In recent weeks, two prominent men, Britain's King Charles and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, revealed they were dealing with prostate issues. CBS News chief medical correspondent Dr. Jon LaPook offers us a prostate "user's guide," and explains PSA tests and the process of diagnosing and treating ailments such as benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostate cancer.

First of all, sorry about your loss. It's an awful thing. The PSA- It's not a screen though. They look for a trend. Trend's going up sharply? That then gives them the indication to act. This is my understanding. One also needs it felt. Those two things don't give a certain fact of cancer though. As with the feeling of the prostate, it still may not be 'nodulely,' because it can only be felt on one side.

It’s important to note that men abstain from ejaculation 24-48 hours before their blood draw for a PSA test, otherwise risking a false high reading and a false sense of alarm! This happened to me a year ago when my PSA went from 3.9 to 5.1 (having ejaculated w/i 24 hrs of the blood draw) but down to 2.9 a couple of weeks later (after having been abstinent for 48 hours prior)

BPH is actually fairly common for men if you live past 50 or 60, and it can be a real pain. Amazing how it takes 2 prominent world figures to draw attention to it. I had it at 53. I got really sick at first, followed by a misdiagnosis. It stopped me in my tracks for a couple months and I had an operation eventually. I was healthy before it hit me. And believe I’m healthy now. I started paying closer attention to what I ate.

There is no over-treating a slow growing cancer. And you can MRI suspected prostate cancer. If it shows cancer, then biopsy to be sure and get a Gleason score. I’ve seen too many men do that “watch and wait” thing and then die a hideous death with pain that no amount of morphine could quell.

You left out Dexter King, MLK's son, who was diagnosed with prostate cancer three year before his recent death at age 62. It would be great if the media spent as much time on prostate cancer as on breast cancer. They are both pretty much equal in occurrence in their gender related occurrence for male and female patients and the fact that the genes in prostate cancer and breast cancer can be the same genes involved in each disease. No one ever discusses the potential untoward effects of the treatment for prostate cancer. As a prostate cancer patient in remission the media's lack of attention to prostate cancer pisses me off.

@@Burps___ To me, the overtesting (use) of PSA is just like a mild fever; nothing expensive; not to be over praised as it is a screening test, not a diagnostic battery. I believe it is easily repeatable (I’m referring to the collection, not the numbers). Just collect the sample. With respect to accuracy, in my personal experience, it’s documented even the slightest changes. Again, it’s a screening test; not a biopsy. It’s a tool; it shouldn’t be a hammer. It is interesting that after a radical prostatectomy or radiation, PSA is what is used to monitor; just like when on Active Surveillance. Unless one uses PMSA PET. Most men suffering from prostate issues are those with a bad diet of fast foods and processed sugar, who daily consume soda and desert sugars. Sugar causes inflammation throughout the body. Sugar also feeds cancer cells to grow strong. The best thing you can do for yourself is cut out all fast food and processed sugars from your diet and take natural supplements that decrease inflammation like Ginger, turmeric, vitamin C, green tea, and others. Prescription drugs will not help much if you do not cut out the sugar. And prescription drugs only help the symptoms and never provide the cure while harming your body in many ways.
