Here is an honest review, about how it is to own a Custom Honda CX Cafe Racer during 5 years, including all its problems during this period.
In case you don't know, the builder of the Honda CX 650 Cafe Racer shown on this video, is Leonel Ribeiro, owner of "Oficina das Motas", located in Portugal.
The name of this Custom Honda CX Cafe Racer, is "Frankenstein".
I hope you like it.
My special thanks to Pedro Torres, for his great help with my English.

As a cyclist I have learned that the pain in the arms and back comes from weak core muscles. It is important to keep the core strong. Doing so has helped me ride my bicycle for 6+ hours at a time when I'm out on those 160+km rides and has prevented me from having discomfort on my motorcycle.

Great honest video Vitor It was nice to see Frankenstein again. She has aged well, the patina adds to her character. I have also had my head gasket leak. and the advice you gave me on how to retension the head was very helpful I have the same exhaust pipes as yours and I have added baffles to mine. But your sounds amazing I love my CX650 Cafe and I know guys that have ridden tham across Australia, they are a very reliable bike

Thank you Dear Steve. I think your exhaust pipes sound as good as the ones from "Frankenstein". The only difference, is probably on the way i record the sound. @RACER_TV
@RACER_TV Жыл бұрын
Loool. No. The truth is, this voice is not exactly real. I use this "robotic" voice created by software, because I'm Portuguese, and my bad English accent (and voice), can ruin the documentary character that I like for my videos. I already tried a real British voice in one of my videos, and, surprisingly, almost everyone hated it. Curiously, the robotic voice sounds really very real and professional for most non-English Speakers.:) Thank you my friend for your support. :) Cheers.

Time flies! Glad you still enjoy your racer! Ergonomics is really important when travelling. Therefore I would prefer a scrambler, or even better multiple bikes. One for "shorter & fun rides", one for touring. Recently I bought a Suzuki Freewind, which has some great potential to become a scrambler, and now ridden with it 1100km in 3 days. Mainly local roads, even some kilometers offroad, around 20 hours riding in 3 days. Of course alot of resting and sightseeing, but no pain in back, arms knees ... this simple bike impressed me!

Excellent video Racer., I think Frankenstein is ageing very well. Bikes of any age can have problems, nothing is perfect. Thank you my dear friend for sharing your perspective. I can also testify that on long trips with good and straight roads, the riding position is not so bad, because the wind helps to keep the body up straight. The problem here in Portugal, is that most local/national roads, are full of curves, demanding a lot of braking and gearbox work.But like you said, after we getting used to, our body seems to be more and more resistant to fatigue and pain. You too. Thank you. :) Cheers.

i’ve been watching your channel for a few years and never have commented, but want you to know how much i have appreciated your sharing of the great bike builds around the world. I have great respect for your keen eye and meticulous attention to fine details… this being said, I have had many motorcycles, none of which i have built. I also love bicycles, and ride a considerable amount on various frame types that don’t include road bikes. I’ve actually just built my own using a $150. walmart bought aluminum frame, which is the only part of the bike remaining. the reason i mention this is because through my cycling experience, i’ve learned that simple changes ( which are much easier to make on a bike ) can make a huge difference in overall comfort… my point in all of this is that when you are comfortable , and everything feels right, it makes the whole experience much more pleasurable, and leaves you longing for more…in my opinion, there is no good reason to compromise comfort for coolness, because you can have it all when you get it right…there is a formula that works for each of us. the key is finding it. with highest regards, ashley

Dear Ashley, Thank you my friend for all your kind words. I appreciate your support, and especialy your tips. I think i understood what you said, but there is another very important point, that i forget to mention on this video. I can also testify that on long trips with good and straight roads, the riding position on my CX is not so bad, because the wind helps to keep the body up straight. The main problem here in Portugal, is that most local/national roads, are full of curves, demanding a lot of braking and gearbox work. And this is what causes fatigue in almost any motorcycle. Everytime we break on a curve, our arms have to handle with our weigh. And for me, this is the biggest cause of fatigue, and not so much the riding position. But i think I will all explain this on a future video. Thank you so much for your help. :) Cheers.

I have run into many people that rebuild bike for the first time and want a cafe racer. They see the parts to put on the bike and ignore the internal requirements. As some one that has rebuild bikes, I have to explain that points, carbs, wiring, connections, voltage generation and regulation all require replacing on vintage bikes for daily riding. Neck and wheel bearings are 40+ years old. Of course, brakes need to be rebuild. Too often the coils are damaged by time. They over heat and the engine doesn't run when they get hot. It becomes a machine that they ride on the weekend and work on it all week. All the tweeking they have to do to get the modifications to run right. Vintage motorcycles come with vintage issues.

Just a personal experience: I can definitely use mine on a daily basis, reliability wise I haven't really modded anything on a mechanical level that made it more unreliable or over-complicated or anything, the donor has always been a fairly simple machine with very little problems of her own. I have been working extensively on electric/wiring etc to be able to fit certain mods but they've worked fine ever since. Long rides? Not with my mono racer seat Comfortable? Not with my mono racer seat 😂 Still enjoy my 1 hour/2 hours trips though which to be honest is all I did even when it was a regular bike, otherwise I would have gotten a maxi enduro or something.

Thank you my friend for sharing your own perspective. It seems your major problem is not realy the mono racer seat, but only the butt. Just as someone already said here: "I have one bike with a 300+ kilometer gas tank……I only have a 100 kilometer butt. Loool :) Cheers.

If the headlight lens is made of glass you can clean it with acetone (dimethylketone), if it is made of plastic you should have it polished internally by a coachbuilder
@RACER_TV

The headlight lens is made from plastic or acrylic. The main problem, is that the friction that causes the dust, is inside, and there is no way of removing the lens because it is fixed/sealed.

Hi. I have been working on the design of the side covers during the last weeks, and I think I finally "hit the jackpot". It is now more beautiful than ever. Very classic, simple, loads of personality, and extremely elegant. But there is more. I finally found the perfect Builder to make it happen. I can no longer trust on Leonel's promises. I am very disappointed with him. I still haven't contacted the new builder, but I am sure he will be extremely interested on building my XS Project. Thank you for asking. :) Cheers.

What I've learned from my Cafe Racer, a 1979 Moto Guzzi V50: - No, it's not reliable because sooner or later you'll find yourself at the side of the road; - Yes, it's reliable because there's no electronics except for the battery, and the whole bike is made of literally a handful of components, so whatever problem it may have you only need a bit of knowledge and the same 3-4 tools from your basic toolbox to McGyver the shit out of it; - Yes, you can travel with it, those engines (especially the 2 cilinders, low power, high torque ones like mine) love to run at constant, reasonably high rpms, so you can basically stay on the highway at normal cruising speed for as long as you have fuel; - No, I would not suggest to travel very long distances with it because your back will run out before the fuel; - Carburation is a bitch. You change the silencers? You have to do it all over again. You change air filters? Again. Did you do it for summer and now it's winter? Again. - It's a pain in the ass because cops really really really love to pull you over for the most creative reasons. I would suggest to have one for the fun of it, for dirtying your hands, for the learning experience and for weekend trips, *definitely* *not* as your main/only mean of transport.

Lool. Curiously, the robotic voice sounds really very real and professional for most non-English Speakers.:) Cheers.

Oned a Hayabusa and you would think it was a proper bike for long fast trips. And it was to a certain degree when you fast got worn out in the body because of the rider position. I then bought a Triumph Street Triple and now i could travel far beyond what i could on the Hayabusa without resting.

@RACER_TV

The easiest way, is to fit/adapt a new steering stop, on the triple tree. You can do this with a screw, or a little solder. The steering angle will be limited, but this is the only way to prevent fuel tank damage. Cheers.
