I had to laugh as Amber and Rob are talking about a second dude and don’t get there twins and they are Scottish, the only time I rarely claim my Scottish ancestry over my Danish Viking ancestry, considering we raped and pillaged the Scots for hundreds of years on Viking crusades, I consider myself a full Dane even though my mother heartily disagrees🤣. Both sides run true in my veins. I always liked the song “Irish girls are pretty”, because they are. 🤘

They sing in their native Scottish accent and are proud of it! Their record company wanted them to sing in a more “American” style voice, but they refused to do so. I’m glad they did, they would have lost their originality! Though it’s interesting that their accent is slightly softened when singing, it comes out much stronger when they talk normally! They wrote a song about it and its off their first album. The track is called “Throw the R away” The whole “Sunshine On Leith” album is pretty much flawless, there’s only one weak track on it (Come On Nature). Try “Letter From America” (Band Version) and “Make My Heart Fly” (Band Version) for a slight variation from the Reid brothers.

The Proclaimers are from Scotland. When an English record producer suggested they try to lose their accents when they sing, they wrote the song "Throw the 'R' Away". They are essentially a one-hit wonder in the US, but have many hits in the UK: "Letter from America", "Sunshine on Leith", "I'm On My Way" (which was in the movie Shrek), "What Makes You Cry", "Let's Get Married" and my favorite "Don't Turn Out Like Your Mother" (if you react to that one, be sure to listen to the very end)

It’s the proclaimers it’s them! Craig and Charlie Reid twin brothers originally from Edinburgh Scotland. A great song to sing when you’ve had a couple. Being such a catchy and popular song it’s amazing that it only made number 11 UK when it first came out in 88 but went on to be number one in several countries around the world Eg Australia and New Zealand. and eventually made number three on billboard usa in 1993. It is a staple of their catalogue. And they have said it earns five times more money than all their other songs together. It must feel so great to know that you have written a song that everybody loves and jumps around to

But that's not what people mean when they question whether someone has an accent. They mean an accent relative to their own. If an American is asking their American spouse whther someone has an accent it's implied they mean an accent that isn't vanilla American.

And just when I thought couldn't love this channel anymore, we get a reaction to the Proclaimers. So a quick fact file and some requests. 1) They have strong Scottish Fife* accents which they use frequently in their songs. It really fits with the whole genre of folk rock, which is my favourite style of music. Folk rock tells a story in such a beautiful way. It has so much relatabilty and is often sung among large groups of people. 2) The song is very catchy. So much so that it's a British institution that has become globalised. Everyone in Britain knows that song. It makes people smile and join in, which is what music should do. It's my go-to Karaoke song. 3) Yes, it's a fun song but you're right in identifying their voices as giving a whole lot more. 500 miles is the catchy one that everyone knows. It's at least a 9 out of ten and imo they still have songs that are even better. I suggest you react to: 1) Sunshine on Leith- which has become the best 'soccer' anthem for Hibernian FC 2) Letter from America They are simply amazing! And whilst we're on the subject of Folk Rock, here’s a few suggestions I'm sure you'll love: (Female Friday) Big Yellow Taxi by Joni Mitchell Sexuality by Billy Bragg (Has performed alongside the Proclaimers) Graceland by Paul Simon Me and the Farmer by the Housemartins I love your channel so much. Highlight of my day! Xxx * Fife corrected from Edinburgh (Thanks Paul)

One minor correction there bud. That is without any shadow of doubt a FIFE accent not Edinburgh, trust me I'm a fellow Fifer. Their family are from Leith and they're Hibs fans so most folks make that mistake. They were brought up in the wonderfully named village of Auchtermuchty 😃🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿😃

@@paulsmith2516 thank you Paul. Happy to be corrected. I've just seen on Wikipedia they grew up in Edinburgh, Cornwall (surprisingly) and then Fife. So a bit of an Edinburgh influence but you're quite right. Paul, am I right in thinking "haver" is Scottish slang that means to babble or talk nonsense?

Oh, my. Another great 80s hit from Scottish twins Craig and Charlie Reid. I actually had to look up if they had ANY other hits in the US... and they didn't. They did have a few other bangers, though. "Sunshine on Leith" is a great song. This song (and bits of the video) was in the Johnny Depp movie Benny & Joon.

What? “Fun”? the Proclaimers are a Scots folk rock duo consisting of the twin brothers Craig and Charlie Reid, and they’ve had more than a couple of BIG hits to their name, including “Letter from America”, produced by none other than Gerry Rafferty, of Baker Street fame, (another one to react to) which reached No. 3 in the U.K. singles chart; the second album, “Sunshine on Leith” spawned FOUR hit singles, this one, the title track “Sunshine on Leith”, “I’m on my Way”, which was very popular in Australia and in the UK (and which you should also cover as a reaction song), and “Then I met you”; Yes they do have a strong Scots accent, being born in Leith, the port town of Edinburgh and brought up in Auchtermuchty, they kept the accent because they sang about local Scots things which they felt would not be well-seen with a fake Anglo-American accent; they’ve produced 11 albums since 1983 and have sold 5 million albums worldwide since then; they are political activists and strong Scottish Nationalists, supporting the Alba Party in Scotland…..

I lived for 36 years in The Dean Village, in the heart of Edinburgh, 10 minutes walk from Princes Street which is the main Street in the city but down a steep hill in a valley under a wide Bridge over a river that runs through Edinburgh. A lot of traffic runs over that bridge coz it's the main route to the North out of town but the noise disappears as soon as you are at the bottom of that hill. A real fairy tale place and as picturesque af and I couldn't believe my luck when I was able to buy a flat (apartment) there. For a while at least one of the brothers lived more or less opposite me. I couldn't tell if I was seeing one brother or both of them at different times and if I did see them together, I didn't know if they both lived there or one was visiting the other. They are completely identical. They look exactly like each other and at the same time like absolutely no-one else. I never spoke to them because we respect people's privacy in Scotland. Nothing to do with the song but hey, I haven't had many chances to boast of brushes with celebrity. 😁 For the record, this is not really my kind of music and I tried hard to dislike it but it's impossible to do.

A great Scottish duo, the twins have many brilliant songs, a couple to listen to are Sunshine on Leith, which has been adopted by Edinburgh football team Hibs, who are from Leith and the Proclaimers ardently support. The other is I'm on my way, another catchy tune.

In Scotland, majority of the time (or at or near the close of a party) that involves a DJ, especially at New Year this tune is played. We all gather around in a linked circle and move in and out, (sometimes if it's a birthday the person stands in the middle) we are then primed and ready for Auld Lang Syne if its Hogmanay. Other times at a party, if by that time everyone is mega drunk, we just bounce up and down when the chorus plays. Many a time I've felt as if we are going to go through the floor if it is an event upstairs. There is a newish musical using their music named after one of their songs called 'Sunshind on Leith". It's about two soldiers returning from a tour from Afghanistan, trying to find love, going through family problems and getting back to normality. It's all about love and commitment. The other big song they had was 'Letter from America'.

Letter from America Sunshine on Leith I’m on my Way Are three songs I’d recommend from The Proclaimers. Although I don’t think they made much of an impact on the U.S (other than this song) they have experienced a long career in the U.K. (and are still going strong). They have a very loyal following and are very much loved in their homeland of Scotland.

So what were the Proclaimers proclaiming? Well, there's a funny interview they did on the David Letterman show where Letterman is frequently going "What are you guys saying?" but Craig and Charles weren't going to adapt, they spoke Scottish all the way through. That's what they proclaimed: they're Scots and aren't going speak "The Queen's English."

Ha! When at a sales conference evening do and our Scottish sales director was doing the serious stuff of saying we had done a good job and handing out awards etc. The band behind him looked a bit bored so I started a chant of "500 miles" they started to play , so he ended up singing the whole thing. Glorious. He knew every word. Got a raise that year too.

So so so many great things about this amazing song! Including the Benny & Joon video. From the beat to the arrangement to the twin brothers' harmonies and Marco polo style of vocalizing. But the thing i like most about it is that it has three full and distinctly different verses and they don't skimp on the choruses either. All just a little bit different and fresh. Fun vibrant instrumentals throughout and a perfect ending. Though I want to listen to it again and again it never makes me feel like it ended too soon as do some other unique and catchy songs. 5 stars
