I disagree. Touch screens sucks. Vita has one (or even two) and I never used them and just find them to be annoying. In fact games that FORCE you to use that new gimmick are really annoying and you wish the game would not use a touch screen. I think most people prefer buttons and hate touch screens unless you are 10 years old and grew up with smart phones where you only touch a screen. I WANT BUTTONS!

I swear CryWolf it's almost like you know what I like. A friend gave me my PSP, it was my first portable console. The design is just beautiful, isn't it? It's hard to describe to someone who hasn't held it before. I can't believe they were able to put in such a good screen on a 2004 device. I also can't believe you captured from a real PSP. Do you not need a PS3 to output on TV? Just the cables? You choose some very good picks for games but I'll just throw a couple more out there: NFS Carbon Own the City - You did touch on Need for Speed but the first two PSP games were pretty rushed, Carbon OTC actually has a full-open world on the PSP. Test Drive Unlimited on PSP is also open world apparently. Motorstorm Arctic Edge: One of the most fun games on the PSP, with a cool winter festival theme and fast loading times for the PSP. It also got a PS2 port (in 2009!) Tony Hawk's Underground 2 Remix: A port of the home console versions with essentially all of the content retained, quite impressive for a launch title. The fps is halved to 30 but it's still very good. LittleBigPlanet PSP: I mean, you're almost playing a PS3 game on portable hardware with this one. You can even make your own stages still. Tbh my only problems with the PSP are some of the eccentric hardware choices, like the Memory Stick Duo, the screen being prone to ghosting in retro games (SEGA Mega Drive/Genesis Collection is pretty egregious for this.) Oh yeah, can we also talk about Game Sharing? It's like download play on the DS, it's really cool. Although only a few games like Namco Museum, Burnout Legends, and Sonic Rivals 2 used it. Great job CryWolf. I might need to fire up my PSP now. If it's not out of battery😂
@crywolfplaysАй бұрын
Thanks for sharing! It really is a beautiful system, even today but for 2004 it was crazy. I did capture this off a real PSP without a PS3 - as long as you buy that component cable from Sony shown in the video, you just need an adapter to convert the component signal to HDMI, and then you can feed that into a capture card. It's really kind of amazing. There were so many great games for this system it was difficult to try and cram a lot of them into a reasonable amount of time, but your suggestions are great ones too. I remember having a lot of fun with underground.

Another thing worth mentioning is the emulation capabilities of the PSP if you load custom firmware. Certainly for the time it was released, what it can emulate is pretty impressive. Off memory, I could run PS1 roms on my PSP, Mega Drive, Sega CD, all of the Gameboys, Beats of Rage, even arcade titles from CPS1 and 2. And it's pretty user friendly to set up also, simply hook it up to a laptop and you can drag and drop files as you like.

So the device that the movie player replaced was a technically portable but larger than a surface pad full setup was a disc movie player that my mom used to set up for us on trips. When we both got PSPs we got UMDs for movies instead so that when we were on road trips we had high quality video with headphones so I didn’t mess up her music. The psp was my favorite console I ever owned, I felt like out of anything I had besides an actual computer it just felt like I never needed a gameboy or DS, I remember I skipped having one entirely until HG//SS dropped and even then it was just HG and phantom hourglass next to a big collection of UMDs in a case like for CDs but miniature.

I’ve been in and out of the gaming collection scene for a while now, I honestly feel the psp feels better than the vita despite the lack of the second joystick. I am aware you can play psp on the vita but it just isn’t the same imo. I have a hacked psp 1000 that I use for psp and some ps1 and I honestly use it more than my switch. I am predominantly a PlayStation user but as a kid I only had gameboys so it would have been a game changer for me to have the psp when I was younger. I ended up selling my vita in the end because I prefer the PSP for psp games and as far as ps vita games I’m not too fussed on them and the majority of the ones I do care about I have the ports on my ps5 as well as better versions on my switch like personal 4 golden for example. The vita being easily replaceable by modern tech but I can’t say the same for psp, it’s still very relevant in my eyes. I’m eventually going to ips mod the screen but for now all I did was get a bigger and better ostent battery and it’s good to go

While the games often hold up really well the PSP itself isn't the best way to play most of those titles. Emulation offers upscaling, HD texture replacement, easy access to cheats and save states. If you use a controller you can even map the camera controls, if a game had them via face or shoulder buttons, to the right analogue stick. If not for the UMD movies I own my PSP would have been retired long ago. If the PPSSPP emulator ever gains that functionality my PSP gets put in a safe place for me to enjoy the memories I made with it.
@ramdomgunner97Ай бұрын
personally I'm of the opposite opinion. I love how portable the psp is, for me playing it on an emulator on my computer defeats the purpose. some turn-based rpgs maybe I can see being as good of an experience on a smartphone emulator, but any game that requires quick reflexes becomes annoying on the touch buttons of those emulators. also in general I like playing games in the consoles for which they were designed. my biggest problem is that my old psp's analog stick is getting drift problems
@voteDCАй бұрын
@@ramdomgunner97 Phones have controllers too. You can also buy retro gaming handhelds like the Retroid Pocket 3+ that are pretty much perfect for PSP games. You really aren't just limited to touch controls. The RP3+ isn't even that much larger than a PSP, 1000 at least, so you aren't even sacrificing portability. Another element for me is that my PSP isn't getting any younger and I'd rather keep it in working order for as long as possible. I've been able to transfer my saves from my PSP to PPSSPP and carry on from where I left off.

Amazing looking games, crystal clear video footage from movies, and it also had great audio capabilities. And if you jailbroke it you then had a world of emulators and psp back ups! It was an amazing handheld console. Crazy to think that many people think it flopped. It sold over 80million units plus! Hardly a flop, but it just didn't sell as well as Sony had hoped. Sony could honestly do the same again. If they can get access to the strong ARM chip on the market, polish up a form factor branching from what the Vita had, and create something that is both smaller yet still ergonomic and more powerful than what Nintendo offers, the big question though is people seem to prefer larger handhelds now, to the point where it’s no longer portable, so I’m not sure if they would go for the steam deck or portal approach, or if they’d stay true to Play Station Portable and Vita making something that fits in the pocket.

Some of the games did have long load times, especially for a handheld. Large memory cards of equivalent 2gb size or so were still pretty expensive in 2004 though I'm not sure how that would have played out. With that being said since PlayStation pretty much abandoned the Vita. I kind of just gave up on Sony entirely. I am now a PC gamer. Not to mention what Sony has become I don't like their business practices but whatever. In fact Sony come out and said they're working on a new handheld but the only reason they're doing this is because they think it's going to make them a crap load of money. Cuz all they care about is the money not the player. What's okay we have a steam deck and legion go. X player is expensive but works really well. It was fun Sony but I moved on it's what I'm basically saying.

You missed something important in the "Switch in 2005" section: while PSP games have black borders around them, emulated PS1 games do not. You can use a PSP to play PS1 games on a TV and then unplug it and play on the go. I don't think there's a single device out that supports this with analog video out which matters a lot if you want to play PS1 games on a CRT. It's a niche use case, but the PSP is literally the best device for this. Video playback on TV is fullscreen as well, but I got less mileage out of the PSP's video capabilities.

@crywolfplays you're welcome:) there's a lot of niche use cases for video out. Another example: the PSP Go supports Bluetooth controllers. You can use it with video out and a controller at home and then take it on the go. 1000, 2000, 3000 and Go all function slightly differently with video out, with some models offering more capabilities on a TV than others.

No mention of POPS - POrtable PlayStation - PS1 emulator added with firmware 3.00 two years after the PSP release.

I bought a jailbroken PS3 that can play a lot of different consoles. I have a pretty huge library of games on it. Cost me about 100 bucks maybe 5 ish years ago

Not to be that guy, but.... the original version of the XMB that the PSP and PS3 use "technically" debuted first on the PSX in 2003, well before the PSP release. Right around the release of the PSP a few Sony Tv's and even the cybershot camera also used the same XMB. The Sony Bravia PX300 (PS2 TV) although it released much later (2010) it also used the same cross media bar.

To be fair Nintendo DS launched with TWO 3-inch screens. So the ultimate screen size is 6 inches, much larger than PSP

iPod Video 5th gen and 5.5 also had the same Wolfson Brand Audio DAC as the PSP 1000 but PSP had a better video experience than the iPod Video. All my favorite PSP OST’s are on my iPod for better battery life, but very nice watching my movies on PSP (compared to iPod Video)

Sony needs to revisit handhelds. This time focus on support, instead of power. We don't need a portable ps4, we need games. And stop with the proprietary crap. Just use what is already available.

I never liked the playstation but GOD I LOVE THE PSP and I will never understand why it was not more popular and why the DS "won". To this day I find no fun games on the DS. The PSP is so underrated that it makes me question humanity in general like you can have such an amazing product yet people do not care and it is sad.
@crywolfplaysАй бұрын
Yeah the PSP was incredible, I think people are so desensitized to modern tech that they either forget or aren't old enough to realize how crazy this was back in the day. And even back then I felt like people "didn't get it".
@jeffhauser8031Ай бұрын
@@crywolfplays back in the day people clearly did not get it. i hear about the amazing DS library. the PSP has an amazing library. ds is mostly kiddy games and while i am not ashamed to enjoy kiddy games i do not like the games on the ds while the psp has games in all genres for literally everyone. it is amazing.

I actually spent a lot more time with my DS than my psp because Nintendo games are my favorite, but the PSP was always just mind blowing to me in terms of tech and had some great games

For a time it was brilliant. But when using it now you sadly realize that most hyped games is just mediocre. Like boring Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII or Resistance: Retribution. And that big screen is very blurry in motion so games with crisp pixelart almost painful to play. At least - on my PSP2000. GOWs is great, btw. And for 50$ tops for used PSP now - it definitely worth it.
