So the fact that European monarchs typically have executive authority isn't really a big deal. They don't use it at their own discretion. A democratically legitimate minister always advises them. In some monarchies even, the monarch wields no executive authority at all. The citizens in European monarchies aren't subject to the whims of the monarch either, monarchs have no political autonomy in modern times.
