Tributes to the Queen, who died yesterday aged 96 after 70 years on the throne, will be led today in the House of Commons by Liz Truss as the country enters an extended period of national mourning. Her eldest son has become King Charles III.
Gun salutes and church bells will ring out across the country today as crowds gather again outside Buckingham Palace, where the Union Jack was lowered to half-mast last night.

I'm not one for emotion or even opinion about most "celebrity" news - it was a moment of surprise and a tinge of sadness at the news of Diana's death which quickly passed, only to be replaced by total bemusement if not outright bewilderment, at the mawkish outpouring of grief which bordered on the kitsch. The passing of the Queen, however, is a different matter altogether. I shall be 53 tomorrow which time alone has witnessed incredible change. Astonishing to try to imagine that the Queen had already reigned for 17 years before my birth and been alive for a quarter of a century before that. Moreover, to have to navigate those changes of which it is inconceivable The Queen universally approved, yet keeping schtum and quietly just doing exactly what she was there for, representing Britain and it's people, whatever your colour, creed or station - and for 70 years pretty much two entire working lives of most people - deserves huge respect. Requiescat in pace.....

Quite an amazing life, from WW2 through the cold war, and the post colonial world, she handled it admirably.
