The PTR 91 (G3 Clone) Rifle - Intro, Operation, Teardown & Bolt Gap Check (Part 1)

This is the First of what will be Several Video's on the PTR-91 (G3 / H&K 91 Clone).
In this video we will go over what we will be doing with the PTR, How the Delayed Blowback Operating system works, Teardown / Disassembly / Reassembly of the Rifle and How to check the Bolt Gap.
In Upcoming Video's we will also be sighting in and using the Sighmark Wraith HD Digital Day / Night scope on the PTR, and
Doing a full 200-300 round break in with Accuracy testing using several types of Ammunition comparing how they group both early on in the break in and after completing the break in to see how the break in works and if it's necessary and beneficial So Stay Tuned as we've got some interesting stuff coming up on the Channel

I want to help you out. Since there's no gas tube, no piston to drive the bolt back, etc, you cant claim gas as the reason it moves. The famas works on the priniciple of mechanical disadvantage, requiring a very long travel in the carrier compared to the lever that pushed it out, before it opens. This does the same. Wheels are essentially infinite length levers. Your rollers are the levers. When pressure hits the bolt face, the only way it can move backward is by the rollers squishing themselves into the bolt. The only way they can squish themselves in is to compress the head of the locking stick. The locking stick (I forget its technial name rn) contacts the bolt carrier on its butt end. This means the rollers push the front of it back, the back of it pushes the bolt carrier back, and then the carrier can drag the bolt with rollers inside it back all the way. Remember, the rollers are infinitely long levers, just like gears and sprockets. The size of the levers relative to.. other parts, determinies the mechanical advantage or disadvantage like the famas.

Hitting the bolt with a hammer is not necessary if you get it lined up right and push down on the backside of the lever to compress the spring a little bit you're able to push it together with your hands no need for a hammer

You are correct, You could press down on the backside of the lever, however the force required is rather excessive without either a clamping device or an extra pair of hands, so tapping the bolt to me is the easiest way to go and considering the normal cycling of the action in use it is not detrimental. Also I've worked with several rifles of the roller locking / delayed blowback design over the years and my experience has been that with use eventually things do loosen up a bit to where you can do it by hand, but even then a gentle tap works better because with just a slight over-travel from the assembly position the bolt will snap to the locked position with great enthusiasm and without forgiveness of any skin or soft tissue that gets in the way so maintaining minimal contact is wise! ~ Thanks for the Input!

Might be better off using 147-155gr loads for accuracy testing. PTRs don't tend to group as well with medium weight or heavy for caliber .308 rounds, IMO probably one of the major reasons some people feel that they're inaccurate rifles.

Absolutely True, they were designed for NATO ball rounds and generally lose some accuracy with hunting type ammo, and I think that also between the Wraith and the standard heavy trigger also didn't do any favors in this case either.

@@PhoenixRising62 I replaced the slim hand guard with an HK wide hand guard. Will be sending my trigger pack and recoil buffer to Bill Springfield. After that, maybe add a good muzzle brake or compensator to add in recoil mitigation.

@@j.p.4541 I did the same thing here... More comfortable and they don't heat up like the slim ones. Haven't thought about changing out the flash hider for a muzzle break. I've also replaced the Trigger pack with an enhanced / tuned one from HKparts.net ( hkparts.net/product/ptr-hk91-g3-308-7-62-enhanced-trigger-pack-match-p17014.htm ), huge improvement.

Phoenix Rising where can i find a OD green wide hand guard? Im new to the HK G3 world so i don’t know some of the main online HK part’s stores. Anyway I’ve looked all over the web, would any European stores have any wide hand guards?

Thank you much for this video, I just bought a 91GI today and I was actually kinda scared that I had some sort of catastrophic problem with it being slightly difficult to unlock the bolt. Forum posts are not good at explaining the difference between "Difficult" force, and "I can literally stand on my charging handle and it won't come out of battery" force. I thankfully have the prior.

Your Welcome! Yea, the PTR's and the Century Arms CETME's are both that way... I've had the pleasure of having an HK-93 for a period of time in 5.56 and it wasn't nearly as rough to operate all the way around. I really do like the platform but the fact that it is a still a blowback based .308 so the recoil system and the lock-up for the bolt head (for the delay function) by necessity have to have significantly more spring tension / force than just about any other battle rifle of the era and if you've not used them before it's a bit unnerving. I've got about 400 rounds through mine and it's still very tight to unlock.

@@galvanizeddreamer2051 Agreed, Century Arms did do a 93 clone, but when I looked at them I wasn't too impressed with the fit and finish (Century Arms is, well- Century Arms!). The biggest downside with the 93's and Clones are parts seem a little harder to come by and magazines are more pricey.

good job. only complaint, the real HK 91's did have the paddle release when imported. the early JLD's and the PTR's did not. other than that, great job

Thanks! I guess the 91's came both ways. I remember back in 1983 or 1984 when I looked at them they didn't have the paddle (actually picked up a 93, but looked at the 91 and MP5.. Wish I had the ways, means and smarts to get all three back then!), and I remember reading something to the effect that they were removed due to import restrictions, I was thinking they had another import model prior to the 91 that still had the paddle (which may be one of those "I read it on the internet so it has to be true" things).

@ Phoenix Rising You were actually correct. Some (not all) of the HK 41s that came in during the '70s had the paddle along with the grenade tension "bulge" on the front sight base/AKA triple frame. NONE of the HK91s originally came with the paddle on them, only the button on the right side of the gun. Any HK91 you see with a paddle and/or the rifle grenade tension ring has been added after the fact by a smith.

What was the intention with putting the wraith on this gun? Were you planning on hunting with it at night?

Actually No, I Never planned on keeping the Wraith on this rifle, but since I had the Wraith and wanted to do a further review (I had done a Night Vision review between it and the Photon RT in the channel) testing it actually on a rifle and since the Wraith is supposed to be rated for up to .308 the PTR was a good candidate especially since I wanted to do a break in review... So really the intention was more just killing two birds with one stone, and I didn't expect the Wraith to be so problematic based on a couple of pretty glowing reviews of it in other YT Channels. The reality is at least IMO is that from my experience thus far I might put something like a Photon RT on a Rimfire or PCC for close in night varmit use, the Wraith is just a "Novelty" (I will re-mount it on a PCC or .22 and do a further review, but I doubt it will redeem itself, and I will likely do Another RMA once I give it one more chance), and for anything more serious I would go with Traditional Night Vision.

I would stay away from the Wraith at this time, if you look at my review between the Photon RT and the Wraith, the Wraith doesn't hold a candle to the Photon in actual NV capability, and in Part 2 of the PTR review I do a segment on the Wraith and basically I had several big negatives with it... I had a POI shift partway through testing, Numerous focus shifts while shooting (as in focus for a given range take a shot or two and have the image go out of focus and have to re-focus), While recording video I had also had the scope "Lock Up" several times to where I could still see through it, but couldn't stop recording, access the menu or even turn the scope off to where I had to pull the batteries out of it to regain control. That and the Image quality was not that good and lastly there was way too much rubber banding while panning and scanning. So even though the Photon RT is much lower resolution it's a step up from the Wraith IMO.

Perhaps YOU should to do a video on proper assembly and operation to "enlighten" people. But I see that there are no videos or content in your channel so alas the world will never experience your wisdom... only your negative comments. - First the Hammer is Brass and will not damage the bolt. - Second the Rifle is New with incredibly stiff springs for the bolt / cross-wedge (especially being the 7.62x51 variant, the 5.56 is significantly easier) - Third Yes there is a sweet spot where you can easily do it by hand with care depending on the wear on the rifle and spring stiffness, this rifle isn't there yet and I have owned several of this type of action over the years. - Fourth This is a PTR, Not an HK. I've used HK variants, CAI CETME's as well as the PTR, The HK's are Smoother with better fit and finish as one would expect and would likely not be as rough around the edges as the PTR (Which by no means is a Slouch and overall has very good build quality compared to anything CAI put out) Lastly while I encourage people to post, ask questions and provide comments that add information, experience or value for other viewers, your comments do none of the above and have NVA (No Value Added).
