Restaurant scene with McShane & Winstone best acting & scene in the film IMHO.
Unfortunately have to keep these under 5 mins to avoid blocking, hence lack of his other scenes here. PART TWO HERE - • The Psychopathy of Ted...

When Gel swears, it’s a callback to Don’s question: “Why are you swearing, I’m not swearing?” Teddy’s face instantly freezes as soon as the “fucking” comes out of Gel’s mouth, because he knows Gel is frightened, is trying to hide something and is using bravado to try and appear bold. It’s a wonderful touch in a script that’s awash with swearing the rest of the time - it’s the LACK of swearing that denotes the true gangster in this situation.

I always found McShane's character far more frightening than Kingsley's. Teddy is the kind to kill whilst smiling at you (or shortly after), at least Don was a c*nt and loud with it, you would more likely know about it, Teddy, you would never know, you'd just be going to your car one evening and get either stabbed or shot by some paid killer whilst you looked for your keys

True.I didn't think much of Ray Winstone after some awful films but this is a reminder he was a very capable actor in this type of role.Everybody rages about Ben Kingsley understandably but all the acting in this film even the minor parts is top class and this creates the scenes for Don Logan. The sense of fear and unease the cast creates is memorable

I guess there's a reason they called Teddy "Mr. Black Magic." How he handled Gal and Don. He made sure Don was dead and not an issue and in the process, put Gal in his debt by sparing his life & also making him an accomplice to murder. Not to mention, he knew everything about what happened to Don which he could also use as leverage against Gal. When Teddy tells Gal near the end of the film, "I must come by and pay my respects," I took it to mean that if Teddy wanted Gal's services in the future, he'd have Gal by the balls.
@Ditka-89
@Ditka-89 2 жыл бұрын
Good insight. I always wondered why he didn’t just kill Gal. Gal killed his right hand man-seems like a pretty unforgivable offense in the gangster code of ethics. Pair the debt of being spared and becoming an accomplice, and Gal probably has no choice to turn down any jobs in the future. This movie was rife for a sequel.
@jacksmith4460
@jacksmith4460 Жыл бұрын
@@Ditka-89 It did not fit his purpose, Teddy truly did not give a shit about Don, well, not enough to take revenge. That's not how Teddy works, he has something over Gal now, and if he chooses revenge it will be later down the line anyway. Gal is potentially useful to Teddy in the future, and he knows he has leverage on him now. He also knows Gal is scared to hell of him and he will jump if he says so. Teddy truly is a psychopath, he does not care about anyone around him, and see's everyone as tools, unlike Don he is smooth , slick and charming. Don is more a sociopath, and has a strange streak of loyalty through him, that has been warped and twisted perhaps for a very long time, Teddy does not have that. From Teddy's psycho POV, Don was just a useful "heavy" to send in to shit people up,or do a particularly violent undertaking, plus he could lead through fear, but he ultimately was too outwardly aggressive and abrasive. Teddy is savvy and knows how to mix it with high society. Don had his uses, but Gal is highly skilled, and therefore to Teddy, he is very useful,and him killing Don is leverage for him to use. That's my guessing anyway
@tomd2103
@tomd2103 Жыл бұрын
I think the "pay my respects" line was a warning to Gal that Teddy knew where he was and could get to him at anytime. I think it becomes clear by the end that Teddy knows Don is dead and that Gal had some part to play in it. That means he now has Gal where he wants him.

What's more it was believable with believable characters, even the gangsters Teddy and Don, while being crazy and over the top they still have a realism to them. I've known some dodgy people over the years including a few guys like Don, true psychos who are only happy when they are causing pain and chaos and even when they're on your side it's still bad because they are so unpredictable everyone is constantly nervous around them because no one knows wtf they will do or say from one minute to the next and they will do serious damage to anyone who not only does something to piss them off but off do it to people for perceived wrongs that almost certainly didn't happen. Teddy put it altogether at breakfast. He would have killed Gal right then without hesitation but he needed Gal for the job. Teddy was still 50/50 on killing Gal on the way to the airport but because Gal performed well in the heist and because Teddy didn’t particularly like Don either, Teddy let Gal live. Also, Teddy empathized that both of them dealt with horrible psychopaths in this profession. Also, Teddy kept his rep as he meted out some psychological punishment on Gal by taking his share and scaring the crap out of him.

Why would Don call Gal at the Spanish airport, when he'd just left his house, which the time space would've been 30 minutes? Gal should never had made up the phone call and just said the last time he saw him was when he left in the cab.

@@Onmysheet Gal was not known for being smart. But maybe Gal didn’t realize that Teddy would be able to ascertain (quickly) that Don never made it to Heathrow. Gal likely did not want Teddy to think that Don was still in Spain because that would put the spotlight on Gal.

The parts where Teddy asks Gal about Dons disappearance are good, but overlooked by the drive to the airport (for whatever reason), which IMO are more sinister. As Teddy knows something went on but his personal greed let's him overlook it, as he gets Gals and Dons share 😉. Theres no loyalty amongst thieves, especially when loot is being divided up. BTW, I didn't realise this was a two part clip. They covered my point perfectly in part 2 😉

Teddy never did the job for greed, he did it to prove he could, it was an ego trip .. why do you think he murdered the guy after robbing his business ? The whole job was a massive fuck you to a guy who thought he was untouchable .. he took gal along on the murder so he can never settle down comfortably abroad, he will forever worry about being linked to that murder and that’s his punshment for lying to mr black magic himself lol

3:35 the little hand movement by Ray Winstone there is genius. We know he's scared, Teddy Bass knows he's scared and Gal is trying his hardest to cover it so much that he doesn't know what to do with his own hands, we've all been there and it's such a clear giveaway that he's terrified. He can't even remember what to do with a cigarette, something a smoker does purely from memory
