In this video, Mufti Abu Layth explores how the Quranic verse 29:14 describing the age of Noah was in itself an amazing example of the Divine Knowledge of history and languages. The Quran relates his age in the way of his own people.

@Mufti Abu Layth, many thanks indeed for your touch on Sura 29:14 where is stated that Noah (a.s.) dwelt among his people for a thousand years save fifty. Indeed there appear to be a linguistic difference between سنة (year computed by revolution of the earth round the sun) and عاما which is also counted as years. According to Imam Raghib, سنة is used to denote a year in which difficulty, drought, barrenness was being experienced while عام from which عاما is derived denotes the time frame in which there was ample ness of means, circumstances of life and abundance of herbage. Applying this understanding, we come to realize that the one thousand years mentioned by the Qur’an is the age of the Dispensation and teachings of Noah (a.s.) of which after 50 years Noah’s teachings began to suffer corruption among the people of his time. We again read in Sura 37:83 that Abraham (a.s.) was a “Shi’a” of Noah, meaning he was a follower of the teachings of Noah. This is to say Noah’s period extended up to the tome of Abraham, even up to the time of Prophet Joseph (a.s) until Moses (a.s) came with a new Shariah. Furthermore, I have read an Hadith in jamia al-sagheer by Suyuti ( and I am quoting from memory at this time) thus: ما من عام إلا الذي ينقص فيه خير ونزيد شر meaning therefore that an عام is a time when goodness starts to decrease and evil starts gaining ground. I cannot recollect the authenticity of this Hadith but the matn seem to corroborates the explanation of Imam Raghib, thus Noah (a.s.) did not lived up to 950 but it was his teachings that survived up to that time. Today when we refer back to the Islamic Calendar, it is as if the Holy Prophet (PBUH) is ‘ever living’ but the truth of it is that it is his dispensation that is still alive as Islam is the ever lasting religion. And my words should not be construed to mean I do not believe he is alive, I meant physically he is not but spiritually he is alive, while his dispensation is still enduring and everlasting.

I would agree that with time, our understanding of certain verses may become nuanced, ambiguous or vague texts may even possibly become clear. None of this, however, deletes or lessens the previous understandings, especially of texts that are evident. I also agree that it may be possible and plausible that in the Qur’an some things are written to reflect the time of the story in context. However, modern archaeological discoveries cannot be used as a reference for establishing such an understanding. The archaeologists can only conjecture that a. Any flood seemingly referenced in ancient artifacts, which may or may not be that in actuality was the flood of Noah. b. Can only conjecture that the artifacts found are pre-flood. These are theories that one would have to accept though they are not fact and should not be treated as such. c. That their interpretation of these artifacts are in fact correct. In reality, we may never know as those people are long gone. So to use this as some proof to establish the claim that the verse in Suratul Ankabut is not apparent in its meaning with the context of time understood by the original people of which it was revealed to is faulty reasoning. It would be much better to investigate time without trying to using science as a factor within it. There is no clear indication of how the people of Noah alayhi salaam understood and perceived time. There is no clear indication of whether time itself was different than what it is now in that age. We can’t even scientifically prove that such an age existed more or less pick out what time would be the time of Noah. We do, however, have an understanding of how we perceive time today and how we are directed to understand time in the Qu’ran and by the words of the Prophet, may peace and blessings be upon him. Therefore, those who want to have a right to conjecture about what it could mean and how time was perceived. However that doesn’t disprove or change the apparent meaning of that particular verse. Allah truly knows best.

It's called base. The Babylonian people did use base 60, hence where we get 360° for full revolution etc. This would be very impressive if true. More research probably needed. Thanks, this was an interesting attempt to explain the verse.

1000 years in base 60 is 216000 years in our base 10.

so take the opinion that it was 950 years until you have solid proof But understand why you take your stance since I have observed your tendancy to ignore or atleast not believe that Allah wills and it is and rather believe Allah will only do miracles that can be explained. Also "The word sanah (year) is used to highlight the difficulty of the years that Nooh (peace be upon him) spent calling his people. They were years of paucity in terms of goodness, rain and blessing (barakah), and in terms of the difficulty that Nooh (peace be upon him) encountered in calling his people, as they responded by turning away and persecuting him. Then after the flood and the destruction of kufr on earth, he spent years of abundance and ease. The Arabs refer to times of drought and famine as sanahand times of ease and plenty as ‘aam"

With respect, this interpretation is not "much more grounded" but a purely speculative eisegesis because of an embarrassment in allowing the supernatural to supervene in the world. The direct implication of such an understanding is that there is a falsehood in the Qur'an since your claim is that what the Qur'an claims is not true on the face of it. If you can ask "why did God use two different words for 'years'?", one can ask why did God not add a clause such as "as they (The Sumerians) count" to remove the apparent falsity?
