This is part three of the Highwall Remodel series. In this video we give vinyl contact paper a shot as a method for renovating and remodeling our 2008 Jayco Select 12HW’s countertops. We made sure we purchased vinyl contact paper specifically made for going on countertops, which is much thicker than your run of the mill contact paper. Specifically, we picked up a gray marble look vinyl contact paper made by Very Berry. One of the advantaged of the vinyl contact paper that is made for going on countertops is that it can be stretched with the application of heat.
For this part of the renovation, we actually required very few tools and supplies. In addition to the vinyl contact paper, we utilized a degreaser and an alcohol based cleaner to clean our table and countertops. We also utilized a scissors, a utility blade, a heat gun, different sized plastic scrapers, a caulk gun, and latex caulk to finish up the look.
We found that this method of renovating countertops is most certainly the quickest of the methods we’ve tried as it doesn’t require allowing paint to dry or completely remaking countertops. However, this method certainly wasn’t frustration free as air bubbles liked to work their way under the vinyl contact paper. In our opinion, this is at least a two person job - one to hold the contact paper off the countertop/table and to apply heat while the other squeegees the vinyl contact paper down onto the existing countertops.
With all that being said, the one thing we did not mention in the video that we wished we had done was allow the corners that we utilized the heat and pull method to cool prior to trimming the excess material.

We were out camping this weekend for Labor Day and I was thinking that you should encourage viewers to send in photos to feature in one of your videos. Might be a good source of inspiration for others in doing these sorts of projects and give someone on the fence the confidence to get a PUP of their own! Y'all are awesome!

Did this exact same thing to our pop up counter tops. Loved the way it came out, definitely was not stress free lol , we also didn’t have T-channels on our counter tops so we had no choice but to do the wrap over the edge. There are a few edges that have lifted and a little bit of damage to the marble material. We didn’t utilize the heat gun as much as you did but I thing if we were to redo the tops we’ll use the heat gun more or I’m just going to do completely custom hard wood counter tops. Great job though!

Liked the look of the contact paper covering. Also liked the look of the stretched corner, vs. cut corner. Please advise in the future how serviceable the covering is. We might decide to do the same in the future. Our Rockwood HW is the last popup we will own so we will continue to repair, and refurb as required. We Love our unit, it is comfortable, and as you are showing through your vids, it is uniquely ours. We so enjoy your instructional vids, and great perspective for all things popup. Please keep it up as long as it brings you Joy, and Satisfaction. As we have enjoyed each other's company for 44 years, we wish the same for you, and your lovely Wife. Bless our popup Family. Thanks

Hi I watch you a lot Thank you for your videos I've learned a lot from you..I have used that marble tack paper on my camper popup truck..and my travel trailer countertop kitchen and bathroom...It works great Only thing is I found that it does not stick well when you put it under the counter to stick.. So I had to use E6000 to keep it stuck under the counter and it has never come off since..So just a tidbit and it has held up well for 3 years but like I said I did have to use E6000 to keep it up under the counters Seems the materials are different under the counter, more porous I suppose but anyhow seeing you always give me advice I thought I'd give you a little.😊

Great job and it looks awesome. So between the 3 methods 1. Paint 2. Spray paint 3. Contact paper which one held up the best and will last the longest? Thanks

Was the original wood grain surface you sanded a very thin veneer on MDF board ? I have the thin veneer and it has some very deep gouges to where the MDF is showing through. This process probably isn’t the right move in my particular situation but wanted your opinion. Thanks for the great channel. New subscriber !

Hi Kyle I have had this product in my camper for 3 years..I live in northern Minnesota where it gets 50 below zero..And can be 90 to 95 in the summer at points. Nothing has ever happened to my countertops. No we don't live in it. We store it under a lean-to up at the barn. Only thing is I did find we had to use the E6000 to make it stick under the counter, Apparently it's very porous under there😊. And I get it wet a lot because it's on counters It seems to be holding up.

Hi there! New pop up owner here. Love your videos but looking for one that discusses leaking door. The rubber strip on top of my lower door has rotted. Tried to replace but is now leaking. Don’t think what I used is proper weather strip?? Any tips you can provide would be appreciated. Do you advise a pop up cover in the winter if stored outdoors? Thank you so much!! 😊
@ItsPoppin
@ItsPoppin 2 жыл бұрын
The weather strips I'm familiar with on the top of doors are gray plastic "L" shaped weather stripping. What you have might be different? A temporary fix might be to use a foam pipe insulator or a pool noodle, cut to size, and then slid over top of the door. This will keep the water out while the roof is down. Also if you're storing your pop up outdoors, get a purpose-made breathable cover. Don't use a regular tarp.

I know that using contact paper seems to be the most popular method of redoing countertops, but how well do they hold up? Is using paint and then an epoxy coating (like you did in your Starcraft) a better & more durable method? I would assume so, but I could be wrong.
@ItsPoppin
@ItsPoppin 2 жыл бұрын
Time will tell. This is some pretty thick stuff so I think the tops will be pretty durable. The only thing that might not be as durable - or might lift off - are those edges.
