This heavy duty locomotive was built at more than 130 units and was the Queen of Gothard for more than 50 years, pulling long and heavy freight train on the ramps of the famous tunnel.

Le Ae 6/6 sono entrate in servizio quando in Europa la trazione era, ancora, a vapore!

The dining car has its own pantograph to collect power for cooking when the car is not coupled to a locomotive. When head-end power is connected, the pan drops automatically; likewise when the car starts to move above a certain speed, power is lost, or the contact wire breaks.

From 1975 to 1981 I lived in Bern with my mother. I used to get on the train to Delemont by myself every two weeks to visit my father. It was a good time in my life. Switzerland was a very safe country for kids.

Anything with a Swiss badge demands the greatest respect. These locos are pure brilliance. Always remember having this type of loco pulling us through the Swiss section of our journey from Calais to Imst in the Tyrol in Austria in the 80s for our annual winter holiday. The pulling power was exceptionally good from what I can remember. Nice to see preserved examples. Swiss = Quality 👍😊

Marklin cod: 39365 scala 1:87 o HO Cantonal coat-of-arms for Graubünden/Grischun. Road number 11421. Fir green basic paint scheme. The locomotive looks as it currently does in 2022.

I used to love going to different towns with my grandparents on these trains. Some forms of transportation should not be completely modernized and one are these awesome trains.

Great video of a magnificent loco, thanks. I think I read somewhere that the weight and wheel arrangement caused wear problems on the track. But I'd have thought the Re6/6s (Re620) would have also been a problem.

hi buzzukfiftythree: not the weight was the problem, but the axle arrangement of 2x 3 was it. each midle axle of the 3 was not enough flexible in side adjustement, which causes a higher rail stress in curves of 300m radius at gotthard route. the points of these area has smal radiuses too - leading to more maintenance works. additionally comes the high power of each axle of nominal about 1'000 horse power. Rails and points had'nt been in line with these forces and were replaced by larger ones later.... Similar problem occurs with the Re 6/6 (typ 620), with 1.2 .. 1.3 MW / axle ( means ca. 1'700 HP / axle). Not at rails but at the wheels of the locos itselves. (= polygonale Laufflächen-Verformung). Problem was solved by an improved wheel construction, as far as i know.

hi Cov1327. Simple, same manufacturer BBC and SLM of Ae 6/6 and DA of Romania. Ae 6/6 was released as protoype in 1952/1953, while DA was built from 1959/ 1960. But internally both locos were completely different. Ae 6/6 was fully electric, DA was a Diesel engine. (wikipedia gives more infos....)
