his lack of empathy regarding the attack on Lunney was shocking, and was his comment that only Lunney knows why he was attacked seemed like victim shaming and also maybe an admission. Also i've met the priest in Ballyconnell he did a funeral for a close family member of mine and he is an honourable man.

I agree with most of what you say, im from south east of country, I have no affilition to sean Quinn or the family, my company was insured by quinn insurance, I had first hand experience of how they operated. an employee of mine had a minor work accident. H fell and broke three ribs. Long story short Quinns representative luaused through myself and a settlement was reached for 11k. This was paid 12 days as full and final settlement from the day of the accident. Quinns guy told me that they settle approx 50% of their claims fast and efficiently like this . The regulators figures on the requirement of cash for claims was based on the global insurance business model. My solicitor told me this case would probably rake 2/3 years with other competitors and the compensation would be 20 to 25 k plus the same on costs.Quinns cost were approx 1k plus the payout 11k. they settled for total 12 k all competitors pay up to 50k. basically Quinns model meant that approx value of 550million claims they would settle for approx 150million. So based on their business model I believe instead of being under indemnified by 150 million they were in my opinion over indemnified by approx 350million. I can make this comment based on my experience working with them on claims. So I think your comments insinuating that Quinn insurance was actually not realising profits of 200million per year are based on media and the regulator who didn't assess the Quinn situation based on their business model. yes Sean Quinn took a crazy unforgivable gamble, but I believe if supported the empire could havdctraded hhrough and not be a burden on all of us and our kids. sometimes a calculation is required as to what is the greater of two evils. I believe 10 years they could gave fixed things if supported and I wouldn't be paying for it now Michael

Your point is well made and I agree. I think looking back the Government were reeling from the bank bailout and they and the public had no appetite for risk in a Quinn bailout.the sums involved were "irish economy damaging" . They wanted Quinn out , which was reasonable. The better long term strategy would have been to allow Quinn to trade his way out of it and tax his profits instead of our insurance policies. But hindsight is 20\20. Alan Dukes managed to come out of the program rather badly. But again its a very PC world we live in nowadays. I notice Liberty ins still have an office in cavan.

Dont think you understand, trading through it would have meant money would have to be found to pay the debt. It was up to Quinn family to find these funds, as ultimate owner and benefactor of the cmpany. Not the taxpayers. Taxpayers taking the hit now, is far less than in 10 years time

If he hadn’t broke the golden rule of investing ( diversification) none of this mess would have happened. If more people around him knew he was putting it all into one basket, I’m sure somebody would have persuaded him to lessen the amount he put into Anglo. One good thing is that a lot of people in that area are still employed in good jobs in the factories and plants.

Watched the whole thing and recommended to many others. Totally agree with your views on Quinn and how you summed him up. One thing I don't accept is the narrative the Quinn is to blame for the recession, the USC and the ironically named Quincy levy. Correct me if I'm wrong but were there not other insurance companies underfinanced, Satanta and the like. Also there are so many more gamblers, involved in the story, ie the Maple 10 and financial regulator not at the races etc. Looking forward to the documentary about these lads.

Thanks Terry for the review and I agree but one thing I don't understand for years since the crash why didn't the financial regulator get jail as I thought he is the man to make sure everything is above board which is a very responsible job and I'm sure with a high wage packet and pension but nothing happened him or Fitzpatrick or Drum who were all on massive money and homebond another company suppose to be there to make sure everything is ok with the building of a house and charging a lot of money and the banks like to have them there as a safety net then this pyride comes and there is no mention of homebond and are still trading and left to the tax payer again.Maybe I'm wrong if I am I apologize but be great for your view on this or even a video.Thanks Terry.

Exactly your the only one to mention these two toe rags. Quin ask them time & time again what was going on. They knew the bank would crash but used him to take the fall. They knew it was a poncy scheme. But told Quin it was a blip and all would be well. Absolutely shocking how they never took responsibility and how Quin was done over by this bank.

I like Sean Quinn. Yes he messed up with the CFD’s but how can somebody with so much experience & savvy go so wrong ? I’d have to question both his advisors & the financial regulator at the time. Yes, we have the 2% levy until 2037 but let’s not forget people of my age couldn’t get insurance except from QD. He messed up he knows it. The Lunny thing is another story.

Quinn was the total boss and you get the impression he did things without informing others and even if they did know dissenting voices were not allowed even from his own kids. He seemed to go on gut instinct and it worked very well for him right up until it didn't. He took his position in Anglo without appearing to do any due diligence and when it started to go wrong rather than cut his losses he doubled down and went further in.

Great video, thanks for explaining and giving a clear picture of what happened. I watched the whole documentary but really found it hard to understand how he lost it all. It's very clear now. In some ways I felt a small bit sorry for him, he got stuck in a rut and keep going no matter what. I find it hard to understand how he could put all bets on one horse or as you say, threw the farm at it. After all the businesses he build from the ground up and I am sure there were many ups and downs along the way, to then put it all on one bet. I don't think he ever realised the real consequences as the whole thing took course.

However, having gambled it all away, I think the programme did not shine enough light on his possible criminality on hiding assets and his inexcusable arrogance which undoubtedly encouraged others to engage in further criminal acts of wanton violence against people and property.

Thank you. It's rare to find an unbiased analysis on this case. Seems most people tend to forgive all of the skulduggery, corruption, ineptitude and violence because Quinn gave the locals jobs etc. He didn't give jobs out of altruism. He needed a workforce. It's called capitalism. He played the game and failed, albeit he still gets to retain numerous millions of pounds. I'm flabbergasted that average people, struggling at he minute, still show pity to this corrupt multi millionaire.

All I need to know about Sean Quinn is that anytime I need to purchase car insurance I have to pay a levy for his mess ups. Socialised losses for the elite. I just walked into the kitchen this morning to make a coffee and Morning Ireland or whatever that rubbish is called is still going with the meme that we all partied in the Celtic Tiger era. They must have been living in an alternative universe to me. I recall all my friends being too broke to even have a few drinks on the weekend, the pubs would only have people in them around 11pm because it was too expensive for them. I had to pull out of college because I couldn't afford it, even when working weekends. I wasn't given any government handouts. When I worked fulltime, it was shiftwork and for 40 hours a week. All I could afford was a single room, where I saved as much money every week as I could. From what I can see, since the 80s, spending power has been going downwards and the costs of housing and socialising has been going up and up to a point where nobody can afford to go out much, nobody can afford big families anymore, most people can barely afford a modest home.

If he had engaged with them openly them this might have happened, but once they discovered he had not been fully truthful about the state of the insurance company and was trying to move assets out of reach then all negotiations were over. The covert video of his son and nephew tells the tale of their attitude very well.

They were siphoning off money left right and centre. He kept saying he had properties that did not have loans on them so it was nothing to do with the banks, but if you owe 3bn the bank comes after everything you own to clear the debt. He also said, look, I can make back the 3bn I owe you if you give me another 600m working capital.....This was just as the country was heading into recession so it was questionable as to whether he could have paid it back.

An excellent documentary. I learned a gread deal from.this documentary. Its a tragic story. What a shame Sean Quinn was tempted or persuaded to get involved in any way with the Anglo Irish Bank the worst bank ever which we now know but was at the time described at the "most prosperous bank in the world". What an extraordinary Irish man this man even think of setting up a business in a place where there was no jobs and high emigration. He could have emigrated like all the rest but stayed at home left school early and looked around to see how could he make a pound. He succeeded and created work for himself and many more. What an extraordinary man we will never see the likes of him again in this era. What happened was a tragedy for Sean Quinn his wife, his family and all the workers in the area. A terrible human tragedy for everyone in volved in this story. PS gambling of any sort is dangerous.

Good analysis. The documentary marker let Quinn talk. No interrupting with sticky questions and this approach worked. He constantly contradicted himself. Such as his final tearful line that he never did anything dishonest.

And Judge Peter Kelly, in the High Court, described Quinn's attempts to put assets beyond the reach of receiver/examiner was "devious" as follows: Mr Justice Peter Kelly said the Quinns had created a scheme that was mesmerisingly complex and reeking of dishonesty and sharp practice, to put assets beyond the reach of the bank and “feather their own nests”. The judge said while he had presided over the Commercial Court since 2004 and was dealing more often with cases involving “national and international fraud, sharp practice, chicanery and dishonesty”, he had never seen anything like the conduct in this case.

Enjoyed your analysis Terry. The man became deluded into thinking he couldn’t possibly fail and even as the reality of the Anglo situation stared him in the face, he continued to load up, and like the compulsive gambler, chase his losses. Seeing the continued support for Quinn locally, and by such distinguished individuals as Micky Harte, is an interesting study in itself- the challenge people face in overcoming their own confirmation bias and self interest to see the truth of the matter. So Mickey's endorsement may come from a particular worldview rather than a rational review of the facts and evidence in any particular case.

Mickey seems to take very blinkered views; didn’t he hold RTE to ransom over their failure to promote Brian Carty to a leading commentator position. Spot on…under reserving, refusing to “look round corners,” kidding himself that he was making piles of money, just not understanding the insurance business in the first place, but the brown stuff hits the fan, discovers contracts for difference, tosses a coin. Possible but unlikely given his age. He looks like it haunts him every day. He still has wealth most could only dream of but can't seem to forget what he used to have not just in money but in the way the local community held him up as almost superhuman. The truth wasn't actually told about Anglo Irish Bank. They cooked the books with a large investment near year end to try prove it was viable, when indeed it wasn't!!! CFDs should have been made illegal and they weren't. Where was the Regulator did he didn't cop on sooner about who was buying CFDs? Loads and loads of questions not asked or answered in the documentary. Typical RTE/FG viewpoint.

Sean Quinn was no more guilty than any one of a thousand and one operatives during the so called Celtic Tiger period.From my recollections of the crash and the Quinn saga in particular there were very many more actors and events, none of whom or which featured in the programme. As for gambling, was not the State itself and its officers most at fault in the punt they took on the building industry,,not to mention the bank guarantee . The line comes to mind from 'The Outlaw Josey Wales', dont p... down my back General and try to tell me it's raining. Maybe Sean should find himself a good ghost writer and put his recollections of the period in a book, which I have no doubt would be a best seller.

Well their is two sides to every story for sure. You seem to putting the blame 100% on Quinn which is incorrect. The bank told him lies about the position of the bank in order for him to buy shares to prop the bank up. They even put a financial arrangement in place in order to facilitate him. A some of the senior employees got jail over their input to the downfall of the bank. Not a word about them breaking the law on the program. The attitude of the bank was sell it on at any cost. This will rubble on in the area for generations to come. If the Government had to stump 600 million Quinn needed to continue it would all be paid back now and none of the trouble in the area would have happened. A sad ending to a great company 😢

Sean Quinn was treated very badly all round. Quinn put a lot of work in and around an area that had little going for it. He was lied too about the financial status regarding the banks resources. Then he was treated like a leper by the liquiddaters. He would have contributed a lot more, if he had been given a chance to do so.
