Well I like the video and found it informative, but it's a little strange to put the political lean in the cons. It's actually a big reason why so many are moving to the Bible belt. I'm not very religious or very political, but I know for a fact that I'll never lose my constitutional rights in an area like Knoxville. I imagine a lot of people agreed with me and that's why you hid your like/dislike.
@BenBarredo

You're right about that. I was just struggling to come up with a negative and if you're liberal, that's a negative. But I get calls from Cali at least once a week with people wanting to move here for that reason.

@@BenBarredo I am from California and want a more conservative place to retire. Truth is, you will find cringe worthy zealots on both sides of the aisle, where ever you go. The crap I have heard coming from peoples mouths have made me want out of here. Aside from the stupid high cost of living, a conservative person in public is completely ridiculed. You HAVE to keep your mouth shut in public here unless you are a liberal. I truly cannot stand the one party state and the lack of support middle of the road politics has. I have quit hanging out with a lot of people because I just don't want to hear about their politics, which I typically have nothing in common with.

Dude, seriously, a "Liberal" in Knoxville would be called a Nazi in LA, at this stage. You may have no idea and it's better that you don't perhaps, but this place is being destroyed before my eyes. We are all fleeing and honestly, could care ZERO point ZERO about someone's politics. Just want to live in freedom but wait-that is sort of...political. You don't realize how political you are until someone tries to limit your free ability to speak, move, associate, etc.

I find it funny how you list conservative as a con. I grew up in NY, lived in LA after high school and settled in Arizona. NY is a welfare pit, LA is an over rated toilet. Arizona was the only conservative place of the three. It was clean, with low taxes and little crime. It took me about 30 seconds to switch to a conservative after seeing how much better they ran things. Now droves of California liberals are moving here to escape California’s failed policies (that they voted for) while continuing to praise their liberal beliefs. Then they still vote Democrat which is causing conservative states like Arizona to start failing. All over the country liberals are fleeing Washington, California, New York, etc. and running to conservative states like Idaho, Tennessee etc. only to complain about the very people who made their state successful. If liberalism is so awesome I suggest remaining or relocating to only liberal places. They have such nice locations too like Detroit, Chicago, or your former town of Baltimore known for it’s low crime rates... oh wait.

For everybody complaining about Conservative being in the Cons, he's not saying there's anything wrong with your beliefs. He means there's so much of it that it leaves little to no room for other opinions. Go ahead and argue all about it with me. The fact of the matter is that this is the land of liberty, I don't know if y'all know what liberty really is but basically its important to respect your neighbors opinion even if you don't actually agree with them. That's the beauty of this country.

For readers who are interested in moving to the Knoxville area: Housing costs have risen sharply over the last couple of years just like they have everywhere else, but housing is still cheaper here than in most places in the north or western US. Also, there are several outlying cities around Knoxville that have full services. A big plus is the two interstates that go in all four directions, so if you live outside of the city but you have to drive in to work, it's relatively easy.
@BenBarredo

Well said, thank you. I have to explain that to someone new everyday. I still get calls from people thinking they can start a small homestead on a $150,000 budget. I'm like, add another $100,000 and you might (MIGHT) have a chance. Its crazy how fast it has grown. Still, property taxes are next to nothing, gas is still cheap compared to most places, and our average cost per house is still cheaper than most places.

About the east Tennessee weather: I spent my first 29 years around Montgomery, Alabama. Down there, the saying is, there are only two types of weather: hot and wet or cold and wet. The heat and humidity start up before Easter, and it doesn't really cool down until around Thanksgiving. By contrast, east Tennessee has four distinct seasons. It doesn't really start getting hot until mid-May, and it begins cooling off in late September. Even with that, there aren't many unbearably hot days, meaning over 90 degrees with oppressive humidity. The two mountain ranges around the Tennessee River valley protect Knoxville from the worst snowfalls, although we do get big snows every few years where it's bad enough to shut down the schools for up to a week. The springtime and autumn are beautiful. The fall foliage rivals that of New England, and the fall season that just ended was one of our prettiest and longest-lasting ever. Today, December 26, it was nearly 70 degrees and I worked outside a little. We get odd warmups like that in the winter sometimes. It's welcome, because it makes for a shorter winter. Things start blooming again around mid-March.

It is somewhat hot in the summer but it is NOTHING like summer in Atlanta, and in Florida, it is hot 10 months out of the year, and only tolerable in January and February. I would add as a con that the sale tax is a little high, 9.75% but then we have no state income tax. As for the real estate prices. . .Wow! Here you can get a nice little house with a bit of land for $250 000 but the prices are rising because of the high demand. I'm somewhat serious about moving to Knoxville. I live in Brentwood, Tn, a little south of Nashville, but hate the traffic and crime. I work in Nashville, and see a lot of crime. My wife was robbed at gunpoint in Hendersonville, TN (a little northeast of Nashville), so we now live in Brentwood, TN due to low crime. I think most things are better around Knoxville including beautiful scenery and things to do. Is there a place you would recommend arpund Knoxville to rent an apartment?

My wife and I are looking to move to the Knoxville area from Pennsylvania. This was really helpful as far as the city area, just curious as to what the job market is like for tradesmen there?
@nathangrant6735
@nathangrant6735 4 жыл бұрын
As one who is looking to relocate to this area and has recently inquired about the piping trades locally, I was told that there are a number of projects still up and going. However, many projects have not panned out as fully as expected and quite a few folks are out of work. Many projects have been cancelled because of this virus, but overall it's been a tougher market for folks down that way in recent years. That said, usually there is a bounce back for the trades following the major economic downturns like what we saw in 2008-2009. I can't really say what the right decision is for you and your family. It's a college town with a major research facility nearby, so if you can find something to get you by until the winds pick up again, you might find it meets your needs. Kinda depends on your trade and the reason you're trying to move there too. If you're going no matter what, then it kinda is what it is...but overall other parts of the country are in a better position, excluding the temporary public health issues. Just my two cents. Best of luck!
@kennethv5250

depends on your trade. plumbers, carpenters, electricians and similar trades can pretty much print money. i live in a more rural area and the trades i mentioned are so booked up that it takes a lifetime to get work done. cities will still have a need for the basic trades and getting hired shouldnt be much of a problem. having said all that, the Rona can cause issues for getting jobs, best to call around and ask about your skill area and how jobs are going right now.

Im very familiar with both cities and surrounding areas and id take Knoxville any day of the week. Nashville is a pain in the ass, traffic is bad, and is one of the most spread out cities in the US. Say you go shopping in Nash and you have a couple diff destinations you wanna go to, it might be a 30 drive between them. In knoxville you can find all the same stuff pretty much and the majority of every kind of shopping or whatever you would want to go to is situated on kingston pike and within a short drive of each other. Gallatin is a pretty nice lil place but the bad traffic of nashville affects its metro area more and more every day. Knoxville is a much easier to navigate city and its easy to stay out of the bad parts. And in knoxville, it wont take you an hour to get in or out of the city for work during rush hour. And there is nothing that notable that ive found in Nash that cant be found in knoxville, and knoxville is better for alot of things ive noticed. Also, Nashville is one of the most popular places right now in the US to move to so its turning into one of those places where everyone you meet is from somewhere else and theres alot of gimmicky, touristry shit. If you wanna live in a club/bar scene, nashville might be for you but if your older and want less stress, plenty of things to do, including nature, less driving, and all the ammenities of a bigger city, Knoxville is the place for you. Also dont listen to what you hear about crime, Knoxville is safer than Nashville, period. Especially these days. You could live for years in knoxville and never lay eyes on a bad area if you didnt want to. The only real attraction in knoxville that you may have to start goimg towards a bad neighborhood to get to is the Zoo, and its still not bad you dont have to drive that far down, but you will notice the difference. From downtown to anywherw west, your golden. Which will be where anything youd possibly be interested in will be anyway. Safe travels

Knoxville area... so many don’t want to work, they are slow and way to laid back. How do you do production like that? The factory jobs are a revolving door and turnover is astronomical! This is a place in its own that’s for sure. The job I work at is 12 hrs and people know this going in , but complain and quit! Big poor me and bad attitude experience. Thanks for the video. I moved to Knoxville in 1987 and back then, it was a horrible experience on the job front. Had a number of instances back then where people were offended by my being from out of state and applying for a job. In fact, I was cussed out once and another time had someone literally throw my application in my face while screaming hatefully at me, "You ain't from around here!" Back then, an employment agency told me I'd have a very hard time getting a job and they were right. Many times, I'd apply to some company and the people looking at my application would pass it around to others standing nearby and they'd all look at me and laugh derisively and give me contemptuous looks. It wasn't based on work experience as I'd apply to places (in some cases) where I had several years' experience doing that type of job. The discrimination was off the charts but since I wasn't a minority, the EEOC said I had no protection and there was nothing that could be done. To be honest, when I first moved here, I despised the place and the people who were all fake friendly as long as they thought you were a tourist and were spending money but all that was artificial friendliness that changed in an instant once they found out you'd moved here and so on. The attitude seemed to be that if you were a tourist, you were a benefit to them but if you moved here, you were taking a job away from a local person and "no one asked you to come here! No one asked you to move here!" I heard that statement more than a few times. It was always said in a very hateful, sneering and venomous tone. As is, I stuck it out due to family issues but it was a hard time for the first several years. Thankfully, in the intervening decades, things seem to have changed a great deal. I don't know if it's because I developed a long work history and no longer had to put entries on my work history section of an application from out of state jobs but I figure that played a large part in the "changes." It would be very interesting to hear from people who've moved to the area in recent times and sought work and didn't transfer in with some company. I wonder if the bigotry still exists to the extent it did back then?
