Funny fact: Carrie Nation didn't use a hatchet until her husband made a joke about it. After smashing a few saloons with just rocks, Mr. Nation jokingly told his wife she should use a hatchet to do maximum damage to the places. A fact about the moonshine stuff: during prohibition, many moonshine runners had tuned up cars to outrun the police. After prohibition, they had no need to run from the police to sell it, so they started racing each other for money and respect. In 1948, a group of men got together in a hotel at Daytona Beach to establish a sanctioning body for these early stock car racing events. That sanctioning body became what we call NASCAR

In my home town, Cincinnati Ohio, there is a bar named after Carrie Nation called "Nations" (the door handles into the bar/grill are hatchets). It describes her movement and what she stood for. But the best thing i can say is what she said when arriving there. She said, "I would have dropped from exhaustion before I had gone a block." due to the amount of saloons on one of the streets, and not being able to hatchet everything. It's ironic of her fighting against alcohol and then having a bar named after many years later. And those wondering, yes the food and drinks were delicious there.

My paternal grandparents made beer and wine in their basement. Well, actually, my grandmother made the beer and wine from recipes passed down through her family. My grandfather owned a produce store so he could supply my grandmother whatever she needed. The local ice cream truck driver supplied the empty root beer bottles for my grandmother to bottle the beer and wine in. My dad recalled hearing “pop-pop-pop” noises at 1 AM from the beer bottles that were over-carbonated. It was a great business model. My grand father could write off whatever produce was used as spoilage, the ice cream man sold adult root beer as well as kids root beer so everything was listed as root beer. No doubt they supplied some local speakeasies. My grandmother even had a potato beer recipe.

Extra info: The reason that many doctors started prescribing small amounts of alcohol was to treat the MASSIVE number of alcohol withdrawal cases that were pouring into their offices. For more info, look up the symptoms of delirium tremens . Bitters became popular around this time as a way of bypassing the prohibition laws. They had juuuuust enough alcohol content when added to a drink to stave off the tremors.

Fun Fact: During Prohibition southern bootleggers would modify their cars to go faster than normal vehicles making it quite easy to outrun the cops during their rum runnings. In their downtown they started racing each other for fun, then local people started coming out to watch them. And make a long story short that is how we got NASCAR. The end :D Wow thanks for all the likes! :D

Fun fact: the government of New Zealand also attempted prohibition around the same time, and very nearly managed to make it happen. They passed a national referendum in 1919, and the people who voted for prohibition actually slightly outnumbered those who voted against it... until 40,000 troops returning from World War I came back and swung the vote in the other direction.

Here in Finland we had prohibition for 15 years to to 1932 (Iceland also had it for the same period I believe). There wasn’t as much issues as in America. Although there was some smuggling and home brewing and recentment how wealthy could just ignore rules. And there wasn’t tax income from alcohol. But the spirits consumption went down and Nordics to this day have very strong alcohol policy regarding where alcohol can be sold and what time.
