Simple solution, make it part of your personality to never lie for any reason. Over time you will naturally stop lying to others and eventually you will discover how you lied to yourself. Education and Silence is the key.

I don't lie to myself least I don't see it that way? Surely I tell the truth to the best of my abilities but if it's secondhand information I speak upon take it with a grain of salt... Because not everything spoken is true....but if you know how to decipher it through your own experiences...Then you can remove the "junk" (lie,useless, misinformation etc) have a wonderful night

John Hurley That’s true. But I don’t even care anymore. Whenever someone can’t handle the truth ... it shows that they are not truthful to themselves. That should never stop you from speaking the truth though- don’t dim your light because it’s too bright for some people. Of course there is also a fine line between speaking the truth and being rude by telling everyone your opinion :)

The best that these videos can offer is like that of a good spiritual teacher or mentor. They point the way. They highlight what we need to focus on my mind on in order to recondition our thought patterns. Because it is that conditioning that leads us astray.

this is why it's impossible to be completely honest with people when you know that they are probably stuck in self deceit. It can almost be cruel to pull them out of it because chances are they wont be able to handle their reality.

@Karaa7595 The video isn't about being honest with other people, it's not about lying to others its about not deceiving yourself. And how do you know when you think you are just being honest with someone else, that you aren't just sharing your opinion with them. Your opinions of someone else could be wrong. We often deceive ourselves about our real motives for doing things. I think a lot of the time most of us aren't even aware that we are deceiving ourselves. And if we ask others they will most likely just give their opinions which may not be that accurate and they may well not understand us well enough. I guess we need to become much more self aware, and this isn't easy

My biggest deceptions are : 1) I pretend to love my some selfish friends who disturb me regularly , yet I pretend that they are my friends . 2) sometimes I get false admiration and I think that's true compliments . 3) I pretend that i can not live without my friends , but I always live alone in their company . And now I'm going to dismantle my all deceptions .

Self-deception sounds very dark and bad when in reality it's just a mechanism of the brain to cope with a very complex world while having limited processing capability. We cannot live in constant doubt or state of conflict, we are just not efficient when we are in doubt, doubt is a transitional state. .Also we cannot focus on more than one thing at a time. With all this in mind you see how ignoring the part that brings the conflict is the most efficient solution and the brain knows this(quite remarkable). What Nietzsche is saying I think is that because of our inherent limitations, we will have to ignore some things over others but at least do it in a smart way by deciding yourself what to ignore, don't do it automatically.

Wrong. This is an excuse. Making excuses is a thinking error. No amoumt of justification makes a negative a positive. Sorry but no. Im a blunt and straight forward person. Being this way keeps me from IG, FB Twitter and alcohol and drugs as a means to cope. Yet everyone around me is the complete opposite. Because they too justify the very things ruining them. Your comment doesn't deserve likes. However it proves people are weak minded and seek only to be justified in their wrong doing. Survival of the fittest. At what point is survival baded on lies and excuses? It isnt. Survival and true achievement are gained through an acceptance of reality. Not a running away from.

The concept you're hinting at is acception, not self deception. We can simply accept that there are things that we cannot understand or cannot control, which constitutes a healthy attitude towards life. The meaning here is to search for truths at all costs even if it disturps or causes discomfort. What you're implying is exactly the opposite.

This channel is brilliant. Thank you for taking the time out to help us discontinue being self-defeating. Some of us *really* don't want to be "losers" and prefer not to settle for mediocrity. That doesn't necessarily mean we will achieve greatness, but I'd rather at least try my hardest and fail than to make no effort. @@TheLily97232 yes. The one that is fearful, angry, jealous, envious, and judgmental about other people. The one that wants to be pretty, handsome or gorgeous whenever you look in the mirror. The one who is afraid for its survival and want to accumulate more and more in order feel secure. Find that out for yourself because that is not who you truly are.
@scottholley4712
@scottholley4712 5 жыл бұрын
There is no authentic self, other than that self that we want to be. The challenges of life that seem to hijack us, are merely events that provide us with insight into our internal disposition, wants and aversions. These hijacking events are necessary for us to discover what really makes us "tick" inside (aka, our authentic self).This is why most people don't discover who they really are(authentic self) until they have been pummeled by the vagaries of life and consequently only then realize who and what they are. and what it takes to truly find contentment. The wise ones, stop trying to be something that goes against their authentic self, and instead embrace their authentic qualities and build their life around it.

This is the first time I'm commenting on a video from AoI even though I've watched all of his videos on philosophy and have been a subscriber for months. This video shattered everything that I was, in a good way. Totally woke me up from my delusions and dropped me further into the pit of nihilism. I keep deceiving myself that I'm some genius but really I'm just smarter than average, far from a genius. Yet, it's this yearning for greatness that I strive to become and so I lie to myself hoping that one day those lies become reality. The last quote really hit home "...and so loses all respect for himself and for others."

Another helpful view from Eckhart Tolle and others is that since the mind/ego is not our true "selves," its faults don't mean our very being is flawed. That's like saying having kidney problems means your whole existence is flawed. The mind/ego is the brain, just another organ serving the body, same thing. Knowing that "we" are not our flaws and that we are not fundamentally a blight on the universe is a step toward unconditional self-love. I recommend Eckhart's work for going into this. (Not to say that flaws shouldn't be addressed, but without unconditional self-love, it's harder to address them compassionately and forgivingly).

Continuing in my addiction to your fantastic videos, this one I can relate to 100% ! At the age of 68 and in remission for throat cancer, there is so much to look back on and keep the mirror of my appearance to others clean as well as to myself, so that I can be as honest and forthcoming as possible with tactfulness to avoid being judge mental towards others while in violation of that very thing myself. That being said however, total honesty can be very dangerous in the day by day interactions with others. Case in point.....your wife asks, honey does this dress make me look fat ? Hahaha......this has been the age old trap many of us men fall into and to hold onto our relationship we have the choice to lie to our partner and too ourselves or face the dreaded couch for many a night ! As with my first wife in telling the truth to her on several occasions I found myself in divorce court by her hand. The truth is... No the dress doesn't make you look fat, because you are fat and you picked the wrong size for your abundant flesh ! Hahahaha......in my second marriage I had to assume to be a different person and lie to myself to maintain my sex life and avoid the couch. However that became tiresome and frustrating to my wanting to be an honest man, and later in the relationship my honesty came out and low and behold, another notch in the handle of my gun of truthful answers, left me once again in divorce court. Since then I have acquired the skills of self defense in that area and will not go for strike three !. I find it a very lonely existence to be honest with everyone, but more important to be honest with myself that I cling to the saying.... What you see, is what you get !. For what ever time I have left, this is my way of life and have abandoned worrying whether or not I please anyone, for it is their choice not mine to except the truth I might give,or reject it and me as well. In the 1960's I was a proffesional drummer and on stage had to be who I wasn't for the crowds, but in doing so lost my own identity as to who I was because of living the lie. I find now that that the best filter to lasting relationships with the right people is the truth. I won't waste anymore time living a lie to please others, and thus being true to myself.

I find it really interesting that the discussion of unmasking the false self is being held right now. I don't know if it's just my perception of things, but I have the impression that a lot of us are going through this right now. It is so hard to breathe sometimes, it feels like my heart is breaking, and the weight of every choice or lack of is unbearable. However, as I keep moving forward I see the shadows fade away. For anyone going through this: do not lose faith. Keep honest with yourself and others, even if it hurts, and as stated in the lecture, only move towards that which you will also become. Do not run away from yourself, nor stagnate on your mistakes and fears.

Wow! is the reality of our existence really all that tragic and dark? I am beginning to think that too much self-exploration is too toxic to our existence, maybe being happy go lucky is the way to be in this weird world.

They say ignorance is bliss for a reason, however, there are dangers in this theory as well, for example, do you really want to be a blind and manipulated slave of the state? If a paycheck is an agreeable exchange for you, in order to overlook this fact of modern society, then yes, self exploration = bad. If you are naturally curious, and want more out of your life, then self exploration is one of the few ways to get there....

Dude! You are taking several thousand words to put forth a very simple concept. When I was very young my Mom told me to never lied to myself because we tend to believe it when we do. But, if a stranger lies to us we'll likely question it. She also stressed that lying to oneself is a forecast for disaster. The result is I've always been a realist and being a retired pilot it was good that I constantly faced reality. You know, not pretending "flame-out" was ten minutes later than it was.

It may not be, but a well-developed persona is necessary for psychological health. I think a lot of people discredit the persona, but as long as you realize that it's not the totality of who you are, it's a very important element of your personality.

That's the point! To develop your personality! Being born isn't an accomplishment, friend. You don't just come into the world a perfectly whole human being, not sure if you had noticed :P So we have to "work at" becoming who it is we yearn to be. This was ALWAYS a tough issue for me though growing up. Figuring out how to juxtapose who I wanted to be with who I was. Eventually I learned that "what I am" is exactly that "who I am", and nothing else. So if I'm a CEO of BK, or a fry cook at Red Lobster, I'm still ME, no matter what. The question I have to pose to myself though is "Who do I want ME to be?" We all have that choice, to a degree. There's parts of us that are simply lock & stock lol but that's OK cause there's still a world of "moving parts" we can adjust in our personality. Take for example, one of my ABSOLUTE favorite things in the world is to laugh. This is part of "who I am at the core". Why do I say that? Because I enjoy it, and I'm not willing to "give it up". So I "accept" it as an integral part of who I am. Now how I choose to incorporate that in my daily life is where all the choice comes in. I can choose to go the route of a comic, or I can just try to be a funny person in general, I can choose the kinda comedy I pursue, and when I tell what jokes. But the core, the real "meat" of who I am, someone that loves to laugh and get others to laugh, THIS doesn't change no matter which route I choose to take it. That's how I was able to combine the two ideas. Once I realized there was a "basic nature" to me, you take that and try to understand it's "potential". And that this potential has an infinite number of ways of manifesting itself. THATS what you decide on. HOW to manifest the parts of yourself that are integral to YOU. Cause as well all know, there's a good time to make a joke about rape.....and a terrible time lol and THAT is where the choice comes into play. But yea, there's parts of me that I didn't really...."choose" per say, like the love of comedy I have, it was just always there. So find out what you love, and figure out HOW to love it!!! ;) That's all. Take care.
