This video highlights the core concepts around pulling to guard. When you pull, pull directly down; momentum will build up on the way down for your usage. If you're being pulled down, when there is a directional pull just side step and circumvent the pull.

This lesson was done impromptu in class because many of the students are competing soon. Jean Jacques' philosophy is, you are training for in a jiu jitsu competition, not a judo or wrestling competition - take the game to the ground quickly so that you can spend more time doing what you actually trained. This is not intended for a self defense situation. For self defense, you must remember that when you are training jiu jitsu, you are training to keep you and others safe. The more you train, the more YOU become dangerous; keep your distance from dangerous situations to protect the AGGRESSOR from being hurt by you. Self defense distance concept is shown in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gWeymoujlrCpnKM

Isnt martial arts for self defense? Not "competition"? Might be a waste of time and not practical. Should train for actual self defense, that's why we are training martial arts and not a sport like hockey or something? Or am I missing something?
@julylifecoach
@julylifecoach 2 жыл бұрын
@@johnwick9765 the academy has students training for variety of reasons and JJ caters to their needs. Sometimes we have pure self defense classes, sometimes we have competition-focused techniques. He does advocate training jiu jitsu purely, rather than focusing solely on competition. This is just one video of one class.

@@johnwick9765 Martial arts can be for self defense, but it can also be whatever you want it to be. Some people are trying to lose weight and get exercise. Some just like it as a sport in and of itself. Some actually want to learn it for self defense. Some are high-school/college wrestlers that don't know where else to go and need to scratch that itch.

@@777Skeptic if people want to lost weight and exercise they should invest in a personal trainer and a nutritionist. And yes people come to martial arts for many reasons but when you start teach stuff that's not practical, someone will get hurt and you end up training stuff that isn't realistic and works. Sure it'll work for competition but there is a saying, "showing off is the fools idea of glory"

Do not do this in a street fight/real fight, its stupid. I say this as someone who trains BJJ, you will get your face punched in or jumped by other people around you. Keep the fight standing in a real fight, if its 1v1, then sure take them down, but actually take them down, don't try this pull guard nonsense, look at MMA, when punches get added into the equation, this is a dumb move. People will punch you from your closed guard if you don't pull off the sweep.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu...in the early days of the UFC, the Gracies petitioned to change the rules to be in their favor, and to take away certain advantages from their opponents. When the Gracies were working to establish their dominance over the fight game in Brazil, a man named Rufino dos Santos who was a catch wrestling instructor challenged members of the Gracie family and he beat every one of them that he fought against. Since the Gracies couldn't beat dos Santos in a fair match, one day three of the Gracies confronted dos Santos in the street and beat him with pipes, permanently disabling him. The Gracies are bad actors. They are liars and cheats. I mean, they actually teach military and law enforcement to roll around on the ground with assailants while wearing a heavy load of tactical gear. If you're rolling on the ground with a hostile assailant in a real life combat situation, where is your tactical awareness in terms of potential multiple attackers? Yeah, you might be "winning" against that one guy, but then his buddy comes and kicks you in the face! The Gracies are a bunch of clowns.

I don’t know in a perfect environment like the dojo perhaps? I would definitely not do this in the street? The chances of falling on rocks broken glass edge of the curb etc is very high and you could end up in hospital before you even defend yourself. I think jujitsu has its limitations and in the ring in the dojo fine perfect environment nothing to hurt themselves on. Down the street definitely not good way to get beaten up especially if he doesn’t come alone. But there’s a bit of advice from someone that is experienced in real life fighting good luck guys

Im stunned at how many people comment without ever watching the video. This is not for self defense, probably not even a good idea in mma for most people.

@@vids595 to pull guard and have someone on top of you,is a silly idea,okay bjj because you don’t get punched or elbowed in the face,so it’s unrealistic

I wish. Atleast sacrifice throw actually throw people. Pulling guard is just...pulling people down and expect them to play with you inside closed guard
