I love how honest you are about the cons of having a rabbit. The items you mentioned are what people don’t want to hear because of how cute rabbits are. They need to know these things right away to keep them from making a mistake of owning a rabbit, then confining their rabbit to a cage to be miserable. Thank you so much!!!

You are so right! I get so frustrated with the Facebook groups from all the people who have bunnies but HAS NO IDEA how to care for them and are always looking for vet advice on Facebook posts. I have a huge problem keeping my mouth shut on these groups. There are a couple that are full of very knowledgeable rabbit owners who are great groups to follow. But holy cow, some people should never own animals. Lol!

Yeah… my bun went into GI stasis on a Sunday night during the pandemic. Spend about a good 30 minutes trying to find an ER vet that saw rabbits and would be open, it was about 30 mins away (luckily he was fine and was the very early stasis but that hour could have cost his life). Unbelievable that most vet practices here don’t even see non dogs/cats and when they do most, don’t know what they’re doing. Uggggh🥲

My baby bunnies grew up around big dogs. The boy was laid back but made life difficult for my boyfriend. My rabbit was territorial. The girl demanded attention from me and the dogs. She would make us wake up and play with her. She would verbalize in squeaks. I guess she thought since the dogs could bark, she could make noise too. They both were good at making clanking things loudly and rattling their cages. They were free roam in the house but still had cages that were left open for them to go in and out. And the dogs watched them when they were outside in the yards. They will scream loud if they got the foot stuck somehow loudly like a person. And my one was verbal quuite often in squeaks, huffs and puffs when trying to get her point off about something. She was a teaser too. To get my attention, she would pretend to get ready to bite my computer cable. When I'd tell her no, she'd put her mounth on it and dare me to get off of the computer. If I continued to not come play, she'd make her noise for me to look at her again. She had the cable in her mouth, not chewing but looking at me saying she's going to do it. I'd get up and chase her and play. She was grown by then. She had stopped chewing cords as a baby. She knew right from wrong. She would chew up the dress I had worn out on a date with someone in particular. The same man my male rabbit had squirt peed in the face. Animals know. They were right about him. He turned out to be the worst mistake I ever made in loving and trusting. This was many years ago. These days, when I decide to get fur babies. They will know how to use those speaker push buttons. They will tell me exactly what they're thinking. I'll have so many of those, that they will be speaking in complete sentences😂. They can tell me up front what they think. Rabbits are smart too. I'm sure they could speak with those too.

Also another con is dealing with all the hair/fur you'll have on your clothes. This is a general animal thing but as someone who doesn't have pets it's good to have that knowledge prior to getting any pet.
@princesspikachu3915 Жыл бұрын
I feel like mine is easy to care for. The “high maintenance” part isn’t really that bad. The only negative thing I can think of is GI stasis and other medical issues. Even if you live near an animal hospital that deals with rabbits it can be hard to tell they are sick.

I'm glad knowledge of proper rabbit care has started to spread. It breaks my heart knowing that there are rabbits out there living out their lives in cages because an irresponsible parent bought it for their kid for Easter or something thinking it would basically be a big hamster. Bunnies are intelligent, social creatures with a lot of social and health needs. There is still progress to be made on educating people about bunnies, but we're a far cry from where we were 20 years ago

I've owned 3 Rabbits in the last 14 years, or should I say they owned me, and they were all free roaming too. It all started when a stray dumped rabbit came to my house looking for a safe home. Since then I hadn't looked back. Sadley I lost my last one Pixie really suddenly only 2 weeks ago, who I rescued from a shelter. Most expensive part is vet bills, and trying to find a vet that understands rabbits health and needs. Yes they will find things to chew on. As a truck driver, it was hard to find a bunny sitter for when I had to work away for a couple months. The pro's are as you say, they are quiet! except when an intruder or unwanted guest is walking around the house, they thump like crazy, never needed a guard dog that barked. They are loyal too, until their favourite guest shows up. Best part is they change you in a fantastic way. They show a different part of life and you start to appreciate things lot more, made me a calmer person. In due course I shall get another one. Been watching you for years now, and love your series.

I may have missed this part. but if I did apologize. but Rabbits do require annual vaccinations? do they not? I know some landlords in general prefer or require this to be done. I feel mentioning the annual vaccinations should be mentioned in part of :caring for a bun Not all people will follow that guideline but it certainly should be mentioned.
@Noel.Chmielowiec Жыл бұрын
Yes, they require regular vaccination, not because landlords would want it, but because they can't get viruses like RHDV1, 2 and myxomatosis, they are the 3 ones that you vaccine rabbits against. They are deadly, and if rabbit would catch it, there's almost no way to save their life. And you can bring those viruses on your shoes or clothes, they wouldn't do any harm to you but can kill your rabbit.

I love my Pookie. The pros outweigh the cons with him, hands (paws) down. I will never regret having him in my life. He has shown me and taught me so many things; who would have thought that such a tiny lil creature could impart such wisdom and compassion. Bunnies may not be cuddly but sometimes i just bury my face in his fur and accidentally try to breathe (my nose gets clogged with bunny fur) hehe. That to me is bliss.

Smaller dogs, rabbits and cats.

What a great video ❤ we love our rabbits and yes they are lovely pets but oh so very sensitive. After going thru stasis and other unfortunate procedures (we adopt rescues, they usually has a lot of health issues from improper care in early life), I sometimes feel like everyday and every meal I kinda hold my breath to see if they will eat. And then I can relax knowing they are both ok. And then it’s breakfast time and it’s the same thing. Probably me being too worried but it really is a con how sensitive they are and how quickly things can turn really bad. They are very sweet and gentle, quiet as you mentioned and I also think they feel safe with their owners because as soon as someone else enters our house they are gone and the second the guests leave they will jump up, back in the couch as nothing happened. Adorable animals with big personalities. With proper care and a good insurance they can live a happy life but it’s important for the owner to be responsible and deep dive in to proper care since there’s not a lot out there that is correct. Even out vets disagree on some parts and they’re both experts in bunny’s.

I recently read about an only meadow, grass, vegetable and herb diet for rabbits. I always learned that hay should be 80% of your rabbits diet but this study shows that there are multiple health risks with giving your rabbit hay as a main part of their diet. It is a german vision which is called: 'Artgerechte Haltung'. I feed my bunnies like you suggest in your videos, but I really want to learn more about this vision. Do you know more about this or would you like to do a video about this? :)

Did it specify what health risks there were and what they recommended instead? That's not in line with the majority of research

My bunny will be 6 in November and he hates travelling for almost his whole life. Even 5 minutes drive to his vet is a horror. If I stop talking to him, he starts to shake. He gets calm when he's in her office, then he gets stressed again. He's also very demanding and has to have everything his way, so we can't leave him with anyone who doesn't know him well. My mum lives an hour away and she has a dog and a cat, so she can't stay with him, and I can't bring him to her because my bun and her cat hate each other (bun is angry and kitty is scared, because the dog won't let her come near the bunny, doggie loves him to death and gets overly protective, so kitty hisses). So travelling for us is basically not possible, someone always has to stay home, even one of our friends said that it's worse than having a small child, because you can leave a child with grandparents if you need to. When I was in hospital he was so angry when I came back, how dare I leave him for a week. The same when my husband had work training in another city for a month. But on the plus side, he's very healthy bun, never had GI stasis, the only visists to the vet are for his vaccines and checkups, so twice a year. And he had ear infection once, but it resolved after week of antibiotics and probiotics. The most money I spend on his vet bills was his neutering, and it wasn't that expensive either, however I live in Poland and it was almost 5 years ago, prices went up so much since then.

Get a beard trimmer and shave her hair down in her groin area carefully or if you can’t manage to do it bring her to a vet that will. I had to shave my elderly rabbits groin area down the last month he was alive and he was short haired and I had to clean his butt up everyday with unscented baby wipes.

My current bunny & his future bun sister will be my last. Bunnies are HIGH maintenance imo. Mostly due to 1.) litterbox cleaning where u hav to dump EVERYTHING out on the reg. & 2) bunny proofing the entire house....😭😭 then 3) dealing with sore hocks bc they don't have paw pads even though u covered EVERYTHING w fleece & blankets. I’ve had a dog & 2 cats. I've had 5 bunnies & 1 bunny is far more work than the cats and dog put together. My current bunny is sweet and he's earned his novice trick title. He's outgoing and loves going w me places. But his level of maintenance..... 💀 Sure you have to walk the dog but that's nothing compared to having to bunny-proof entire house and even then ur bun having feet issues. 😩 Just my opinion ofc! Ppl will see my videos w my bunny & comment on how they want a bunny, but i feel like 99% of ppl would be better off w a cat, especially if they were to free roam their bunny like how ur supposed to. I still love my bunny & don't regret adopting him 🐰 he's honestly one of the best things to ever have happened to me. ♡ he's the light of my life.
