I shouldn't have watched this ep before going to sleep at basically 2 am bc after all this linguistics/philology info dump I'm fully awake again 🙂🙂🙂 I Loved it!!! Would you guys make an ep comparing the characteristics of language and music? (Rhythm, intonation etc) idk if you'll see this comment bc it's an old ep but 🤷🏽♀️ #HDIGH

Jae's mind + Jae's face = How did I get here! The rhetorical question mark was invented by Mark Denham in the 1580s and it that time it was called percontatation point. It was used at the end of a rhetorical sentence or question. However it became a bit unpopular in the 1700s. by Quora. :D

Linguistics student here! Daiane is right about the question lilt! It's actually a very basic animal sound that just never lost it's relevance in human languages cuz, it's simple and we kinda just inherently understand it I guess? Alot of social animal also understand that lilt because they use it too! If your dog or cat or even chimps are confused they would most likely make a variant of the "huh?" Sound. Confusion is one of the most easily communicated emotions in any language

Yeah, in Korean, when i see the subs, many times it’ll say there’s a question being asked, but nothing in the speaker’s tone sounds like they’re asking a question at all. Most of the time anyway. It’s strange, but interesting 😂 This punctuation thing is what makes Korean so hard: they don’t seem to use half the punctuation we do and there’s no capital letters, AND so many of the words sound the same, but mean totally different things (tea/car/right or ok, snow/eye, etc)…
