Honestly I'm glad we're getting shorter and more varied segments with the bird avatar, even if they may take more time to make because of the nature of animating something however crudely instead of filming live action, because good god those were a pace breaker and the amount of "lore" just bloated the videos. Especially the compilation reviews, they can easily have from 20 to 30 minutes gutted from them if you were to take out the live action segments, with little lost in terms of substance.

The Wing Fortress launcher not sending you over the pit isn't a glitch. Sonic 1 and 2 have an air speed cap that's active whenever you hold left or right on the d-pad. That's the same reason the spring in Emerald Hill 2 sent you into that enemy. If you let go of the d-pad, the Wing Fortress launchers and diagonal springs will send you much further.

Um, that in _itself_ IS a glitch. Holding FORWARD shouldn't SLOW DOWN your character. Duh. Yes, once you get it, you can adapt to it, but it goes against all intuition, and as Retropolis Zone said, first attempts matter, so don't "git gud" or "skill issue" or even "real difficulty" me or anyone else about it, especially since everyone's time is limited. Another unfortunate consequence of Sonic being made fast.

Time for some random Sonic 2 technical trivia! 29:33 Tails' hitbox actually doesn't shrink when he crouches! Why? No idea. This means Tails is actually taller than Sonic when they're both crouching... However, Sonic's crush detection hitbox actually doesn't shrink when he crouches either, so in this particular spot it wouldn't make a difference, and he would die too. It's only his damage hitbox that actually shrinks. 9:08 and 34:14 are both caused by the same quirk: You actually get launched a shorter distance if you're holding down the direction you're being launched in, because of the air speed cap. This was fixed in the mobile remake/Origins, as well as in Sonic 3 (and even Knuckles in Sonic 2). This was probably something the devs intended to fix before release, considering the level design punishes you pretty hard for not knowing about it, but considering the insane crunch the last few weeks were under, it slipped by.

Big fan of this blended commentary with footage in the background into sudden reactions to what’s happening in the background footage, which is especially really well done in jokes like the one about how easy it is to dodge Eggman’s hammer immediately preceding footage and audio of tails getting hit by the hammer. On that note, the timing of jokes is just really well done in this video. You’ve always been funny and good with timing/anticipation, but this video especially knocks that out of the park. Also, great job with the pacing. This video is over half an hour, but it doesn’t drag on at all. Great video!!!

Great video as usual, but I don't understand your take on the Generations Casino Night theme. It's an extremely faithful recreation of what the 16-bit version was trying to do within the limitations of its soundchip, they just added solos instead of repeating the same short loop over and over, which I'm sure one would appreciate in such a static screen as the pinball machine.

the only difference I'm aware of between Sonic and Tails in Sonic 2 is that Sonic can duck to shield himself the chemical drops the boss attacks you with in Chemical Plant act 2, and Tails doesn't have that benefit for some reason

it's because tails's object hitbox doesn't actually shrink when he ducks, so the hurtwater will always hit him before it hits the ground yes, the reason why it doesn't hurt sonic is because ducking makes him too short for the water to hit him before splattering off the ground. that projectile's hitbox is _genuinely_ more fucked-up than you can imagine, it's _that_ bad

🤡 Thinking of special stages, the one that's haunted me for years is the DS title Sonic Rush. I was definitely an unskilled little kid at the time, but I remember the last one was such a bastard to get. You needed to do well in the stage itself, but then also do a join-the-dots thing repeatedly to pass it, and I swear some of them went by so fast I didn't have chance to read the numbers, never mind draw between them all. And it didn't help that I was on the OG DS at the time, with the relatively dim and small screen. Seriously, when my sister got a DS lite and I saw the brightness I was so surprised. Also as you mentioned the 50/60hz thing, my first Sonic game was Sonic 1 and 2 on the older 8-bit console, also in 50hz. When I got older and made it onto the internet, I found out my entire Sonic foundation was "wrong". Green Hill zone's music doesn't play that fast, what's with this OST? My Sonic 2 didn't start in Emerald Hill, it was some desert place with minecarts! The first boss wasn't even Robotnik, and in fact he saved me from a lava-y death! Stage 2's boss was some robot bird! How did everyone else get to play as that yellow guy in the splash screens?
