The DARK Implications of the FULL HOUSE Series Finale [That solves a plot hole from Fuller House]

FULL HOUSE was a family-oriented sitcom that ran from 1987 to 1995. It pretty much exists permanently in the collective subconscious of anyone who was a child in the 90s. But despite this lingering cultural status, Full House was actually canceled in 1995. Suddenly. Which means the planned season 8 finale now became the SERIES finale.
And as a series finale, it’s surprisingly dark.
The finale is a two-parter entitled “Michelle Rides Again” in which Michelle has an accident and suffers amnesia. The implications of this finale have potential echoes in the recent Netflix revival series FULLER HOUSE.
Yes, I’m over-analyzing 90s nostalgia again.
But I love to examine both the first episodes and the finales of TV shows. How did things start compared to how they ended? Was the finale planned? Was the show canceled? Did they have an ending in mind or did the show have to be hastily rewritten to try and wrap things up? (Someday, I want to ramble about the Supernatural finale, but this is not that day.)
Upcoming Videos:
-A kinda follow-up to a previous video about a failed pilot - and a video people THINK was a failed pilot but actually wasn’t.
I have a lot of scripts written. Another Hallmark movie. Another one of my weird and random internet things. A bad movie from the Twilight era. The classic science fantasy series that should get a high-budget TV series instead of a Game of Thrones prequel. A very odd reality series from the early 2000s. (And there are all the “in-progress” scripts, which are many. Too many.) But I don’t know what I’ll feel like filming next.

I hated how many times the cast tried to guilt trip the Olsens into returning to the show on Fuller House. The girls were around 8 or 9 when it ended. As significant a time as it would've been for the main cast, they probably, realistically don't remember much about filming it anymore and, therefore, don't feel as strongly or sentimentally about those years. Besides, they hadn't acted in over ten years by that point. They can't base their lives around other people's nostalgia.

I didn't exactly like the guilt trip in the pilot episode of Fuller House. Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen have their own lives, and to be fair, didn't have to tap the nostalgia market to revive sour careers into irrelevancy like the rest of the cast did. I am glad that the rest of the surviving cast repaired their relationship with Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen at Bob Saget's funeral, but I really respected the Olsens for respecting their own comfort and not going along with it.

@@patriciaalvareztostado8170 While I don't know about the drama much behind the scenes but feels like is a fair enough reason, I keep thinking of the gilmore girls revival. They got basically every major cast member back for at least a cameo and like melissa mccarthy is huge now and obviously busy and Danny Strong is a big name writer now and also busy (and I'd say didn't even have a major role in the show) but both came back, however briefly (Danny Strong for an appropriate amount of time for his role. Mccarthy not really enough considering her role but fair considering her fame now). Feel like the cast there got along quite well so thats a bit more understandable. But they can do whatever they like. I really don't care about fuller house. I saw the scene where Uncle Jesse does his first cameo and that's it. Technically it's possible to have episodic memory amnesia (names, places, events) but retain procedural memory (talk, walk, etc) cuz the latter is borderline subconscious and link to other process like muscle memory while the former is mostly in the brain. A common example of that is people that black out because of alcohols or drugs but were still able to walk or talk (to some extend) during the time they did not form new episodic memories.

It's not easy when your parent has memory problems. My mom was still mostly with it, but details were getting a bit muddled and it was hard to recall when something happened. It would get worse in a situation that she found stressful, like being at the doctor's or in the hospital. I was going to all of her appointments with her, but it's not like I could just talk to her doctor alone, so it was kind of frustrating for me because I couldn't really explain to her doctor how concerned I was without my mom hearing and getting worried about what was going on with her own mind and also worried about me. When she had to spend the night in the ER I was able to talk to one of the nurses in the hallway and explain that she had memory problems, but when I came back the next day it seemed like that info didn't get passed on to the other nurses. They had a bunch of questions about her medications and health history that she couldn't give them straight answers about. They knew what she had been prescribed, but when they tried to confirm that the list was correct and the dosages and how often and what time of day she took everything, she would say something like "Oh, I stopped taking medication X a couple weeks ago because it was bothering me." And when I came in the nurse was really concerned because medication X was really, really important for her to take every day. So I had to sit there with my mom and tell the nurse that I fill her pill organizer with all of her prescribed meds and every day I check it to make sure she has taken her meds for the day or make her take them if she hasn't and I didn't give her the option to stop taking any of medications, so she had definitely been taking everything. I didn't want to have to answer for my mom, but that was when I realized how bad things were getting when she couldn't give the nurse accurate and complete information even about her health history or saying she stopped taking a medication when she knew I was keeping her on track. I used to think dementia was something where your memory of your past just faded out after some point and anything after that point was gone, but it's more like a kaleidoscope with a lot of little pieces that shift around as you move and change what you see. Nothing is stable and the whole picture can get jumbled around and become unrecognizable and memory loss is like the little pieces are falling out just a little bit at a time, but you can't catch them because they keep slipping through your fingers and the kaleidoscope won't stop turning.

Danny already had OCD in the show. By the time Uncle Jesse, Aunt Becky and the twins got their own place, Uncle Joey moved out, D.J. went to veterinary school, Stephine did whatever she did, it was just Michelle and Danny. Jesse, Becky and Joey probably helped Danny keep his OCD in check. Michelle was just a child and it probably got worse as everyone moved out and he got older. To the point of him probably needing medication but therapy but he refused them. People with uncontrolled OCD can get abusive. When D.J. called from vet school to see how everyone was doing, and Michelle tried to tell her how Danny screamed at her for refusing to throw things away or forgetting to wash her hands once in a while, D.J. was probably like, "Poor Michelle. That riding accident always made her funny in the head."

Steve recreated their prom night and mentioned it saying "I don't know how that connects to our prom but I feel like I had to mention it for some reason." Donna Jo brings it up saying she almost didn't go to prom because her little sister had amnesia. Stephanie also mentions how her little sister had amnesia randomly, to a complete stranger, with no context which confuses them only to be followed up with "Oh don't worry, she's fine now." Kimmy also brings up "that one time your little sister had amnesia" It was basically used as a running joke through out the entire episode as different characters kept bringing it up.

The reason for the town having to be destroyed is that as part of the contract with the owner of the land they were using to film the show all of the land had to be cleared once they stopped using/renting it. Everything was going to have to be destroyed for removal anyway so Michael Landon and the producers thought it would be a great idea to use it as part of the series finale . This means no one actually owns their land and everyone is being forced to either leave or rent what they actually worked to build up from the scum that stole it from them. At the final town meeting thanks to a furious Laura they get a sudden realization that while he may own the land THEY own what's on it which has the town quickly form a defiant plan to dynamite almost every building in town. One particular instance Saget shared was the time he pretended to perform sexual acts on a doll meant to be a stand-in for his character's daughter, Michelle. Saget noted that the four-foot rubber doll even looked like a child to resemble her. As Saget recalled, when the child actors were off-set between takes and there were only adults around, he performed sexual acts on the doll, which he said made everyone in the room burst into laughter. However, what he didn't know at the time was that the child actors who were in their classroom off-set had a monitor inside where they could see everything happening on set - which prompted one of the production crew to come down to the set and ask Saget to stop."

I have to agree it was an odd part of Fuller House that Michelle wasn't there for big moments to support her apparently close knit, loving family . They mentioned phone calls but there never seemed any real close contact with her. It would make more sense that having a big high pressure career in a tough city like NYC that Michelle would be even more inclined to cling to her loving family as her safe place. The head injury angle would have nicely explained her remoteness from the family and why her career is more important to her now. They indeed could have lamented early on how she never was quite the same after that. She got her memories back but had lost her bond with the family. They could have explained that to their great sadness that she just gradually grew more away from them as time went on. They also could have made it a point that it was something they all just had to learn to accept as they can't force her to be close to them. As for the order of the episodes, it isn't as if they did the finale, then went back as you're describing. Back in the 90's (technically it happens still today and in different eras as well) it was common, especially for kids shows to either film, or create episodes out of order then air in order, or if they do follow the same order of filming and airing, occasionally the higher ups will switch the order of airing of certain episodes for multiple reasons. One common thing that happened around 9/11 for example was a lot of episodes and films being switched to different dates, storylines slightly changed, or cancelled due to having subject matters that strangely mirrored the situation, or they thought was too dark for a country that was mourning at the time.

This stuff still happens all the time. I remember there was a show airing on Disney channel called Shake it up that some people may remember as launching Zendaya's career and the second season premiere was heavily advertised and then very suddenly a different episode played because of the fact that about two days before there was an air show accident and the second season was the two leads at an air show dancing on top of a moving plane. There's also the fact that filming the finale last means that you have to edit it last. If you want to make any changes to it or reshoot anything you'll know that you want to do so before filming actually wraps. So series finales are sometimes filmed in the middle of a show, but are usually the penultimate episode filmed. The TV show M*A*S*H which aired from 1972-1983 and still has the record for largest single viewed TV program when adjusted for population, and only lost longer single viewership without adjusting for population rather recently, filmed it's finale episode second to last because they had a few weeks off to process all of the film from the film episode two weeks for reshoots and then filmed the second to last episode of the series.

Why would anyone think it’s appropriate to manipulate, bully, cajole, force, or even ask more than once for former child stars to return to a show where they likely had some very difficult and challenging experiences? The Olsen twins were worked hard from a young age, told what to do, and didn’t have much of a choice whether to act or not. In fact one of them said recently that although they appreciate the opportunities that acting gave them, she “wouldn’t wish her childhood on anyone.” They were basically forced into that lifestyle. If they didn’t want to return for the reboot GOOD FOR THEM! And good for them for standing their ground on it even when fans were whining and their costars and producers were likely putting a lot of pressure on them to show up.
@compassrose1466

It’s the same with Sam from ICarly. Jenna was treated like complete garbage by Nick and her not coming back got the excuse “oh she’s in jail” in the reboot basically. They act like Sam never existed and it’s sad af. If someone doesn’t return to a reunion or even leaves they’re punished instead of farewelled and loved for what they did due even with a new lens of context on the events that took place behind the scenes. It’s heartbreaking to know child actors are pawns in the industry. The second they’re not giving the companies money, they’re dropped and shamed..

However, nobody knew for sure that season 8 was the end until just after they had filmed their last episode of the season (the final episode they filmed aired third to last, right before the 2-episode series finale). While I never really questioned it as a kid, as an adult it didn’t make sense that Joey continued to live in the house after Jesse decided to stay. Because Joey continued to live in the basement bedroom, Jesse effectively kicked Stephanie out of her room (classic middle child’s thoughts/rights ignored) . When she asked why he couldn’t take Michelle’s room she is told, because Michelle is a baby who apparently needs her own room (I don’t think she asked why he couldn’t take DJ’s). It made sense at least that Jesse would move in to help because he provided the link, and the memories, to the girls’ mom from the period before Danny came on the scene. He could tell the, how their mom was at their age (though I think he was a yr or two younger than their mom). I could have seen Joey being like Kimmy , just always there only leaving to go home and sleep and shower. It just would have made more sense.

Say what you want about Full House, the show despite my feelings towards some of the actors has always remained in a special place in my heart. Sure it's cheesy but that was the whole point. I think you have to know what you're getting yourself into before watching it at least to a certain point. Like if you're looking for a show like Friends or Roseanne then this probably won't be the show for you. For me personally while I like those shows as well, I also enjoy a nice wholesome cheesy family friendly show. It also wasn't all cheesy and wholesome. It had its share of darker elements and adult humor. That being said, I heard the show wasn't planned on ending before they shot the final few episodes. I know Andrea Barber who plays Kimmy has said this because when she announced Fuller House ending, she was glad that they knew ahead of time so they can give a proper finale (even though I wasn't a big fan of how it ended) where in Full House they didn't know until after shooting the final episodes.

So funny thing…my Catholic all-girls high school DID require that you have a date to attend dances, including prom, because they were all “date dances.” It kind of sucked.

The public school I went to also did it not just Catholic schools doing that. Those they changed it three years after I graduated because people complained about it.

I'll admit I was a little sad that the character Michelle didn't make an appearance in the reboot because she was my favorite character, considering the Olsen twins were/are close to my age (I think they're a year older than me). But I dont blame them or any other child star who had a rough time being child actors for not coming back to the acting gig cause while if you acted in a movie or tv series or a play that does good, it can earn you money, a lot of child actors only get into acting because thier parents force them to and they practically get used and abused (not all child actors get abused but they still have a rough time). And if they manage to make it to adulthood, the moment they start starring in more adult/mature roles, or start drinking or smoking, they get crap for no longer being a child's role model. And it's like, child stars are expected to remain as kids forever when they can't because we all grow up sometime. It's no wonder Mara Wilson, Macaulay Culkin, Jeannette McCurdy, Amanda Bynes, the Olsen Twins, and Brittney Spears took a step away from the spot light. It's because they all had it rough whether they were actors, musicians or artists.

I honestly think it wasn’t fair when they were try to call out the Olsens bc the reason they quit acting was bc they just wanted a normal life and acting was stopping that from happening.

One of the things that drives me nuts about Fuller House is that at the end of Full House, Michelle gets a serious injury due to Danny's Pride (a fact they acknowledge) And yet, DJ nearly makes the same mistake twice. Once when Max has a school presentation and once when Jackson has an important football game

Where did the second attic come from? Because Aunt Becky and Uncle Jesse lived in the renovated attic, and later Stephanie did in Fuller House

LOL, I had a goodbye party at work once. Got fired my fourth day at my new company for calling out the boss' toxicity to my manager, went back to the old job, and what you said around the three-minute mark could not be any more accurate. I was persona non grata only a week after they all showered me with love and affection.
