We still buddies. No sweat man. The 281 is like that car that was a boat and a car. Lol. not a good race saw and it’s not a good long bar bucking saw but it is both lol. Had to make a trade off for some torques for the speed. But would never make it as a full race saw. It’s just a get together saw. Supposed to be for fun. I’m glad you like it. Hopefully the negative comments people jab here and there about it can just be ignored from now on. For the guys that told me I built a bad saw because it got beat by a 65cc saw well. Guess what I can beat a 660 with an ms250 in the right size wood. Power out and how fast it cuts in a certain size wood are 2 different things. That is all take care Boedy and call anytime you need
@novicelumberjack2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Pat. I didn't know anyone was saying you built a bad saw, and clearly they don't have a clue. They 365 couldn't even make three cuts before it wouldn't run right. It's an absolute purpose built race saw that would fail if you just let it idle for too long. Mind blowingly fast, sure...but I'm confident that I could take yours out and actually work it all day. Two very very different setups.

Chipping can happen working with Nikasil plated cylinders. To help prevent that I use a diamond file on the base of the cylinder but have to file with light pressure. I put a chamfer on it before the machining the base of the cylinder so flaking does not happen. You can pick up diamond files at harbor freight.

I got a meteor cylinder for my farmertec 288. It wanted to flake so badly so I drew out where I wanted my port to go with my diamond ball bit and peeled the plating off the inside of the groove with pliers, then ground up to the groove. When I was done, the port was pre chamfered so that was cool.
@novicelumberjack2 жыл бұрын
Sounds like a lot of work! But got the job done.

Ouch :-( There IS a time and place for hyway/meteor... when OEM is no longer in production and NOS is unobtanium. If they'd figure out their plating adhesion they'd be onto something... but they haven't.

Maybe they'll figure it out eventually.

I’ve had the same problem with the titan nickel cylinders once the flake it separates all the way around. The cheap cylinders are much easier. I like the war hawk cylinders
@novicelumberjack2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, a cheap cylinder is okay to take a risk with, but this Meteor was not cheap. I won't buy them again unless I just have to.
@bryanmarks40702 жыл бұрын
I had the same problem. I had to use small single cut burrs and make sure the burr was spinning into the port so it wasn’t pulling the platting off if that makes sense. Also I used diamond burrs. It’s super slow but saves the plating.
@novicelumberjack2 жыл бұрын
I understand completely. I tried to do exactly that. Cut into the ports, not away from them.
@cajun31972 жыл бұрын
Not going to see this guy porting no meteor or hyway cylinders ever. It is my understanding that they are both casted in the same factory but meteor is just plated in Italy. Both coating are too brittle in my opinion. If you want a good replacement for a stock cylinder not to port may be fine. I don’t trust them however

Question . I have a 281xp, needs piston, OEM cylinder in good shape. Should I just get a piston , or up grade to the big bore (from 52mm to 54mm) kit with piston & cylinder . My concern is will i lose compression . Or keep the higher compression 281xp cylinder & just get a piston . What would work better?

I would definitely stick with the OEM cylinder and just get a new piston and rings.

Can you put a small chamber with your porting tool on the bottom of the cylinder before machining the base. May prevent the tool from picking up on the plating during the cut.

If you ever want a good used OEM - let me know. I have a saw parts guy that is very reasonable and will take care of you. Titanikel cylinders will do the same. If you're cutting the base anyway I'd try a Warhawk - they actually aren't terrible. Problem is they won't last as long. Total BS that $200 cylinders do this.

I have to say that I especially love your Poulan content. I like the old green machines myself. Everyone seems to hate them. I don’t care.
