My distant relatives made a lot of money from bootlegging during prohibition in New York city and the money was then used to start legitimate businesses which are still operating today.

To say that Roosevelt ran on an anti-prohibition platform is reductionist nonsense. Sheesh, America had more to worry about than just legalizing booze. The Great Depression was in full swing, and Roosevelt was running as a radical reformer.
