Thank you to Bethesda & id for supplying me with early access to this release.
A full remaster of QUAKE II has released on August 10th 2023, and I've played everything this new game has to offer.
From the press release:
"Enjoy the original, authentic version of Quake II, now enhanced with up to 4K* and widescreen resolution support, enhanced models, improved animations and gore, improved and restored AI behaviors, enhanced cinematics, dynamic and colored lighting, anti-aliasing, depth of field, and the original, heavy rock soundtrack by Sonic Mayhem.
Go beyond Quake II with both original mission packs, “The Reckoning,” and “Ground Zero,” as well as “Call of the Machine”, a brand-new, full-length Quake II experience from MachineGames. In addition, every level from Nintendo’s classic Quake II 64 is included."
This is the best example of a classic PC game being remastered in the modern era, complete with all preiously released content, brand new content that exceeds the original in quality, and for the first time ever, an attempt to archive the production history of the game through a new feature called the 'id Vault.' This is no joke.

Special mention should be given to Brendan Mckinney (LoH Bros) who went from making a fan remake of the Quake 2 intro cinematic a year ago to being hired to work on it and the other cinematics in an official capacity for the remaster. He's moving up in the world, that's for sure.

Per Stephen Kick (Nightdive CEO), he's also working on remastering the cutscenes for another of their "top secret projects"... and something tells me that that top secret project could either be something like NOLF or Turok 3 👀

I mean... on that note; the KEX engine started as a fan hobby project to port the original DOOM engine to OpenGL and to reverse engineer / port DOOM 64 to it, simply because he wanted to play DOOM 64 on a modern machine (& fix the lighting so it was playable), and it was open sourced & publicly available. And then they got hired to sell it as the official DOOM 64 port.

@@Chozo_Ghost | I'd love it to be NOLF, but that legal knot between Disney, Activision, and WB is still in the way. Unless the new bosses at Atari have enough liquid cash to cut through it... Plus, all on NOLF's cutscenes were real-time, in-engine. They'd be upgraded alongside the gameplay.

@@themisterdellou Quake Live isn't the same experience as the original Quake III Arena. It's missing all the gore, a lot of the original maps, you need to jump through a million hoops to play the Multiplayer in its original form, and they dumbed down the A.I. quite a bit. Also, getting the original to even run on a modern system is nearly impossible for a layman, and even if you do it'll break the cinematics and even the UI if you're really unlucky.

We already have Quake Live and Quake Champions. It would be nice to let consoles in, but it would be better done with a plain old spurceport. Don't want to split the multiplayer community AGAIN.

@TacoWrath95 dude, there are plenty of modern spurceports for all the Quake's ESPECIALLY Quake 3. Quake Live is all they need to port to consoles, I dont know when you last played it but a lot of what you said is wrong. The bots are actually better than the OG Quake 3. Virtually every map is available in QL for server operators or local games.

Something I really appreciate about this remaster and the remaster of the first Quake, it's the different (and much better) treatment id software gave to his old games compared to other companies, and I'm not only talking about the remaster itself, but how they preserved all about those old games, the source code, the assets, the demos and all that stuff. It's miles away from companies like Square-Enix which lost the source code even for some of their biggest videogames like FF VII or Kingdom Hearts... This is the kind of things that tells you how a company really is. Of course, all of them are here for the money, to make big bucks and all that; but in the process, some take more care for their legacy than others, and id software have my absolute respect for that. Bringing back this game with more content, remaking or enhancing things, putting a lot of stuff giving it more value and quality, and even giving it for free to those that had the game before, it's absolutely top notch. I really really appreciate it from the bottom of my heart.

The new AI is amazing. The first time I saw a berserker leap across the room and slam me in the face I was genuinely shocked. Explosive armed Strogg also like to try and put pressure on areas you're hiding behind and most enemies now actively try to dodge your shots. It's great.

I truly hope we get either a complete remake or a new entry in the Strogg universe. Tho the chances are probably very slim. After Doom/Eternal, I highly doubt we get another sci-fi remake. I do have to agree with you here. For some reason, the more I play it, the more it makes me realize that doom eternal feels like a quake-and-doom-simultaneous-reboot thing. maybe that's why the ranger skin was included and the ancient gods released like mission packs were back in the day...hm....but I would prefer a quake focused game.

I enjoyed Doom 2016 for the most part, don't really care for Eternal but I hope they don't go down the reboot route with Quake. The purity of OG Quake is beautiful. I'm not keen on the tonal shift in the new Doom games (collecting toys etc), I'd prefer a "darker" more visceral experience.

Can't wait to play it, I loved this game on PC. Me, my dad, my sister and cousin used to play 4 player coop on computer. My dad had a 4-way LAN connected under the house, used to play all kinds of games, Doom, Quake, Diablo 2, Starcraft. I'd be running back and forth during StarCraft because you can only pause it 3 times, so me and my cousin would strategize our attacks. I still remember him almost being over run by the Zerg, him being Protoss, and I flew in with my Battlecruisers to give him cover. Also flew my Terran Command Center to his base when I got over-run once, then we figured out he could mind control one of my SCVs to have extra units.

I’ve been playing this non stop since release. This is the standard to me when it comes to remasters! Amazing job! To say I’m in retro heaven is an understatement. I wish to god a remaster of the original Unreal was done. I would lose my shit 😂

Quake 1 had a ocean of mods. Quake 2 was the upgrade. While we still played some Quake 1 stuff like Team Fortress the upgrade to Quake 2 very quickly took over and the modding for it completely eclipsed Quake 1 many times over. There is a full FTP save of GameSpy’s PlanetQuake files with all the mods they had. This isn’t every mod but it is really every good mod that made it and was played. The polish on Rocket Arena 2 and its amazing maps. Down to Quake racing lol I played using a Battle Angel Akita model back then. Played Headhunters 3 featuring the guy who would be a texture artist on Unreal Tournament. Nobody seems to cover the edge jumping and bunny hopping for breakneck speed. The Edge map is a masterpiece. Single player is not even a glimpse of what Quake 2 is as a game.
