Ive been through a lot of trauma (not a spouse death though) and hyperfocusing on a single thing that you can control isnt uncommon. When someone goes through trauma the biggest feeling they have can be lack of control, and the idea of having something that they can be comforting

I think that sums up Danny Tanner very well, and it's a shame imo that the show never went to that layers of his life.

I remember in an episode of Full House where Danny took Stephanie to a therapist to deal with her PTSD. While Stephanie was drawing a picture for her the therapist started to question Danny as to why he was dusting her coffee table during their conversation! Unfortunately Stephanie got done with her drawing before Danny could answer.

It was established that Danny's parents were divorced when he was a kid. And he had to fill in as man of the house. His mother Claire was also a clean freak as she encouraged her son to keep clean. And due to his responsibilities, he wished to not only keep the house in line, but to also make his mother proud.

I don't remember how I was first introduced to Full House. I probably just found it whilst watching all the "TGIF" shows. As for Danny being so clean, as an adult I thought maybe they wrote him that way as a joke because in real life Bob Saget's humor was so dirty and raunchy. I like your theory better though. :D I love that you're doing videos on classic sitcoms, I can't wait to see more. :)

Dark theory, fun. Well thought out too! Yet actually, I think the show dose explain the cleaning, and much more simple: Grandmas. In a flashback/early episode the house WAS a mess, as none of the grown -a$& men were used to cleaning, and were adjusting to the new living arrangements. So of course sitcom shenanigans occur and Danny’s mother makes a surprise visit, quickly decides (and rightfully so for the time) that she can’t have her grandchildren living like that and decides to move in. When Joey and Jessie try to back Danny up, she calls in THEIR mothers! So faced with having their lives and home controlled by their mothers again, The boys go into super cleaning mode, until the mothers are satisfied and agree to leave, with the “threat” of pop back in to check in on them occasionally. Danny, with that in mind, never leaves super clean mode. He wants his independence from mom, pulse it IS healthier for all involved, even if it drives everyone crazy sometimes!

I met Full House when I was 12 or 13 years old. Here in Brazil, on a broadcaster called SBT there is a children's TV program called Bom Dia e Companhia (something like "Good Morning Inc." in the translation), which alternates between segments of play with the presenters and cartoons or comedy series. Full House was one of the series shown from 2013 to 2014 (this broadcaster is well known for playing older series). I remember coming home from school and, right after lunch, running in front of the TV to watch. Plus: I found your channel recently and I'm in love with your videos. I also write theories and do analysis of films, series and cartoons and you are being one of my great inspirations. Thank you for making videos so complete and well explained.

U know as a young woman who's dealt & still facing childhood trauma (went thru the Foster system & being separated from my parents when I was 7 & all the 12 Foster families I had to go thru) going thru trauma & facing it as an adult, trying to "control & micromanage" is my (& many others who's dealt w/trauma) of having a sense of control. U aren't too far off, in all honesty u r correct. When someone goed thru something anything that's physically & emotionally traumatizing u lose that sense of control u thought u had & will do anything to gain it back. & as a now 22 year old, I'm re-watching the Full House show w/new eyes, & relate to Danny & his need for control over some part of his life. It's not uncommon. But what I'm glad about now is that the mental health topic is now a more open subject instead of being swept under the rug. I don't like how in the 80s & 90s that all mental trauma & issues were seen as a bad thing. It's kinda twisted when u look at it

The house is complete wreck & none of the guys want to take responsibility or clean the house so they call there moms to come & clean for them but when they refuse the boys buckle down & finally clean up the house. It’s like a completely different Danny than the rest of the series. The episode is 1x04 “The Return Of Grandma”

i’m glad you didn’t just say he had OCD 😅. i have ocd and while i don’t have cleaning as a compulsion and i only know my experiences, it seems to me that the people who do have cleaning as a compulsion don’t just enjoy cleaning, it’s something they feel they _have_ to do. ocd is an anxiety disorder and the thing that separates them from other anxiety disorders are compulsions that cause distress and disrupt functioning. i think the reason people get confused is because one of the most common types of ocd is probably contamination or health concern. using your examples: someone might label their mugs and have a very specific place for each one as to not spread germs because they have a fear of COVID for example and washing them isn’t enough. someone might check the floor multiple times for pieces of broken glass because they want to avoid someone falling and getting glass in their eye. they might freak out over a mess and inspect it because they don’t want to lost something (hoarding is actually a form of ocd). again i don’t have these compulsions there is no specific compulsion that is required to have ocd, it’s really about the motivation and how it affects you. did you do a theory on monica from friends as well? a lot of people say she has ocd or ocpd cause she “enjoys it” but i think it could be linked to her love of food. like how some people use food as a substitute for emotional connection and monica’s parents were not the best lol like they very clearly favored ross in front of her!

I remember watching it along with shows like Sabrina, it was a show I could "safely" watch growing up. I like your theory but I also wonder if Danny's wife was the one to do most of the cleaning before she died. As a result, he had to take over that and the cooking and stuff, and discovered how he could "control" things that way.

well aside from Dannys cleaning habits, I got into Full House at 7 years old. Back when a channel called Abc Family would air reruns mostly 90s shows like Family matters and Step by Step in the early 2000s. I came across this show because the Olsen twin girls were so popular during that time and I looked up to them. Just wanted to see their acting careers at such a young age. Ever since I got hooked watching it every afternoon during summer breaks. It was such a heartwarming show and I could kinda relate to some of the episodes as well. I even got the first season on dvd. Rest In Peace Bob Saget. The whole cast was really a real family to all of us. 🌉🏡

What you described as OCD is very specific and not at all true of most cases. Also, OCD is not normally emotional and is very much a mindset, typically revolving around control. In trying to describe Danny as not OCD, you actually made the perfect case for it. LOTS of people do their compulsive acts precisely to keep their loved ones from dying.

I got into Full House because *I'm old*. So old, I knew Dave Coulier from a show he did on Nickelodeon called Our of Control. (He still did the "Cut, it, out" bit on that show too.) I do think that it's worth pointing out that in the early first season, Danny wasn't a neat freak. There are episodes with him being a complete slob! Just something the writers worked in later, not caring too much about past continuity. But as the show went on, the writers did figure out they had to let their formula adapt as it progressed. Let's be honest. The premise of the show was trying to one up the hit movie, Three Men and a Baby. Three guys raising three girls and they don't have a clue what they're doing! By season 2 they figured out they could only take that "clueless" idea for so long. And they let it grow past that. I think part of that was making Danny the captain of clean, because he couldn't just be a dude trying to figure out little girls any more. Lastly, yes therapy was big in the 80s and 90s, especially in California, like San Francisco. No one would have batted an eyelash at Danny seeing a counselor after the death of his wife. I remember some shows at the time joking about how, "my therapist has a therapist." Or "my dog has his own shrink.". Or "my marriage is so rough, my wife and I see separate psychologists.". Heck another show from about that time was Growing Pains, where the father was a psychiatrist. I think the TV show Danny worked for would probably provide counseling, and if they thought his job performance was slipping, they might even insist on it. Unrelated side note, did you ever watch that VelociPastor movie you mentioned on Twitter?

I haven't seen it all so I don't know if this is what you say, but maybe Pam died for unknown causes -I forgot if there is any proof of how she died- and he wants all his girls to be safe and not die, he might think pam died from cleanliness of the house.

They do say in one of the later seasons that Pam was killed by a drunk driver. So, she wasn’t sick and didn’t do anything wrong, she was just a sad statistic. :(

I am in middle school and Full house was so hilarious. The ending was kind of off and sad but ended with our favorite family, giving out one of their famous group hugs. You really don't need to be so extravagant towards Danny. Also it is 24 times that he makes the girls chew their food. He probably is overprotective and wants them to chew their food correctly and not choke. So... He got his desire for everything being clean from his mother!! It basically says so!! You don't need to be so RUDE ESPECIALLY ABOUT WHEN IT COMES TO VICKI!!!! I came by Full House when I was searching for something to watch. Though of course I saw Fuller House first.

Dissecting a fictional character isn’t being rude, it’s being analytical. If you don’t understand the difference, KZbin probably isn’t a place you should frequent.

It was always on reruns. I loved the girls and joey but every other adult weirded me out. Jessy was a jerk who was obsessed with himself. Which in turn would make him freak about the smallest stuff. And the girls were always sorry but sometimes scared of his reactions. And the dad was over bearing. I had a mom very much like Danny and his control issues and it made me sad the girls had to live like that too. To me joey was the one who was kind and willing to just be there. As a kid he was more of what I though a parent was supposed to be. But the show just tried to make him out to be the guy who couldn't grow up. A pathetic peter pan if you will. It was those points where I had to stop watching. For a show famous for being family friendly, I saw a lot of unhealthy tropes and treatment.

I never heard of Fuller House. I watched Full House a bit as a child with some neighbor girls. They LOVED the show. I never liked the characters for some reason. At that age I was very into watching reruns of black and white shows such as Leave It To Beaver and The Addams Family.

I have a theory why Danny was nervous about DJ learning to drive because his wife died from the drunk driver while driving the car so he is worried that the same thing will happen to DJ
@melissacooper4282
@melissacooper4282 3 жыл бұрын
That makes a lot of sense. There was one scene where he was tense watching a movie with a car chase in it or something. Then he flipped out when DJ told him that she got into an accident while learning to drive from Jesse! She just scrathed up Jesse's mustang by misjuging a turn.

yeah. idk what ur ocd is like i only know what mine is like. i don’t really have cleaning as a compulsion so i don’t really know but it seems to me danny is just a neat-freak because it seems to me that most people with ocd that clean compulsively do that because they have a terrible fear of losing something or something becoming contaminated, i don’t know though. but also keep in mind danny genuinely enjoys cleaning. he said himself spring cleaning day is his christmas. if he was a real person with ocd, he would not necessarily enjoy it it would more or less be something he _has_ to do i think. but again i only know my experiences.

Emilee Nedz it's different for everyone. After watching this video I no longer think he has OCD. I didn't really take into consideration that he enjoyed cleaning. Compulsions aren't pleasant. I don't have cleaning compulsions, but I do have some people in my life with OCD who do. OCD is classified as an anxiety disorder, but I think his stress was due to being a single father rather than having OCD. Thanks for your perspective!😁 It's nice to hear what others have to say

Actually this is pretty true. The first episode the moms come in because the place was a mess. They made comments about how he cleaned when he was younger but he stopped more with Pam.Jesse made jokes about Danny getting counseling which he never does. Danny also gets really controlling when DJ learns to drive. So yeah, it was definitely Pam. If he got counseling and dealt with it and actually let someone close again he probably get passed it.

Oh I remember that episode! But it really took a serious topic and brushed it under the rug. Foster care often led to heavy medications and huge amounts of trauma in the 90s (even now, if I'm being honest). The Tanners didn't do the wrong thing, but it's not like they swooped in and made his life better either, and they didn't show any of this from the abused child's side.
