the entire video hilariously focused on one failed self contradicting argument, blaming the individual for depending on a dominant other or the opinions of other people for one's own self worth, but then blaming individual's for not allowing others to determine their self worth and setting their self worth based on personal goals. the entire argument in the video collapses in on itself. The video avoided the existence of situational depression, where the environment/society/poor working conditions is responsible for provoking mental pain, because it's a fact of life that the human species consists of 7 billion+ individuals who all want different things. Attempting to argue that no one's mental pain should ever escalate to the extremes of severe depression, is a pathetic and mediocre denial of reality and the fact that some people WILL suffer more than others for a *very complex and infinite variety of reasons and factors which vary from individual to individual* the video avoided the fact that people can be responsible for causing the extreme psychological pain of others. the video laughably takes the arrogant and pathetic subtitle of "how to ruin your life" while avoiding the fact that people can directly cause the suffering of other people and ruin other people's lives, pain is a natural result of the reality that most people live in constant conflict in a society of constant political/economic/social/or even violent, disputes. the entire video hilariously tried to spin this failed and pathetic idea that depression/severe mental pain is the individual's fault for not letting other people determine the person's self worth but simultaneously blaming the individual if the individual is independent and makes their own basis for self worth, while avoiding the basic psychological fact that much of depression comes from the simple fact that life is NOT a pleasant or tolerable experience for everyone, some people do not have the luxury of only having temporary suffering followed by good luck and relief, many people live in constant extreme stressful circumstances which WILL push the person over the edge at some point. it's a psychological fact that every single person has a different breaking point, and it's a fact of reality that we do not live in a perfect world, the video failed to touch on the fact that it is a inevitability that some people will suffer extreme mental pain while others will by random chance be lucky enough to suffer only temporarily.

The source of my depression is a lack of discipline. I have great potential, awesome ideas and above par intellectual capacity. But I simply cannot bring myself to consistently act on that potential. I sit in an open prison of my own creation.

I relate with those feelings. Sometimes what helps me is to try to learn something new or try to find a new art to channel your creativity. Smoking weed helps as well, some say it is a form of escape but people say lots of dumb things. Hope you get through the depression as I have been through this many times.

Me I screwed myself over 6 years 🥲🥲🥲🥲😔😔😔😔I could have been an amazing drummer, amazing basketball player a Healthy teen but I one handedly ruined my life thinking too hard about my porn addiction, projecting and overthinking I was always stuck in a cycle. It’s affected me and my mom 🥲🥲🥲🥲😢😢😢😢

I believe the 'Caesar or nothing' mentality can be inspired by vengefulness as well as the desire to prove one's self-worth to oneself. Someone who has been rejected may desire to rise to such a stature that they cast a shadow over all those who they feel wronged them. Success as revenge.

I had the same feelings and still do sometimes.. but something that helped me was asking myself (and then discussing with a therapist) "why do i feel this way?" it brought me some peace knowing that certain events in my past make me think that "I need to be SOMEONE". And the point of this video was to realize that this doesn't define your self worth. Anyway I dunno man good luck

I think one of the best ways if not the best to feel better is to help others and accept help from them. Just being nice and meaning it makes your feeling of self worth go up alot, but do not try to force yourself to it. If you dont feel like it maybe be a bit nicer than you feel like. If you are in such a depressed state it is really good to accept advice and help of others, even though you might feel unworthy or think there is a better way. Try to just go with it

Step 1. Stop feeling sorry for yourself. Step 2. Keep a journal. Write down thoughts, self study , and write down personal psychological insights. (Undertstand yourself and how you operate.) Step 3. Look after yourself. Exercise eat properly, shower daily, keep yourself looking clean. Step 4. Practice balancing chaos and order. (Clean up where you can. Introduce some plants into your life and keep them alive.) Step 5. Find an aim and stick to it. Step 6. Once you have mastered the other 4 steps, then you can look for a partner because you can manage the responsibility of caring for another. ( You cannot love another if you hold contempment for yourself.) Step 7. Compare yourself to what you were by reffering to your thoughts in your journal. See how far you have come or fallen, either way you will have a physical record of your OWN history. Step 8. Embody your philisophy and act it out into the world, and carefully watch how people respond to you. Step 9. Remain humble. Do not expect exterior praise for your accomplishments. Step 10. Die in peace. Depression is usually caused by exterior factors ( unless the problem is infact neurological ) therefore by tweaking and changing exterior factors within your own personal life you hold the key to your own cure. A great example. Whatever is making you feel like a failure address it and conquer it. Depression is a state of mind. It speaks, acts and manipulates physical reality to suit its perception ( If you hold a deep resentment for life then your actions, philosophy and environment will begin to reflect that.) That being said look around at things that exist within physical reality and decide whether what is being represented truely reflects who you are as an individual. We are often caught up in someone elses idea of perfect existence and refuse to live out our own indvidual experience. Depression is tricky. There are many factors that can cause it to rise and fester, and it infects everything around it. Imagine yourself as a conduit for personalities to speak through, and everything you touch or come into contact with is deeply affected as a result of your interaction. Soon you will find yourself taking a more patient, tempered approach to life, and more importantly, to yourself.

I've come into a time in my life where I'm trying to accept the fact that mere existence is OKAY. I don't need the approval of my life style from others and society at large. And I don't need some grandiose potential self to keep me going. I just want to take things a day at a time and be okay knowing that I don't need to live up to some imaginary standard. I can just be. And what happens happens. No judgement, just do what I want to do, when I want to do it, upholding my own ideals. I've had a lot of programming from my teens and early 20s that told me my existence was a burden. That my wants and needs were selfish. And that my individuality was an error that needed correcting, not nourishment. I want to be done with that. But it's hard not to revert. So, thanks for putting out this video. It was a good reminder

Childhood trauma is a major factor setting people up for depression. Shitty parenting in particular distorts development of sense of the self, leading to part of the self (child and parent introjects) not working together. This is a key factor behind depression in many cases, because life feels hopeless when trauma is not dealt with and the 'conflicts' it creates between parts of the personality. Unfortunately for people trying to resolve these traumas, Western society praises and supports various forms of dissociation from trauma (sex, status, money, codependent romances, starting families). People who call-out child abuse in all its forms (e.g. emotional neglect, shaming) are thought of as weird as it threatens to confront them with realising what harm they perhaps have done to others, or had done to them. I've found work on childhood trauma by Alice Miller and Daniella Sieff amongst others made a lot of sense of the depression and dysfunction in my own life and some others people I've known and observed.

@Christopher Hall I think that using personality tests for categorizing people and oneself is risky and a barely working approach - at least for me. The results are highly dependent on the current mood one has while taking a test and the human tendency for self delusion further corrupts the results. Further more more the structures and categories of those tests are made by other humans and therefore strongly influenced by their view on the world. I don't want to say they never work or never helped people, but that was never the case for me or people I know personally.

I agree. I think people dismiss how traumatizing divorce can be (not just what led to the divorce - ie abuse, negligence) to a child. Having to split your love and attention between two separated parents, the potential of feeling replaced and betrayed when a parent moves on, remarries, and has children. The constant nagging that it could be all your fault, and always feeling second best. Intrusive thoughts like those can persist even when parents try their best to relieve them.

Christopher Hall As the commenter R-type mentioned, I think that in a way we all fall under each and every category. Some more some less. Categorizing yourself and boxing yourself in is not very useful I feel. Reading about personality types is very cool - I’ve myself read a book on Carl Jung’s 4 male archetypes, but it’s like a self-pleasuring prophecy or something.

@Violet Violet, do you have a therapist? If you think you have motivational issues, I would strongly encourage getting tested for ADHD. I and many others thought they had depression but it was all being caused by ADHD.

This is why psychology is so fascinating to me, I know there are people out there who need a helping hand once in a while, specially when it comes to personal issues. I want to help those people in a professional loving way, I have my own experiences that have driven me towards this path. I never want someone to go through what I’ve gone through, but if they have, then I want to be the person who helps rather than destroys.

I feel like I’m standing alone in a dark place screaming at the top of my lungs and nobody hears me...I’m married and lonely...I have fought my whole life and feel like a failure....I have worked hard only to be broke...because I am unsuccessful I am losing my family...I refuse to give up but I am loosing everything I love and I am trying to find the hope I need to to keep fighting....I am lost and I don’t know how to find my way back.

Depression drove me to try lsd for the first time, making me spiral deeper and deeper into losing any worth I had left.But it made me realize how alone I was and how I am is my choice despite anyone else.

Worth is very subjective, not just by individual but within each individual, your own feeling of self worth yesterday may be completely different to today and tomorrow, depending on how you assign worth, what measurements you use, what choices you make in every moment, and how you frame and or reframe things.

Agreed. Lsd cured my depression a few weeks back it was a depression of 6 years long and now I feel like a reborn human. Reborn psychologically like carl Jung speaks of. Post ego death revealed to me how my mind was twisting the way people spoke and turning it against myself when in reality my friends were not of that nature. I cried with joy after realising how my mind or my depressive nature could skew every sentence people spoke in such a way. 6 years of depression gone in a night of lsd, music, camp fire and good company. For anyone willing to try it, go for it with no fear, surround yourself with good company and go camping in a forest with music. Nothing to fear but fear itself and you will gain the inner wisdom you need. Also research family history of mental illness and what to expect from certain doses. Nothing can prepare you for the wacky nature of lsd though so just ride that train for 8 hours and spend the last 2 to 3 talking with friends.

I think it’s funny how my parents say that they want what’s best for me and want me to be happy but yet raised me in such a way that not only do I need a dominant other but I also need a grandiose gesture putting me at the ultimate highest risk to be depressed and unsatisfied.

Get your 6-8 hours of sleep. Keep a schedule. Excercise, or at least be somewhat physically active regularly. Try to eat as well and varied as you can. I can also recommend C, D and B12 vitamins. Plus Omega-3 and CBD oil. I was deep down in the depths of depression and anxiety 1-2 years ago and this has brought me back to a normal state of being where i feel happy with who i am and what i've got. I have no grandiose goals in life and i've never relied on personal relationships for approval and gratification. I believe some just get dealt this card and i do feel like a better person after having gone through it.

balleur Doesn’t work in many, many cases unfortunately. I spent years fighting *against* depression instead of fighting depression itself. I did exactly what you did: I found external value that I thought would make me feel better, and it did for a while. But depression always came back, worsening every time until suicide became a concrete thought. All those years I needed (and still need) to address what was broken; being active only served as a defence mechanism.

Yeah, something that always comes up is the "excercise, eat better, get a hobby!" argument. Even if you find yourself with the strength and ability to reform towards healthier habits, the breadth and width of the experience of depression means that that simply won't work for everyone. I am very active professionally, physically and socially, and have been working towards more complete physical health, but the specter of depression colours everything I do.

The key is to work and work and keep working on getting better on anything. As you get better at the chosen craft your begin to love it and as you start to love it, that love helps you push through the hard parts. Also an artist is not just a painter or dancer an artist is also the master plumber as is the chief Engineer. Art is anything done with love and care.

Real depression is when you lose interest in everything. Even your passion, hobby, lover,etc. seems a burden to you. You get drowned in the darkest depths of life where everything appears dull and meaningless. Being awake seems a torture to soul, you want to sleep the whole day or if possible get out of this life. "I didn't had the freedom to start my life, maybe atleast I should be granted the freedom to end it" thats what comes to my mind. The remedy you suggested is for people who have temporary anxiety, I wish if only it were that simple for a depressed soul.

I mean, depression itself is pretty straight forward, it's just a series of thought patterns that end in a negative personal image. The cure to depression in itself is actually really straightforward as well, just change the thought patterns. But where you're getting hung up, is that you're probably frustrated because they're making it seem like it's easy to do, and for some people its easier than others. Some people are more prone to depression, and some people have more difficulties pulling through compared to others. So no, they don't "lack depth of understanding" I'd say that's you who lacks the understanding, everyone is different.

@@shuacliff_7029 That's literally what Cognitive Behavioral therapy is (the SCIENTIFICALLY and EMPIRICALLY proven method for dealing with depression). CBT is essentially just adjusting thought patterns :P What did you think it was? Jedi mind tricks voodoo magic? You either put in the work or you don't. I was angry, pitty'd myself and would argue with random people getting triggered on the internet like you. But after I sat down and actually took responsibility for my life and my emotions things became much better, I hope you can do the same :)

Like so many things, the method for solving a problem so obvious when you learn the solution. Although these ideas have been kicking around in my, very depressed, head for years, somehow, by hearing them from the outside something seems to have been triggered inside of me. Having spent 10 years in severe, clincial depression no solution is going to happen instantly but this really makes me think - and makes so much sense. Many things come into focus. Thank you!

Moral attainment is also a form of power game, but your influence, and your own received gains plays out differently. It's another form of hierarchy, but the virtue is still the will to power.

It does. Guilt of not being able to do what you wish to. Guilt of not achieving your potential. Guilt of not living upto expectations, not being good enough. Guilt of failing everyone around you. Guilty of wasting time away when you know you need to get up and do something. Guilt will be different for everyone. So yes, guilt leads to this continued sadness.

That is true ...but "letting go" is an immensely hard thing to do...until you do it ! and its very very easy to fall back into the trap ...self doubt is the primary cause of needing attachment in the first place, if you aren't sure of "Who you are" then you will seek confirmation and reassurance of this unknown ....causing you to be dependant on others ...trust yourself and enjoy your fuck ups ...they're just part of the journey !

The funny thing is my depression stems from low self esteem and anxiety/stress due to my parents I figured out that everything they taught me, their “ideologies” were simply a reflection of their own upbringing and that they truly never believed that they were just programmed to believe like that. Once I realized my self conscious thoughts were sounding like my parents giving me guilt trips over me being happy I realized I had to think for myself and rewire my brain like a baby. Form my own thoughts and what not they set me up for failure which is the reason I’m scared to have children I don’t want to raise a child with bad habits and a poor future because of me. There’s a video on KZbin that’s called “why the rich stay rich and poor stay poor” it explains that each party has a certain way of thinking and why things don’t change for their future children etc it’s interesting but yeah I’m happy to see people in deep though are out there I’m used to seeing sheep and cattle wander the streets

I have been observing myself very closely for the last 9 months, every thoughts, behaviour, thinking patterns, compulsiveness, fleeting happiness, pain, cycles including my body. The revelations I have been having are amazing. I don’t need a psychologist to deal with my anxiety, sorrow, pain and depression, I am learning on my own just by watching the random videos and using my own life experience.

Wow. You describeddescribed me better than I could. I have been running my business by myself for years, like a hermit, and the gloom I perceive when I see the fragility of others and the system we pertain to, has even cultivated over the years of my own sufferings and loss, while observing the worst of society to understand the psychology that isn't full filled in others who turn to addiction and the homeless afflictions it brings to their existence. My drug of choice is cramming knowledge and working 16-18 hour days, but it is exhausting with the only ambition to know enough so when I'm old and physically useless, I can teach my lessons to those who will listen

Depression is Anger turned inwards. Unresolved anger is trapped inside the nervous system and the subconcious mind which can be released through Hatha Yoga, Qigong, Tai Chi. Treating with medication just makes the problem worse, just a band aid on a hidden wound. Talking therapies just make the unfortunate individual relive the cause the their depression. Dysfunctional families are the root cause of the problem. And starts the process of bullying, dehumanising energies which increase exponentially. Till the depressed person decides enough is enough release their pain in a holistic way.....

I'm a creative, (music, design, apparel) and have come to the realization that depression is something I'll be dealing with for the rest of my life. After years of extreme highs and followed by even more extreme lows, I've learned to accept it. Depression acts as ground wire allowing me to complete the circuit which powers my creativity. Ironically enough, if it wasn't for depression I would of never been able to do half the things I've accomplished with my life. You are saving lives brother. Thank you.

My depression comes more from the 'Caesar or nothing' mentality. My whole life I've had problems talking to women. So I thought that I had to become rich and famous and there was no other way for me to get a girlfriend. So I wasted years of my life trying to achieve that goal. Then one day I got a girlfriend and I realized that I don't have to be rich or famous, I just need to be myself. So now I'm going back to school to try and get a decent job. I realized that I don't have to 'make it' in order to be happy. I don't have to be famous in order for people to like me. I haven't given up on my music or writing, I just realized that it's not that big of a deal if I'm not successful.

BattyMusic The desire for things we will never get is what makes people depressed. Everyone cannot be successful which means it is very risky to put everything into trying to be successful. It is possible to find happiness in whatever you do and most importantly in yourself. You just have to not give a fuck about what others think. Everyone is different, whatever you chooce to do there will be a partner for you who will love you for who you are.

Pour your passion into appreciating the smaller things along the way-value the journey, never the goal, because it’s the journey that holds the secret to your happiness. When you throw everything you have at just your end goal, even if you do achieve it, you’ll be unhappy again once the novelty of it wears off-you’ll always need a new goal to reach to be happy, and that is precisely how you perpetuate unhappines, lack of fulfillment, and depression.

Great video. I think one area this doesn't touch in regards to mental health and depression is regarding those that have gone through severe levels of abuse, which without help result in the individual having pretty much no capacity to change the state that they have been left in for their life.

I was depressed my whole life but I didn't know that. I suffered from depression since I was an infant. In the past two years I took massive action to fix myself and become the greatest version I could be. I rarely have a temporary episode of depression and I'm convinced that in the near future I'll be completely free of depression. If you really wish to be happy, you have to do what's necessary to achieve it.

Its so well presented and the information in itself so invaluable that I believe it should be taught in school, preferably in high school. There is so much benefit to be found through such a course, I honestly think it would better people’s lives, their choices, mindsets and behaviors, and thus benefit society as a whole. Why do we attach self-worth to external factors? Best solution is to remember you’re attaching your self-worth and happiness to the mediocre herd not the higher human beings, once you become at peace with being ok to fail and expecting nothing from the herd is when you can focus on yourself to achieve the wonderful state of pride. For anyone who is here to derive some kind of hope or light from this video in these darkly times, No such luck. After a debilitating series of classic paintings and Duh moments about your life that make you suffer the added value of taking away even the last little dash of hope you were holding onto, the solution that is offered is 'Just do something new ' If that is the solution I doubt it is giving into your internet addiction by snacking on just another pretentious dead horse like this video. Mission accomplished, Like the title promised, 10/10 depression inducing

I really despise you for this video. It was a cold tight slap across my face. Emotionally unavailable parents, chasing a grandiose dream, faking a persona of a happy and wise person are all that happening to me. But this ideology of chasing a dream that I adopted was a way of combating my prolonged depression, now you are robbing me of that panacea. I can see the truth in your words but living an existential crisis is not an easy deal. You say to experiment with new habits and environment, well it is hard to escape oneself.

Immediate action helps more in the short term, but what if you could make gains in how to interpret your past, some kind of catharsis? Mental/emotional energy might be tied up trying to heal these old wounds by doing things that never seem to work. Just a thought, I wish you good luck!

Adrian Interesting comment thanks for sharing. Most people nowadays know that Catharsis is bad for you. It’s funny, because back in the day it was the opposite. “Punch a pillow when you feel angry.” But apparently acting on your emotions (Catharsis) only serves to create another bad habit aka “what if in the moment you cannot punch a pillow when you are angry?” You would be more infuriated. All in all I am disappointed in this science; I really thought catharsis would be my ticket out. But we have to accept reality I guess.
