Hey!! So a while ago, we had a poll on Patreon to see which show would replace Bly Manor and Black Mirror and even though it took us a long time to get here, we did not forget Queen's Gambit ;) We've been wanting to see this show for a while and the first episode introduced us to a genius main character with a bright mind and tons of issues D: Hopefully you're with us on this journey to see her through success!

One of the best series I've ever watched. With one of the best female leads I've ever witnessed. Maybe even the greatest. 😤

Great analysis. Being genius has cost. Pressure, stress, not being to socialize normally, not being able to grow up normally. However, it makes her life interesting! Look forward to your analysis in episode 2!👍

I just realized schiebel said now or never to Beth, and she said the same to beltik when he kissed her. She learned a lot from scheiebel

Beth may or may not be on the autism spectrum. At any rate, it is evident that she is highly intelligent and observant, which would set her apart from both the other orphans and the orphanage staff (which are...not so perceptive), but at least as Isla Johnston portrayed her, she is closed and taciturn. She hides her feelings by not being highly verbal, with a monotone voice and little facial expression. This would further her isolation. However, sometimes her feelings do peep through. I especially enjoyed the quirk of the lip that showed when she figured out the Scholar's Mate, and the (clearly fake) smile and thank you to Mr. Ganz for the doll. Later on, as Anya Taylor-Joy portrays her, she becomes somewhat more expressive.

Ritalin isn’t a tranquilizer. For most people it’s an amphetamine.

They used to give us Ritalin in the 90's to make us more attentive. Which gave the school better scores. Teachers were told that any child being even slightly distracted in class should bring it up with their parents to get them on it. We all grew up and now everyone wonders why drugs are such a big issue in the 2020's. The same is being done today with Adderall. But people say "OH no it's not the same at all! It HELPS kids not us..." And they still benefit from it by showing they can teach kids better on their test scores. Adderall has been proven to burn out the brain faster and is expected to cause a massive spike in Alzheimer's disease when they age up.

Excellent reaction! I've seen a few, and it's amazing to me how few people recognize a suicide, or what the drugs or their lack do to her. @GoonyGoogles has a good one, though, and others show a perspective that I wouldn't normally consider, Ralphie Reacts for example. It's based on the 1983 book by Walter Tevis and is as much about addiction as chess. He was a Professor of english literature, a class C chess player, and was himself an addict.

@@kyuujinreacts I just find it funny how defensive you feminist types get over the smallest of things
@kyuujinreacts
@kyuujinreacts 3 жыл бұрын
We don't identify as "feminists". At least not in the way you assume. But not recognizing that there was (and to an extent, there still is) a huge difference in how women were treated compared to men and how sexist mentalities and laws could be is called being stupidly blind. I find it funny how offended you got by the simple comment that women could play chess if they wanted to
@davefred
@davefred 3 жыл бұрын
@@kyuujinreacts You sure about that? Because right now you're sounding a lot like one. The guy didn't even say "girls can't play chess". He said "girls don't play chess", which was pretty typical for how things worked back in the day. Men had their roles, women had theirs. It had nothing to do with sexism. But the fact that one of you just had to say something in response is, again, laughable.
@kyuujinreacts
@kyuujinreacts 3 жыл бұрын
Go believe what you want I guess 🙄 girls don't play chess because back then that's how things worked is exactly the way of thinking that led to there being sexism in society. It's not right today, and it wasn't right then either. As for being feminists, if you mean being able to acknowledge that women stand and should have always stood on equal grounds with men, then yeah, I guess we are. But then imo everyone should be. We won't discriminate against men so women can get it all, but putting down women for acknowledging how wrong things were for them then and how wrong some things still are for them today is being plain misogynistic
