@@TetraDax Yeah, not many people I've talked to have made that connection. Elizabeth got so upset because it was a reminder of her talk with Queen Mary when she had to kill a piece of herself, her voice, in service to the Crown. And it's in this scene, that Charles comes to the realization that he too must do the same.

Love this scene. The Queen is correct in that both are privileged and self-absorbed to the point that they cannot see past their own suffering in the name of duty and “the crown”. In the earlier seasons, we saw the many struggles and sacrifices of Elizabeth and Phillip that allowed their marriage to persevere. The Queen believes that because they toughed it out, so can Charles. And to some extent, Charles could’ve tried harder; it seems he barely did. That being said, he is not Phillip and Diana not Elizabeth. It’s all a fundamental misunderstanding and misalignment of values. Kind of like how Phillip thought the boarding school would help Charles become stronger and more of a “man” like it made him, but it just beat his son down and weakened him further.

I'm so glad she told him off! He said he's tried his "best" but did nothing but continuously chase after Camilla and degrade Diana whenever he had the chance. Then, he also accuses her of being a terrible wife for doing the things that he himself is doing exactly. He took no opportunity to actually try to understand her, and even if he couldn't, instead of appreciating what Diana was trying to do for him, he talked shit about her to both Camilla and his sister. Regardless if Camilla stayed in the picture or not, it's very clear that in at least this version of their lives, Charles's true love is himself. He wants a wife that showers him in praise and let's him shine in the spot light, not the other way around.

In the context of the show (since we'll never know the whole truth about both marriages), Elizabeth is perfectly able to understand Charles' point of view about struggling in a marriage. But where she tried and tried over again, and where Philip and her found a way to work through their differences, she sees two whiny babies not making the effort to do the same. Two whiny babies who will inherit her throne one day. Of course she's reacting this way and it all makes sense, and to me, the storylines that the show shows are perfectly chosen. Elizabeth and Philip's struggles in their marriages serve to feed this storyline as well and to understand the Queen's point of view of it as well. Now, we've also seen Diana make efforts to meet Charles halfway where he's never done the same, and that's where reality sinks in. As much as I can understand Charles wanting to stand up for himself and keeping his love for Camilla as a constant in his life through and through, it came at several costs, and the show shows that particularly. There is nothing wrong with being selfish, especially with your own heart. But selfish to the point of hurting others is where the problem starts. As I see it on the show at least, Camilla is selfish too, but she's never selfish to the point of hurting her husband or her family. She's never selfish to the point of asking anything of Charles. And that's where Charles does not make a suitable King, because yes, in this matter, he put his own selfish wants over the common good, not only of the country and the family's name, but his duty as a King too. It's really just like Philip, how he almost destroyed his own marriage by "not bending" (as the Queen mother said). But he did, in the end, because he understood. The season ends with Diana understanding too, but we all know Charles will never understand.

Why should he have tried so hard with someone he never wanted to marry to begin with? He deserved to marry who he loved, just like everyone else. I asked all please read this to the end, and understand I’m going by the series version of events. With regards to Charles I don’t have sympathy for her. Yes Charles is his own man and he hast to take responsibility for his shortcomings. But some of this chaos could’ve been avoided if she had treated him as a son first and the Prince of Wales second. The reprimand she gave him for his speech and Wales was 100% uncalled for. And I personally feel she did it because she was partially jealous that he had the guts to do it. When you compare the speech he made at Wales to the speech she gave in the subsequent episode in France, really what he said was not that bad, and by no means a controversy. It was like she was obsessed with making him her carbon copy rather than respect that he had to figure out what kind of king he was going to be for himself. She also should’ve just left well enough alone Especially when he started dating Camila. If they were all convinced that it was going nowhere with Camilla then they should’ve just let the drama play out. That wouldn’t have been 2/3 the disaster of pushing him into a loveless marriage where he made the Earl of Snowdon look like a flowering Virgin. In season three it felt like she had become so committed to duty and image that she forgot the most important thing about parenting. You need to give your children the freedom to make mistakes, for how else can they learn to navigate the waters of adulthood. Now Charles loses my sympathy when he becomes a cheating husband, and I agreed with a lot of what the queen said except What she said when he (Charles) said he wanted to divorce. Charles and Diana were both grotesquely unhappy and it was a cruelty to force them to stay together. And after What happened with Princess Margaret the royal elders should’ve known better. OK rant over.

The queen said exactly my sentiments about Charles’ behavior towards Diana. If he expects to be King, he must be ready to do the hardwork. That saying with full awareness that marrying someone you don’t genuinely love is painful, but I guess it comes with the territory. The queen’s apathy towards their marital problems mirrors her attitude towards the monarchy-duty above all. Perhaps, Charles has forgotten about this and frankly was being kind of selfish, and self-indulgent. Absolutely love this series! I profoundly disagree. Sure, having money is useful, but once you have enough money to be financially secure (i.e. are able to meet your needs and have the freedom to make choices as to what to do with your life) more on top of that doesn't really increase your quality of life. Many people inherit that level of wealth _without_ the level the lifetime of public pressure and scrutiny the royals live under, or having to be married to somebody they do not like. And sure, the royals aren't in danger of being assassinated (although it's still a possibility as it is for any public figure, like what happened to Kennedy and John Lennon)...but is that really the bar?!?! 'You aren't dead, so smile?' Given a choice between being a royal and just being comfortably well-off, I would choose the latter.

@lordalessan
@lordalessan 3 жыл бұрын
The Queen knows exactly what she is talking about here, even if it's fiction. Her grandmother was in love with King George's brother, who died and so she married George. Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip experienced marriage difficulties themselves and worked together to move away from those issues and thrive in their marriage. His great great grandfather Edward VII, whom he saw himself in because of his affair with Camilla's great grandmother, took many mistresses but respected Alexandria, even if he didn't love her. He kept her away from the scrutiny of his mother Queen Victoria, they threw parties and rode together and he gave her so much credit for taking on public duties, unlike Charles who was jealous of Diana. Entering reality, Charles refused to meet Diana halfway and never gave up Camilla. A good king would learn to make sacrifices for the Crown. If that's not fair, he should've been wise enough to know that Camilla loved Andrew, otherwise she would've given Andrew up and said that to him. Remember what Camilla said, she only went to Charles now that Andrew doesn't need her. He refused to see Diana for the talented women and brilliant mother that she was, didn't learn to love her. He has Camilla now, but at what cost? More than half of the public will always remind him of Diana; the terrible ones will troll him forever. This show will make the new generation aware of what he did, some will feed into the dramatization of his life and hate him even more. Even as king, not everyone will love or accept him. It's sad because Prince Harry himself once said no royal wants to be king or queen. However, because of his father's mistakes, William and Kate may be faced with great responsibilities sooner than they think due to public demand.

He’s had a tremendous amount of growth, and The Queen has spent the last 30 years showing him what a Sovereign needs to be. Despite his previous indiscretions he’ll be a good King, although not nearly as good a Monarch as The Queen has been. He’ll have a relatively short reign and The Crown will pass to The Duke of Cambridge who will be an excellent King, and so on. That's the difference between Elizabeth and Charles: Elizabeth understood her duty and her role, and she managed to put aside her self-interest in service of the crown. Even to a fault. That same duty also meant she turned out a terrible mother. Charles, on the other hand, has absolutely no sense of duty or self-sacrifice. All he ever thinks about is his ideal fantasy world, and he acts like an angsty spoiled brat when he gets anything less than that. He has no concept of responsibility. He thinks the world should bend to meet his needs. And even though Elizabeth may have been a terrible mother, I shudder to think of what Charles will be like if he ever becomes king. Let's hope he goes before his mom so the crown can pass to William. EDIT: Dang, this comment aged well, didn't it?

The war was their death knell. In 1947 they lost Palestine and India. With the Suez crisis of 1956 they lost Egypt as a puppet state and control of oil shipments. In 1960 they would lose the congo. And as far as largest economy that doesn't mean much. Gdp per capita is a much better metric. When china equals the US that still means the US makes three to four dollars more per person. He emotionally abused her and verbally tortured her. There are many men who don't love and/or stop loving their wives but with the vast majority of blokes in this situation, there will always be a vestige of affection and care towards her because she is still the mother of your children. But Charles is such a bastard, he wouldn't even treat her with any level of respect. When she raises the topic of their children as a potential common bond or at the very least the basis for a minimum mutual respect, he viciously dismisses that as a reason to treat her with any kindness. Not only is he callous and spiteful towards her, he is so petty and destructive that he is more than willing to tear her down in front of others. He implied in front of both their staffs that she was so psychologically unfit and damaged that she wouldn't be able to carry out her duties leaving her wracked with self doubt, a crippling lack of self confidence and huge anxiety attacks. Afterwards, when her solo trip was a success & she seeks validation and a bit of praise for not letting the institution of the monarchy, i.e., his family, down & upholding its reputation despite concerns over her ability & mental state before she left, he lashes out at her because he feels resentment and envy over her popularity with the public. 1:01 And here we get a reminder that "The Crown" is more narrative drama than documentary. "They know that you betray your wife and make no attempts to hide it. They know that thanks to you, she has psychological problems, and eats or doesn’t eat or whatever it is she does or doesn’t do." I'll bet money that Queen Elizabeth, sick and tired of hearing about Charles and Diana's marital problems, DID actually scold him at some point around this era. I'll bet she chided him for being spoiled, privileged, and complaining. Yet, I have serious doubts she actually called out his adultery or his gaslighting. For as much progressive change as has occurred during Elizabeth's reign, remember that she is a conservative woman raised during a conservative era where women were told to excuse men's "dalliances." Even more so, she was brought up in a time where mental health issues were seen as personal weaknesses, not traumas inflicted by others. While I buy the latter comments made in this monologue, these first two sentences are made up to play to the attitudes of a 21st century audience desperate to hear the condemnation of 20th century toxic norms. An audience self-inserted smack down that seems almost like an anachronism in this context.
@hazelcornell4311
@hazelcornell4311 2 жыл бұрын
In that same conservative era though, for the "dalliances" to be so widely known was considered shameful. One was expected to be discreet so as to avoid scandal. Charles's lack of discretion was bringing shame upon the House of Windsor, and even the oldschool attitudes would have been disgusted and angry with him for that.
