Herein is written the records of the Reclamation of Khazad-dûm 2980 TA Balin, Son of Fundin, heir to Moria has finally gathered enough support to lead a quest to reclaim our long-lost halls. A host far greater then the fourteen that retook the Lonely Mountain has gathered from Erebor and the Iron Hills, numbering 1478, plus a small unit of 75 human cavalry from the Dale led by Brand, Son of Bern, who have joined us on our quest in search of adventure and glory. While some grumbled at their inclusion into this excursion for the dwarves people, Balin spoke very fondly of another non-dwarf who helped retake Erebor due to his courage and cleverness, and thus they were allowed to stay. Balin has decided to retrace the path he took to Erebor decades ago through the Forest Road of Mirkwood, despite some misgivings that the southern forest had gotten perhaps even wilder and more perilous then before. Nearly from the outset we were beset; a roving band of archers ambushed us almost as soon as we reached forest's edge. The raiders were human, but cloaked all in black and seemed to be awaiting to ambush us. Balin showed great foresight in bringing the Barding cavalry, as Brand fought bravely and disrupted their formations, allowing us to close and slay. We never found out whom they served or where they came from. We have been noticed by the Woodland Realm. Thandruil has sent two units of archers numbering just above 200 to "escort" is through Mirkwood, much to the suspicion of Balin, who remembers his treatment at the hands of the Woodland King on the quest to reclaim Erebor. No sooner had they joined, a huge host of orcs seemed to spring from the woods and beset us in great numbers. Quick action by both the elves and Brand of the Bardings helped buy us time to rally, and the humans paid a high price in lives for their courage. We drove the host off, but many now grumble that the elves were what brought the attention of such a host, for who else but they could have? Still, they stay close, shadowing our camp. We have come to the elven settlement of Eryn Dholen, where we have been allowed to stay near to resupply, but not allowed inside it's underground walls. This further made Balin suspicious of Thandruil's motives. Two days out from Eryn Dholen, our rearguard scouts have seen an orcish host even greater then the one before come to assault the elf-home. First we wondered since when so many orcs had populated Southern Mirkwood, as it was reputed that the Necromancer had been driven from Dol Guldur years ago, but quickly it became a more pressing question; should we help the elves or not? Brand of the Barding folk suggested that we at least honor the food, supplies, and archers we were lent by coming to their aid, but Balin refused this advice and said; "When I first passed through Thandruil's realm he locked me up in a dungeon for failing to speak my business. I will not sink so low and will do something kinder then he did; nothing." The next morning the elven archers who followed us were nowhere to be found, and we continued our march west. 2981 TA We were beset again this morning, this time by a menace scarcely seen this side of the Misty Mountains; trolls. They smashed into our lines and caused horrendous casualties, but once again Brand's mercenary cavalry showed incredible valor and fought them rather then flee, again at great loss of life. By battle's end his numbers were more then half gone, but we were victorious. Brand showed no joy though, saying that "the battle might have been easier fought, had we more archers". Balin glowered at him but said no response, and nobody spoke aloud of the elves who had left us. We are finally free of Mirkwood's clutches, the trees breaking into the light of the Vale of Anduin and the land of the Beorning Clansman. Before we had left the forest were were yet again beset by and orc raiding party, as if they were reluctant to less us get any closer to our destination and escape their grasp. Outside the village of Seleburg we rested and re-supplied, telling the suspicious Beorning folk of our quest even as we paid their tolls. Once hearing it however, we found we had gained yet more support; the Beornings sent mercenary axemen and unit of cavalry in support of us, citing a hatred of the orcs we would most certainly slay on the way to reclaiming our home as reason enough. In happier news, Balin has found a wife in Fenja, who traveled with us in support of our quest. 2982 TA As we neared the Misty Mountains we have once again encountered orcs, this time from our true foe. Meeting them at the entrance to the Azanulbizar (called the Dimrill Dale by Men), we fell upon them with a fury not seen by their vile folk since the War. Balin himself led the charge, falling upon them with fell axe and grim visage, crying oaths to friends and kin slain during that bloody conflict long ago. They stood no chance against out fury, nor his. We now take shelter in an old fasthold in Azanzulbizar, built by our kinsman long ago. Ahead of us is the Eastern Gate of Khazad-dûm, and glory. -From The Book of Mazarbul, penned by Ori

Hey TheBType, really great work! I had written something too, but from the perspective of a soldier in Balin's ranks. Wanna collaborate so we keep the same storyline but from 2 diff perspectives?
@TheBType7 жыл бұрын
Sure. The perspective used here is a very broad one; it's supposed to be the official record, and the Book of Mazarbul is the book that the Fellowship finds in Moria that retells the dark fate of the Balin's expedition, though hopefully this one doesn't end as bad! I wasn't going to name much in the way of individual soldiers, only leaders and the occasional "Captain" because official records of that sort tend to take a bird's eye view, so you can write pretty much anything you want I should think!
@caffeinatedsurvivor17487 жыл бұрын
cool cool. I actually had named the captain of the dalians something different, but I've got that figured out, so dont go changing ur story. Other than that, yeah I think ur right

I really disagree it would have been stupid to lose full units which I would have done as that orc stack was very strong and would have broken my weaker units. Yes i would have been healed if I had won but only to units that survived. The Orcs will be punished for their attack on the elves but far better for my army to make it to Moria whole and as fast as possible. This is one of many ways to start a dwarf campaign and don't forget dwarfs aren't exactly best friends with elves ;) We shall see whether this decision has any ramifications at all later on in the campaign but our relations are already recovered all that remains is whether that settlement the orcs took will be of any benefit to them.
@lionheartx107 жыл бұрын
Not ignorance i knew there would be benefits for staying and fighting however that would risk a lot of my army as the healing only works on units that survived the battle, better to get to the safety of Moria's halls I feel ;)
@ttlpwn347 жыл бұрын
Lionheart, remember that unit movement is pretty derpy in this game compared to warhammer. Cav need a good 100 meters to get a proper charge and infantry units have a hard time moving properly on rough terrain. Keep in mind that for maps like Moria, you wont get very good charges and will have to rely on the endurance of your units, which is good because you're playing as hardy dwarves :)

I have calculated that a combined total of approximately 2000 warriors have taken part in your expedition to Moria. 1478 Dwarves of The Lonely Mountain and The Iron Hills. 75 Men of Dale. 230 Wood Elves of Mirkwood. 259 Beornings. That's an impressive expeditionary force.

I'm not bragging or anything, but I really didn't find that battle difficult. I made it with all my units. All you need to do is flank their units right after they engage, without worrying about counter flanking. The AI is smart about flanking, but they won't anticipate a counter-counter-flanking. i don't know if you understood tht, ok bye i'll leave

Hello all, decided to start writing something for this series, longtime subscriber of LH, wanted to work on my writing and contribute to the series. I'm not confident in my LOTR lore, so if I say something that would be completely heretical or just dumb, feel free to reply and tell me so. I may not fit everything that happened in this party (there was a lot to write about), but I will be sure to catch up the timeline within a few episodes. Anyway, hope you enjoy! "Blain! Blain! Come here!" A full bearded figure burst into the taproom. I looked up from my mug of ale with a definite air of reluctance and greeted my cousin. "Bloin." We clasped forearms. "What brings you to visit?" "Have you not heard? There's an expedition for Moria! Aren't you going to come?" I had heard. Balin was something of a legend in Erebor, and of course I had seen the notices. However, I ignored them, preferring a life of metal and ale to a life of adventure. "You are?" I asked. All in all, I wasn't surprised Bloin had come from his home further north. He had always been the one to want to go outside. He once, on a dare, jumped into Lake Esgaroth, just to prove he could. "Wouldn't miss it for the world." He exclaimed, signalling to the barkeep for a mug of ale for himself. "Moria!" He looked off in the distance. "The amount of gold in that hold..." "The amount of Goblins in that hold..." I interrupted dryly. "So you're not coming?" Bloin looked at me. "I can't believe it." "Don't start this..." I began. "You always talked about how you would love to see the misty mountains back into their rightful hands..." "That was when I was little." I protested. "I barely even had a beard!" "This is the first step." He whispered passionately, gripping my shoulder. "Please. Come with me?" I kept silent, hoping Bloin would give up. I should have known better. "Fine!" I said. "Let me grab my Axe." We made our way to the square, where the white-bearded Highlord Balin and his friend Ori had set up a table. Immediately, I was taken by Balin's forwardness. "Come, you two!" He called, before Bloin had even a chance. "You seem like a pair of adventurers, don't you think Ori?" "Most certainly." He replied, not looking up from his scroll. "We are." Bloin confirmed. "I'm Bloin, son of Doin, and this is my cousin Blain, son of Glain." Balin clasped forearms with both of us. "Ori, write their names down." "Already done." Ori called, having yet to look up from his scroll. "Good, good." Balin said around a laugh. "Come, join our ranks." Within a week, our company (now consisting of over a thousand Dwarves) marched out to Laketown, where we waited while Balin, Ori, and other leaders decided on the particulars of our quest. Rumor flew around that Gandalf himself had come to provide counsel, which, while highly unlikely, did provide some comfort. If a man with those sorts of brains was helping lead the quest, I was confident we were in good hands. A few days into the council, a troop of horse riders came to Highlord Balin's house. "Balin!" The man at the point of the column shouted in the common tongue from his horse. "I want to talk to you!" A crowd of Men and Dwarves alike began to appear as Balin emerged, and Bloin and I had pushed ourselves to the front of it. "Highlord Balin." Balin corrected him icily as he walked out of the door. "What have you to say, stranger?" "I am Farndorn, a Man of Dale for generations." At his name, a murmur passed through the Human section of the crowd. "And with the proper convincing, me and my company would be willing to fight with you in your quest for Moria." Balin raised an eyebrow. "What kind of convincing do you prefer?" A rider on the side of the column muttered a phrase in Dalian. "Gold, you idiot." He must not have realized we were Dwarves of Erebor. Bloin, myself and a few others surged forward. "What was that, Beardless!" Bloin shouted. The man turned in his saddle, and began to lower his spear. "Silence!" Balin raised an arm, and immediately it became quiet enough that we could hear the birds chirping overhead. "Come inside." Balin ordered Farndorn. "We will talk of these things in private." By some miracle, Farndorn must have ingratiated himself with Highlord Balin enough for Balin to accept his mercenary help. At least that's what Bloin thought. Personally, I silently wondered how desperate Balin was of soldiers. I learned the name of the mercenary that so destabilised the relations between us and the Dalian horsemen: Daradin. "I don't like them." Bloin told me one night, about the mercenaries. "You're not alone." I pointed out. "The whole company knows what Daradin said about Highlord Balin." We set out, into Mirkwood. Almost immediately we were ambushed by two units of Orcish archers, who set out and shot a few dozen of our own archers in the space of a few moments. The Dale horses, weak as they were, reared up when they came close, and proved to do absolutely nothing in the skirmish. Nevertheless, good Dwarven steel proved its worth, making short work of the Mirkwood scum. We lost a total of around 3 score men in the short encounter. As we marched through Mirkwood, a party of Elven archers intercepted us, and were quickly hurried into Balin's tent. After they came out, Balin warned us all of an impending attack of a massive horde of Mirkwood soldiers that the Elves had warned us of. "Do not fear!" He urged. "Thousands will fall before our axes before our will breaks! Remember, Moria is our Destiny!" As promised, the attackers were a verifiable horde, their ranks spread further than my eyes could see, and I had some of the younger eyes of the company. Even the Elven companies behind us couldn't shoot the Orcs at the furthest end of their battle line. From the shield wall, I could see the packs of the Orcs attacking each flank, but none dared attack our center. "The cowards!" Bloin shouted. "They won't attack our front! Let's take the fight to them!" A great Dwarven cheer rose up, and, following my cousin's lead, we pivoted out towards each flank, enveloping the Orcs. We lost nearly two hundred in that battle. After the battle, we camped outside Eryn Dholen, the town the Elves had come from. Grateful for their help but not wishing to impose, Balin had us camp just to the East of the town. That night, Ori, the scribe, approached me. "Blain, is it?" He said. "Yes." I affirmed, standing and clasping his forearm. "What brings you to my tent, Scribe Ori?" "What think you of the Elven town?" He asked, ignoring my question. I paused. "They did warn us of the approaching army..." "True, true." He sat down, and gestured that I sit next to him. "The also were absent at the Council in Laketown." "They were?" I asked. He nodded. "Not to mention an armed force left Eryn Dholen to the Southwest, and refused to reveal to us their destination." I pursed my lips. "No matter." Ori shrugged, dusting off his legs and standing up. "They won't be our problem soon enough." "What?" I asked, standing up. "What do you mean, Ori?" But he just walked away. The next morning, Highlord Balin announced that Eryn Dholen had been besieged by a force of Mirkwood, and we were marching away. "But they lended us help!" Farndorn, the mercenary captain protested. "Surely we cannot turn our backs to them in their time of need." Balin turned a raised eyebrow in his direction. "Our objective is cleansing Moria of Orc filth, not the forest of Mirkwood. If your duty calls you to defend them so badly, you are free to leave. Us Dwarves are moving forward to Moria." The Elven companies, naturally, took that offer, going to retake their homeland Even Bloin, in his intense loyalty to Balin, disliked this proposition. "The Elves killed hundreds with their bows in the last battle, and we're leaving?" The entire day, while marching, I was reminded of Ori's words the previous night. 'They won't be our problem soon enough', he had said. Could he have known? A few hours after high noon, we were attacked yet again. "What in the name of Mahal are those beasts?" Bloin exclaimed, standing to my left in the shield wall. I peered over my shield, then swore. "Trolls." The beasts ripped through our shield wall like an auger through molten steel. The shield wall devolved into a chaotic melee, with no order but kill and try to stay alive. Finally, the Dalian riders proved useful, charging through the mix and dropping many of the beasts by their spears. Many a friend fell that day, the final number reaching 2 hundreds, three score, and 5 besides. Nevertheless, after slaying the last of the foul beasts, we continued marching, and by the end of the month, we emerged from the forest and into the clear. We were out of Mirkwood.

Dwarfs have the best autoresolve in this mod, it can actually be very good, especially if you have a general with a lot of command. I have seen odds of 1:2 against me as a dwarf and crushing the enemy with autoresolve. If you ah fought the battle to assist the elves your units would all be replenished to full strength and the woodland realm would not have been weaker. You couldn't have known that but you decided wrongly and the woodland realm will have it harder now to help you and you might need to attack DOl Guldur sooner than you like to not loose the Vale of the Anduin too fast. The difficulty is until you have a good base at Moria, sorted you the money situation and have the recruitment capabilities, normally as soon as you have Zagh Kala and defeated the Balrog you should have "won". Build mines as fast as posssible, you need the money as a first step.

I know this is six years old at this point but I also don't know if anyone told you what happens if you join the defence of the elven town. Pretty much what happened for me was I showed up in the back of the town walls as the orcs were attacking the front and the AI know I was there and dropped eveything to attack me running past every tower that dropped most of them before they got to me and the AI had them sprite or something cause when they got to me they were tried and easy pickings for my archers and the town defenders. After the battle the event gave me a full resote of all my troops. I had a unit that had three guys left after a bad incounter went back up to 120. So I found that event to be quite fun and rewording. I also had more mercs then you did so that problay helped make my chose to fight to, so each there own.

If you charge hard and then immediately tell your unit to move through you can shatter the unit pretty fast and then come back from the other way.

Wish CA will ever (maybe again, once upon a time?) have the love and passion and imagination with what those mods are made. Thinking on buying the game just to play those mods

Also it takes forever for your fortress to produce units once you get there so you can't afford to hold onto territory due to attrition until you get professional soldiers

Trolls, karma for not helping the elves. Dwarves or not, there's honor to think of!

I love how this got nearly as much views as a Warhammer: Total War campaign first episode, even though the game is over 10 years old and it's a mod made by fans... CA is so blind for the potential a LOTR:TW has.

Wow massive amount of likes in a really short time. Testament to the popularity of the Lord of the Rings I guess. I wonder if that indicator would translate into similar sales if CA made Total War: Lord of the Rings? This was the first faction I played in DaC mod :) Mainly because I felt sorry for Balin after his failed attempt to reclaim Moria. I like "what if" scenarios :) Onward Lionheart! :D

Hey Lionhearth! When I play warhammer (total war) I can NEVER win with dwarfs on legendary. Even if I win every battle with ods 1 to 3 I just get swarmed. What about a litle chalange? *Give it your best shot(s)!* I would realy want to know (And see :3) if I am the only one hiting a 783 Feet thick Concrete wall or if it's just me having such bad luck. (I use 2 mod colections: Radious & Olympian Campaigne Camera) I realy hope you want to give it a shot! I already gave up after my 11th attempt... xD (Loading screens take 3-4 minutes on my pc, so yea. It gets a bit iritating after having to restart your game or enter and exit a battle constantly (becaus autoresolve wil be an army wipe for sure)) Have a nice day! (And love the vid btw ^^ The dwarfs are back!!!)
@draconianwarking7 жыл бұрын
try normal or easy first so your units won't lose on a one on one fight and killing dwarfs is very straightforward: get through their armour with heavy weapons, guns and monsters... that means that you will have to counter these things, use artillery on monsters and infantry to hold the line so your guns can shoot their monsters, slayers are only good enough to kill one giant per unit to keep their numbers low and hammer infantry is ONLY useful if you have a large shield infantry force to hold them in place else just go for artillery and sheilds unless you are going against other dwarfs keep trying stuff like fighting against dwarfs in custom battles and finding what works then switching to dwarfs and finding what counters that
@MsRidk7 жыл бұрын
Will do! Thank you for the tips ^^ I will come back to you when I have got some statistics. xD

The world was young, the mountains green, no stain yet on the moon was seen. No name was set on stream of stone, when dúrin woke and walked alone! He named the nameless hills and delves! He drank from yet untasted wells! He stooped and looked in mirrormere, and saw a crown of stars appear! As gems upon a silver thread, above the shadows of his head! The world was fair, the mountains tall, in eldar days before the fall, of mighty king in Nargothrond, and Gondolin who now beyond, the western seas have passed away! the world was fair in Dúrin's day! A king he was on carven throne! In many pillared hulls of stone! With golden roof and silver floor! And runes of power upon the door! The light of sun and star and moon, in shining lamps of crystal hewn! Undimmed by cloud or shade of night, there shone forever fair and bright! The hammer on the anvil smote, there chisel clove, and graver wrote; forged was blade and bound was hilt! The delves mined, the mason built! There beryl, pearl and opal pale, and metal wrought like fishes' mail! Buckler and corslet, axe and sword, and shining spear were laid in hoard! Unwearied then were Dúrin's folk; beneath the mountains music woke: the harpers harped, the minstrel sang, and at the gates the trumpets rang! The world is grey, the mountains old, the forges fire lays ashen-cold. No harp is rung, no hammer falls, the darkness dwells in Dúrin's halls! The shadows lies upon his tomb! in Moria, in Karzad-dûm. But still the sunken stars appear, in dark and windless Mirrormere! There lies his crown in waters deep, till Dúrin wakes again from sleep!

I've tried this campaign twice with the latest version of divide and conquer. The first time, every time I ended turn at around turn 65 the game would crash. I started the campaign again from the beginning. The second time I wasn't given an option to build weaponsmiths in my settlements which was pretty annoying but I carried on playing anyway. Then after crowning Balin at around turn 55 the Balrog attacked and my game crashed everytime it started loading the battle. So frustrating!!!
