This is actually a sequel to The Wave (2015) movie that I really liked too.
The build up is perhaps too slow for too many people, but I have enjoyed the "there is something horrible about to happen" atmosphere of it. Visuals can rival those of Hollywood, but it also suffers from too many cut-in and shaky camera of "artificially" created frantic atmosphere, because I guess what we're looking at is not action-like or horrific enough otherwise (yeah I'm being sarcastic).
The biggest Hollywood sin - "escape death by a second, every second, for minutes in length" is not as prominent here (exclusively with the main characters, of course), but still present at times which is annoying. Again, I guess they though it wouldn't be thrilling enough otherwise. But that is a Sin that pretty much every "action" movie (yes, disaster movies are action movies too, just not getting shot at) is suffering with, so what am I complaining about?
Conveniently, I did my own edit with only the destruction of Oslo for you to watch, and a bit of the struggle that laid ahead for the main characters as a result of it. If you don't care about anything else, well this is it, almost all of it in terms of destruction.
Disclaimer, everything I mentioned as a flaw is just me nitpicking, because otherwise this is as good Disaster movie as they get (to date).
If you haven't seen it. Go for it! Or, maybe not, maybe you want to watch the Wave (2015) first, because it will be the same people, although in another different mega disaster (what are the odds huh?)
But you will not need to see the Wave (2015) first to understand what is going on or anything like that.
Although, the main character has PTSD from the last disaster and that could help a bit, or not.
I'm sure we will get to the Wave (2105) on this channel too (if KZbin permits) at some point.
Enjoy ;)!

There's one thing that royally irritates me about this scene. They had enough time to get to the elevator area, where they would've been save when the entire floor started shifting. I know that people act on instinct when in stressful situations, but it kinda baffles me how long they just sat there watching the building shift without doing anything to get to a safer area...

As you said, its actually quite likely when something this horrific happens out of nowhere, many people simply freeze in shock and disbelief. It's absolutely possible, and irritating watching it. But there is old saying: "After a battle, everyone is general" XD. I wouldn't be surprised too much if I myself did something stupid or failed to do something obvious in a stressful situation like this. I would like to think that I would be the guy pointing out to people on what to do, but perhaps my brain would reduce into vegetable as well :/ Might I never find out!

@@pibmovieclips True. I still like it, it's just one of those things that make you frustrated as hell when watching. On another note, I'm excited for their upcoming disaster film. I do hope that they'll return to a more typical disaster movie formula with that one, since The Quake was more of a drama than anything else. Good nonetheless, but not really a disaster movie.

@@pibmovieclips No worries, your words stands firm. 😉👍 Norwegians have low expectations when it comes to homegrown movies, but hey, things are getting better. If you are not from Norway, you should check out the diastermovies "Tunnelen" (The Tunnel) from 2019 and The Wave from 2015. The wave is a result of a rockslide into a fjord, killing more or less everyone close by. Has happened before, will happen again. Both were filmed here in my neighbourhood, The Tunnel no more than 10 minutes away, I know actors in both movies, but I have seen neither 😳🙄 yet. They should be worth a look for some cool dramatic footage though. Still, that title was bloody funny and so on the spot I would have thought you were a Norwegian. 😆👍

Oslo is, as far as I know, not a place you'd think of being associated with earthquakes. Then again, neither is central England, where I live, and yet, last year, just a few miles south of where I live, there was a series of four small tremors ( 3.0 on the Richter Scale) in the space of two weeks. It only goes to show that there is nowhere on Earth that doesn't experience them, even if almost all of them barely rattle the windows!
@pibmovieclips
@pibmovieclips 3 жыл бұрын
You absolutely right! The movies (including its predecessor - the Wave 2015) were based upon real risks that might exist, although, highly unlikely to happen. For instance: "At 11.27 on Sunday, October 23, 1904, Norway’s capital city was rocked by an earthquake that measured 5.4 on the richer scale. It wasn’t just felt in southern Norway but over some 800,000 square kilometres, across southern Sweden, as far as Helsinki and parts of northern Poland. There was also at least 18 reported aftershocks that followed the main earthquake." (googled that) During my search I have also found that although geologist think don't currently think that there is any risk of significant Earthquake in Norway, on the other hand their original model calculated that a major Earthquake will be experienced on Norway's territory about every 100 Years. The last one is the former mentioned 5.4 richer scale Earthquake in 1904. Thus - the inspiration for the movie(s). They're little bit behind schedule as it is :/

@@pibmovieclips When you think about it, the fact that our world is spherical, when rock likes to lay flat if it can, kind of leads to faults and fractures everywhere, and if one bit moves, the rest has to, sooner or later. sometimes the shift is singular and relatively big, leading to a tremor that is noticed, or it comes as series of much smaller ones that get lost in the general hubbub of traffic and human generated ground shaking. About ten years ago, I took a week's holiday in Iceland, staying in an hotel in Reykjavik. I chatted quite often with one of the receptionists, who explained that some nearby construction work required blasting the bedrock to accommodate the new buildings. She told me that Reykjavik experienced about 100 seismic tremors a day, most so weak they went unfelt- the dynamite explosions were stronger. I returned home, and 24 hours after getting back, was woken at 1am by the house I was living in shaking. Sure enough, when I checked the news, we had had an earthquake that time of night. I found it highly amusing and ironic that after spending time in a country known for volcanic and seismic activity, and felt nothing, I got back to my own and got woken by the strongest tremor we had had in ten years!

Love to watch this movie but can't find it on streaming services (YET) I saw THE WAVE AND IT WAS GREAT. I have seen some of the comments and I had to disagree with some of them. I lived through an earthquake (7.1) in my country. When you're in the middle of it, you don't react fast enough (believe me) You see all those disaster movies and think, why are they frozen and don't move to a safe place, they should move to out of danger. Well, when everything around you as moving an falling it take a while for your brain to process the information and realize what's happening. Some people react instinctively and move into action but most will go into a shock and will freeze right in the spot, unavailable to do anything specially if you never experience a real earthquake.

I don't think they wanted to portray it as big tragedy as it would have been. It would require another rating, change the movie style into something else and their budget would take a massive hit. I think it was executive decision to keep it family friendly and "easy to consume" whilst saving budget and i personally think it was the right decision.

Not really. The ground doesn't just explode during an earthquake, and the girl wouldn't be able to stand. An earthquake is not a slowly moving wave of destruction. It's almost simultaneous, and it's a series of seismic waves causing a continuous tremor. Given the intensity seen in the movie the girl wouldn't be able to stand, she would be on the floor.

You got it all wrong; it's them who are causing the disasters! They need to move as far away from people as possible, to not bring the wrath of gods on others! (rewind clock 500y + and this is most likely the conclusion of any community. XD)

The skyscraper and tall buildings falling and breaking apart like that appears to be extremely unlikely. Not to mention the force of gravity and fatality rate.
@pibmovieclips
@pibmovieclips 3 жыл бұрын
oh, the fatality rate is totally off, but I understand that they desperately fought to keep it PG-13, so showing horrible deaths of being squashed were totally off the books - never going to happen in the first place. I don't personally have problem with how the building were destroyed - for the most part - but I wouldn't be competent to assess that in the first place. Care to explain more? I would like to know your objections in detail.

If you stood on top of that roof yourself, there would be nothing you could do but watch and pray. even if you we're on the ground and felt the treble before it all goes south. Your chance to "run" into "safety" is exactly zero. Unless you have access to teleport of sorts at moment's notice, there is nothing you could do or go to "outrun" Earthquake. You know the Earthquake drill right? Find nearest shelter (something solid to cover over you) and stay put! Anything else but that is decreasing your chance to survive.
