Hart mountain antelope refuge in Oregon is magical. Had two babies approach my group that had clearly never seen a person before.
@John-ld3hdАй бұрын
"was magical", most of the antelope population has drifted to private or public land with cattle. We will see if the fires this year help restore, and make Hart mountain desirable for wildlife like antelope again.
@dinobarb3452Ай бұрын
@ hart mountain is very suitable habitat for the pronghorn, not sure what you’re talking about. These animals are allowed to be on whatever land they like, they are the native ones, not the livestock.
@John-ld3hdАй бұрын
@@dinobarb3452 my point was the antelope generally prefer areas where livestock has been in the last couple years. While they can and do live on ground like Hart mountain or Sheldon, over time once the livestock is pulled off you see fewer and fewer. While I can't say I've seen it myself in those exact areas my friend who's family has been in Warner Valley for over four generations and is intimately familiar with them can attest to it. I can speak to areas with antelope in Nevada. Areas with recent cattle (by recent I mean from present to four years) activity I have observed higher antelope densities.

@@joannathesinger770 Yes the American cheetah (Miracinonyx) that lived on the plains for at least 2.5 million years until the arrival of the Amer-Indian people 16,000 years ago. They hunted pronghorns and horses. There were at least two species of this "cheetah" M. inexpectatus and M. trumani and both were larger than the African cheetah though completely unrelated to it. The arms race of speed between Miracinonyx and their prey horses and pronghorns is the reason those animals are so fast.

Here on the edge of Laramie, Wyoming we get them wandering through our front yard fairly often. Two, little known facts about pronghorn (aka "speedgoats"): 1) they squat to pee. 2) they usually will go under a barbed wire fence. You will see them approach a fence line, drop to their knees, and slide under the bottom wire. That is why sheep tight fences with woven wire on the bottom are a hazard to antelope. That said, I have occasionally seen antelope jump a fence. At speed they can hit about 55 mph.

Lions, buffalo, and antelope are all found only in both Africa and Asia, therefore it is actually misleadingly incorrect to call a puma a mountain lion, misleadingly incorrect to call a bison a buffalo, and misleadingly incorrect to call a pronghorn an antelope, the Puma (Puma concolor) is actually more closely related to cheetahs (genus Acinonyx) and the jaguarundi (Herpailurus yagouaroundi), bison (genus Bison) are a genus of true cattle (subtribe Bovina) with the closest living relative of both the European Bison (Bison bonasus) and the American Bison (Bison bison) being the Yak (Poephagus grunniens), while buffalo are an entirely distinct subtribe (Bubalina) from the true cattle (subtribe Bovina), and the word "antelope" refers correctly and exclusively to the taxa Tetracerus, Tragelaphini, Hippotraginae, Peleinae, Reduncinae, Antilopinae, Cephalophinae, and Neotraginae of the family Bovidae, while the Pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) is the sole extant member of a separate family known as Antilocapridae, which is actually more closely related to giraffids than to bovids, making the giraffes (genus Giraffa), Okapi (Okapia johnstoni), and Pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) the only extant members of the broader superfamily Giraffoidea.
