In the 1970's I owned an AR-XA turntable which is as manual as you can get. No tonearm lever and speed change required removing the outer ring of the aluminum platter. But having lived with a Denon DP51-F automatic turntable since 1983, I can't imagine owning a manual turntable again. The convenience of automated tonearm return at end of play is essential for me.

I'm not sure just how much people expect for $500.00 usd. Hand-made in Germany with the ability to change the stylus and sub platter (Project reply) make for a nice unit. The om30 replacement stylus makes a big difference. More metal would increase the price more than people realize. One thing is that the spindle hole on your vinyl need to not be tight at all because this contributes to wow/flutter in my experience. And with a better stylus comes the need for very clean records. I had a Rega P6, so I've had experience with modern turntables. Meh. I replaced it with a Pioneer PL-50L II semi-auto from 1980. It was refurbed by Captain Mark on youtube and it's fantastic. It sounds better than the Rega, the end of record left and shut off work great and frankly, the engineering from 40 years ago was much better than the new stuff. I also have a Sony PS-X600 full auto. There's no waiting for anything. Press the button and it immediately does what it's supposed to do. Again, it's 40 years old. It'd be great to see you review some tables from this time period. Regarding the cartridge, since there is no anti-skate adjustment, you're pretty much stuck with the OM series carts. You can definitely upgrade the stylus turning it into an OM20, 30, or 40 (which are very good). But that's about it, unless you find a cart the requires very similar counterweight/anti-skate settings. Just one thing people should know about.

I suppose they have more models coming, but this is actually the lowest level small auto chassis that Fehrenbacher builds. The biggest issues with it is there are no adjustments and it has a fixed spindle. The better slightly larger chassis which was used on discontinued models like the Thorens TD 190-2, TD 240-2, TD 103 A has a spindle that rotates and full tracking force and anti-skate adjustments. They also have the dynamically balanced ULM arm and a 78 speed option. I don’t know if they plan to introduce a model using that chassis, but if it’s not a lot more it would be better. Really surprised you didn't mention the wow and flutter. It seems pretty sloppy for a $500 turntable to have 0.27%, and it's the primary reason I've kept away from mid-level automated turntables. I mean, you can get a Fluance RT82 for nearly half that for 0.07%. If we want apples to apples, my dad's fully automatic Pioneer PL-512 from the early 1980s was 0.055% out of the box and still well under .2% today. It just seems like automatic turntables are back to square 1 much like new turntables were about 4-6 years ago. This isn't new tech, it shouldn't be such an issue to match past hardware. I'd like someday to get a new turntable that has the features of older ones without having to recap, clean bearings, and refill the tonearm damper fluid, but alas. I shall continue to wait.

Great review as always. Question: are vintage turntables worth it? If so, what to look for?
@thevinylattack2 жыл бұрын
It depends on the specific table.
@davidbalentine21102 жыл бұрын
I look for mass. The turntable should be substantial. At least 12 - 15 lbs (or more). The tone arm should have no looseness. Gently hold the head shell and twist/tug/push it. You should not feel any looseness (maybe just slightly, depending). Expensive tone arms have none. The tone arm should only move up/down, and laterally across the record surface. And it should do this freely. Another point on this... vintage (old) instruments such as a record player need cleaning and lubricating of the various bearing surfaces. Also, rubber parts such as drive belts should be replaced with new. Cartridges are often worn and/or dirty. With all these considerations (and more), it is probably better to follow recommendations from Chris and buy something new. That way, it will perform up to your expectations. Remember to factor in headache (or avoidance thereof) when considering purchase - not just price.

Cartridge... if you can buy a nice new cartridge, it might just sing.

I was curious how the turntable determined the size of a record. Does it assume that all 33s are 12", and all 45s are 7"? Or was it detecting it somehow?
@markopredovic3902 Жыл бұрын
Hi! You can operate with this turntable either in auto mode or in manual mode. If you have 12" which does 45 RPMs you simply switch to 45, lift the tone arm with cue lever, place it to the beginning of the record and put the arm down with cue lever. If you have 7" record which does 33 RPMs than put the switch to 33, lift the tone arm with cue lever, place it to the beginning of the record and again put the arm down with cue lever. It is not a rocket science :-)
@markopredovic3902 Жыл бұрын
At the moment i am using fully refurbished DUAL 1209. It is a multi record player. You can change middle spindle and you can put up to 6 records at the time on the record player. When having a party this is a must have function :-) And this turntable has the options for 3 speeds (33 1/2, 45, 78 RPMs). You can also choose the size of the record. On selector there are 3 available sizes (7", 10" and 12"). You can operate this turntable either manually or in full auto mode. Same as with ProJect A1 Turntable. If you use it on full auto mode, than once the turntable is finished with getting arm to the record all the mechanism shuts down. Only record turning motor is working, nothing else, automat has no tension of what so ever. So there is no distortions from automatic of any kind. And one of the most important things. Many DUALs, mine as well, has a floating chassis. Do research this topic. Which in combination with rubber feets under the turntable further damps any noise which may either come from hard bases, mechanics inside turntable, etc. And yes, it does have better and warmer sound than any of the same price range turntables you can buy today. It really is an excellent turntable with excellent sound and is of course enjoyed by any one that comes to my house. Cheers from Slovenia!

First, the platter is rotating about the spindle which represents a very crude bearing surface of which that c-clip is part. Second, the hole in the record is also rotating about the spindle. this was a very positive video I have seen 2 more reviews of this turntable they all seem to like it but have also complained about the plastic parts like the switches and other plastic parts for 500.00 I would like to see more robust parts and less plastic I have 5 automatic turntables from dual to garrard and bsr I like automatics grew up with them first bsr's and then several pioneer models and an onkyo computer controled from the early 80's the last 2 reviews said that this TT once the automatic cycle finishes and places tonearm on record that it disengages ,you did not mention that I like to know what these other guys were saying I know for a fact that all at least my automatic turntables once they place tone arm on record the automatic function all ways disengages they confused me like they were saying that the A-1 was the only one that does this all of my auto TT can be used as a manual without engaging the automatic start up what did they mean????? I know for a fact that both of these reviewers did not have much experience with automatic or did not care for them cause all they used was manuals maybe they read what the info said on this TT ,it would be nice to have someone with a little more knowledge of all TT's before reviewing them and giving false info I wish they could explain it a little better CONFUSED !!!! Wow?!... $500 USD for a ProJect "branded" turntable that is basically no better than an Audio Technica AT-LP60 with a better cartridge. If you really want a "new" fully automatic turntable, I think one is better off with an Audio Technica AT-LP3 / LP2X and a much better cartridge replacing the included AT91, as well as getting an external phono preamp with the cost savings (instead of this ProJect Automat A1). Vintage fully automatic linear tracking quartz direct drive turntables look and sound so much more appealing than the ProJect Automat A1.

I'd say this is definitely better than a LP 60.

@@thevinylattack In price and in "brand" only because of the better cartridge (OM 10 over the AT91)... Take it apart and do some electronic testing - a la Amirim at Audio Science Review to remove the subjective from the objective measurements. Anyway, some people will rather pay more for the Audi than the Seat or Skoda (built by VW with the same parts, engines and platform but different brand, design, marketing and price for each).

@@rxt744 Not true. The plinth is better, the platter is better, the tonearm is better constructed and so is the headshell. I don't know if that's worth the extra money to someone or not, but it's certainly a better-built unit.
@rxt7442 жыл бұрын
@@thevinylattack Fair enough, you did mention that the plinth was a better slab of plastic. The tonearm is debateable... it's the same low-end aluminium tonearm as the low-end Dual turntables (including the one that sold at Aldi last year), which is on par with the AT-LP60. Looking forward to the guys at Audio Science Review to take it apart for some scientific measurements. For $500 USD, there is better "value for money" fully automatic turntables than this over-priced low-end Dual rebadged as a ProJect with an entry level OM 10 cartridge (a Chevy rebadged as a Cadillac). Thanks for the review.

So did you actually experience this turntable in the flesh and touch it with your hands? Why do you not have any video of the turntable in use? I don’t understand why this is just a talking head video. I enjoy your channel but this is confusing
@JohnnyBeFilms2 жыл бұрын
It's got an extreme level of needle talk - why does nobody points that out? You can hear it from more than 10 ft!
@thevinylattack2 жыл бұрын
Possibly because we all plug it into a stereo when we review. I don't generally listen to a turntable that has no amplification.

It's so loud that while low level listening it just ruins the overall sound.

I am using DUAL-s and DUAL-s only. Multi record players. Not a single problem with turntable. You just need to buy refurbished one. And that is it. Sound is excellent! Went from 75 to 105 cartridge and it blews AT-LP120 out of the water. DUAL-s are extremely well made and sounding turntables.
