Zenkichi Hasegawa is the latest member of the Phantom Thieves in Persona 5 Strikers, the sequel to Persona. And with Zenkichi's addition we see the first Persona protagonist who is also a parent and so I want to take a look into the Psychology of Zenkichi Hasegawa, his grief after losing his wife, his relationship with his daughter, his role as a police officer, and how he was able to become a Phantom Thief. Zenkichi is a man of many roles and in turn this makes him such an incredible addition to the team and I hope you enjoy this deep dive into a man who develops so incredibly much over the course of the story.
I also want to note that all counselors will come at situations from different theoretical orientations, backgrounds, and belief systems. My opinions correlate with my own education and professional experience up to this point in my education with a Master's Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling.

The whole Zenkichi Akane Situation is just like with Dojima and Nanako from P4. The main difference is that Joker and the Phantom Thieves just met them years later then Yu and the Investigation Team met Dojima and Nanako. It is like a What if Scenario like What if Dojima and Nanako never met Yu and Zenkichi and Akane are the result of it.

From a different perspective, Zenkichi as the real protagonist of Strikers, and the Phantom Thieves are a bunch of wacky teenager's he's stuck babysitting. Oh man, I LOVE Zenkichi's speech during the Mariko arc. It's interesting how Zenkichi and Dojima are superficially similar, they both avoid spending time with their daughter because they're a living reminder of their wife's death. The huge difference is how their daughters act, for one Akane's a bit older, but also she resents her father over what happened, which makes reconciliation a LOT harder. Kaburagi is a very underrated character in my opinion. An older woman in the police force, surrounded by corruption, who's trying her best to do good, and eventually DOES do the right thing. Zenkichi isn't the only one who shows there's still hope for P5's justice system. Zenkichi's awakening is REALLY interesting if you've played P4, as it seems like Zenkichi's Shadow was on the cusp of going berserk like the Investigation Team's, and he just barely manages to admit the truth to himself before it could happen. Zenkichi's dilemma is interesting and a good example of Strikers' morality being a bit less black-and-white than vanilla P5's. Defying corrupt people in power is all well and good, but you can't forget that they're, well, powerful, and when you've got a family to take care of who they could very easily target, finding the right time to take action isn't easy. But because he wasn't honest about that to Akane, she got the wrong idea and thought he didn't care about her, which let to HER issues... I love the Kyoto Jail. Zenkichi vs Konoe was also an AMAZING moment.

I love how similar Dojima and Zenkichi seem at first, and while they definitely are in several ways, they are have so many little nuances that make their circumstance so different. I really loved Zenkichi's story.

Its not that Royal isn't canon to Strikers, all re-released versions of the Persona games are taken as "canon," its just that they structured Strikers' story so that anyone could jump into it, no matter what version of P5 you are coming from, whether it is vanilla P5, Royal or even the anime.

Remember that the original P4 Arena didn't take Golden into account, but Ultimax did, and P4 Arena is canon to Ultimax. So there's no reason Royal and Strikers can't both be canon.

This definitely makes sense. It's very vague, which is nice but since a lot of what was in Royal isn't acknowledged because technically P5S was made first I just imagine it as a sequel to vanilla vs Royal though I agree thinking on it now that it could be a sequel to both.

I like to think the reason why kasumi isn’t in striker in story because she do summer gymnastics programs, but still texts the phantom thieves like Also with akechi and he alive like royal ending applies, I image he watching the phantom thieves in the news in jail and is both amazed and frustrated by joker and the gang still doing it.

They made it as accessible as possible even at the cost of a more robust story founded in P5 later events. To me it’s still a good story because mostly built around new characters. Sophia and Zenkichi are the true protagonists while the others never really struggled in the story. It all makes for a more light and casual story with just a bit of social criticism. To enjoy it you just have to not expect much from it.

Unlike Akechi who needed Royal for his motives and goals to actually make sense as a whole, Zenkichi’s motives are depicted well enough to the point that it tells us a lot about him without saying too much. Actually, I think Zenkichi might be one of the best realised characters in the Persona 5 series outside of the Royal newcomers because of how they took the time to let him be a developed character before becoming a playable character five Jails in. I think if Haru’s story in Vanilla P5 was handled the way they did with Zenkichi’s, it would have alleviated the issues with her joining the gang late in the game. I think Persona 6 could stand to benefit from developing their party member characters the same way before their eventual step into the fray. He’s that well-executed of a character to me in one game without needing an updated re-release to help us really see his character for what it is unlike Akechi’s.

Exactly! I think that's one of the reasons why Zenkichi and Akane exist in this game, is to show just how much influence Yu eventually had on the Dojimas (not to mention the rest of his cast, but that's something different to tackle). You can even hear the resignation in Ryotaro's voice at points in the game, especially when he talks about Chisato's death, and between that and the alcohol he was definitely heading for the same disaster that we see in Zenkichi's life.

It’s weird. There are time I find Akane’s grievances understandable and others I find her kinda insufferable, especially after Zenkichi reveals the truth to her. Guess grief does a number on the psyche. Edit: Fun fact, Akane has the Japanese word for “red” in her name while her mother’s name is Japanese for blue.

Plus, when Zenkichi reveals all in Akane's Jail, it was to Akane's Shadow, rather then Akane herself, and the fact her Shadow had become distorted and corrupted by EMMA she was incapable of thinking rationally anymore.

Her father disappointed her so many times and what he did not do was solving the issue with Aoi. She had every right to be angry at him and her being distrustfulis very understandable. She reacted like any child does when parents set themselves up too high, only to fail; refuse to believe them. It was wrong of her laying all the blame on him and being way too judgmental, but how she reacts is his responsibility here. She should have been more open-minded though.

I consider Royal canon to Strikers but Strikers’ a stand-alone tale that tells it’s own story and occasionally calls back to P5 Vanilla/Royal whenever it needs to for the original eight. Considering that only ten characters from the former game appears in Strikers with one being a voice-only appearance while the rest of Strikers features brand new characters, Violet, Akechi and Maruki’s absences are the least of our worries. Not even Yoshida gets a mention once.

I like persona games very much as well as anyone, and when one of the cast members is an older person who is having just as much of problem working through their issues, its very refreshing. Its also not been seen since Persona 2, so that is even better! I was practically cheering as Valjean emerged as the contract was forged, and the meaning was not lost on me. Fits him well.

I want to thank you for your Persona 5 videos; it actually made me go back to my own Persona 5 OC and realize how much potential depth he had with concepts of instrumental grief and pent-up rebellion. Namely, he lost his mother in a car crash caused by a drunk driver who got away with it. This character would take up an interest in automotive mechanics as to ensure that no one he cared for would die in another car accident. What's interesting is that he also becomes the 'daredevil' of the crew, as his knowledge and driving skills allowed him to take risks that only he'd be willing to take instead of those he cares about.

Excellent video! I loved Zenkichi and Akane. Persona has done similar father/daughter stories before but it's not often we get one as a core teammate. I think he's very important because to the themes of the Phantom Thieves and P5 as a whole if you think about what both stand for. I do hope we see more adult party members in the future, not just for variety's sake but because the way Persona tackles character narratives and psychology themes opens up a whole new world of potential with adult lifestyles in mind. Also, I see no reason why Maruki would be non canon in Strikers, there are several references to Royal especially in the Japanese script. He's just off driving taxis now.

😁 great video I'm glad you covered one of the coolest dad in the persona series, but the way I saw Zenkichi was a father who last the love of his life, and feared losing his reason for living, which was his daughter, which cause him to turn his back on the justice he wanted and fought for, even if it means having his daughter hate him, he would keep her safe, I loved how persona 5 strikers gave us a really well defined character like him and we see how grows from being with the phantom thieves, plus like you said his awakening was so freaking cool and epic, and his outfit too is so cool.

I dunno if you would read it after half a year, but I am a fan of your vids since Haru's and Sumire's (I felt so called out by those, help), and I beg for you to cover Persona 2 at some point. Tatsuya Suou is one of my most favourite characters in Persona (aside Akihiko Sanada), and his story and moral growth from Persona 2 IS to EP is somewhat inspiring for me as an infantile person. Plus adult cast of P2EP is extremely interesting, all of them are coping with their own problems their own way, and seeing that P5S reflects the same process happening with adults... it is comforting for a P1-2 fan. A lot of the reasons why people call P5S a lazy reskin of P5 and other Persona tropes are superficial at best; Zenkichi being “Dojima 2.0” is one of them. Just because two characters’ arcs start in the same place doesn’t mean they’re the same characters by default. It’s their actual characterization and arcs that make all the difference! Akane absolutely loathes her father for not going after Owada, which is a driving force for Zenkichi to man up and go after the guy. While Nanako is more-so confused on why Dojima acts so distant. Dojima then realizes that he needs to be less obsessed with work and just spend more time with his daughter. Yes, both these characters have very similar origin stories, but calling them the same character is surface-level at the very least. The first three arcs in Strikers get the same amount of flack and it’s pretty undeserved. Ann, Yusuke, and Haru use their past experience to sympathize and relate to the monarchs, and this is all to make them see the error of their ways. If these arcs were rehashes, those three would’ve regressed to their original starting points from the base game (Ann is wishy-washy about modeling instead of committing to it, Yusuke has to relearn what it means to be an artist, etc.). The only arc you could call a rehash in terms of story is the Sendai one, but even then it’s still debatable. But the rest of the arcs are refreshing enough and run over the rehash complaint…..wait that was a poor choice of words. Sorry if my tangent was off-putting, but I just adore Strikers and it’s how I think a video game sequel is done! It fixes a lot of the main game’s criticisms, and I’m at the point where I’m hesitant to return to the original game without thinking of Strikers.

I do love all the characters but I can’t help but hate the fact that some of the actions of the phantom thieves especially the girls, there are absolutely no consequences for them. The girls can do no wrong while the boys can do nothing right! I.e. I hate Makoto’s actions at the bathhouse toward the boys, and no apology afterwards! It’s not fair! Where’s the equality!

In this case specifically, it's a recurring gag of the series, where the boys accidentally end up in same bath of the girls and they get punished for the situation (even though in both P3 and P4 it wasnt their fault, nor was it in P5S). In fact it's a straight recreation of the Persona 3 event, which goes exactly in same way (and leads to the EXECUTED meme from Mitsuru), well except in P3 you actually had the option to escape unseen and avoid getting murdered :) It's also worth mentioning that as the post above said, it's typical anime humour, and Japan is not yet on the same level of the rest of the world where it comes to avoid content that can be seen as sexist, homophobic or racist (see the entire gay scene controversy in P5R).

@@ThoughtBubbleYT I just had a thought. What if Maruki got a hold of Akame? The girl was already an emotional mess and his Actualization would’ve given her what she wanted (her mom). The second the Phantom Thieves start advancing on Maruki, she will become emotionally unstable and become his bodyguard just to keep her mother alive in this new world. Akame would be a bigger threat than in Strikers and the Phantom Thieves would have to fight harder to win. Hell, she might end up creating her own Persona or, in the same case of P4, her own Shadow fusion just to defend Maruki. That’s a scary thought, imo.
