemp ,bamboo, cashmere, mohair...I'm working on a capsule wardrobe of pieces that will last at least a decade ( but hopefully a lifetime ) so very classic silhouettes .

I loved this video and the fact that you talked about quiet luxury, but I must say that even Anna Bey said in a video that in her opinion the "quiet luxury" and "stealth wealth" trends were quite foolish and that on her channel she didn't want to teach people how to emulate the rich, but to help people improve themselves, even when it comes to fashion; in any case she didn't exactly started this trend, or better, she didn't make it mainstream in any platform because it is many years that she talks about "classy ladies" on her channel and how to become one, not try to fool other into thinking that you are one.
