He is an interesting figure in the community because he has a political science background. Hes here on his own Utica mesjid channel on KZbin. Also blogging theology has a few interviews with him including a deep dive into the book "the impossible state" by hallaq.

I have appreciated his worldview and his perspective on a lot of things that one takes casually and routinely. The video is too short. We'd love to hear more from Imam Tom In shaa Allah.

as a graduate student in the liberal arts and someone memorizing quran again this talk very much resonated with me. There are moments in my classes and when I’m doing my readings where I can feel and sense the liberal arts education/post-modern way of thinking, trying to reshape how I view and interpret the world. But because I’m grounded in islam, I keep finding myself pushing against the liberal education trying to seep in and settle in my mind and heart. I try my best to make dua that I take this knowledge at face value and not internalize any of it even if it might hinder me from gaining access to certain ways of understanding. Alhamdulillah and thank you Imam Tom for this talk! May Allah reward you for your efforts! Wish I could hear from you on this topic and learn more about this further.

Insightful talk. Ethics are the first thing that are discarded. Every excuses are on display to discourage ethical behaviours. We are told that being ethical will have negative repercussions on our livelihood. And this lack of ethics are causing havoc in our societies.
@junayedmustofaghalib46837 ай бұрын
When you say ethic, what do you precisely mean by that?
@sarahsamaria82837 ай бұрын
@@junayedmustofaghalib4683ethical behaviour means doing right by others. A few examples:- you don't steal or give short to people. By this I mean if you are paid for a job, you do the job. It may be you don't like the job or you feel that you are not being paid as you should., still you must do the job to your best ability and in the time given to you. Don't steal time by coming late and leaving early or wasting it. In businesses deal with your customers and suppliers fairly. Don't take bribe. Don't let others behaviour affect your conduct. And with families do your duty whether there is appreciation or not. Most important always think whether Allah will be happy with my actions and decisions. If Allah is at the forefront of everything you do, then you can never go wrong. And if mistakes happened, apologise and admit it. It's better to ask for forgiveness here than to burn in hell. And most important, if you do right by others, you will feel good in your own self.

Interesting. As i understand Shaykh Hisham Kabbani said "there is small buddha and there is big buddha...there is small Shaitan and there is big Shaitan" referring to the statues i belief. So Buddhism is problematic to say the least from a islamic perspective. Dalai Lama said; ethics are more important than religion. And he is wrong I think. So, yes Ethics should be clear (what it is). About this speaker - i don't see his ihsan

Alhamdulilah first of all I never leave comments, this is my first because I am so happy to see Imam Tom here at CMC. He is one of the many gems from Yaqeen Institute. I am so encouraged to see this collaboration, because working together despite any differences (my opinion from experience) is the major step towards unity, we need this now like oxygen for breath. Imam Tom dealt with a vast topic in such an excellent and succinct manner Masha'Allah. Every word held value and guidance and should be heard by all to use as a framework to build on how we live and work Allah bless him and all behind this endeavour ameen. Together we are stronger, insha'Allah 😊

The keyword is CULTURE This word seems to resonate in everything we do and links to our worship and purpose of life But culture gives us the space to understand and EXPRESS The many Muslim societies and normals.. the way we read quran and ikhlaas All this is return to the word culture and our need to EXPRESS ourselves through belief in Allah It's as if we have something inside us that's looking for Allah the source of amazing enrichment fascination and happiness beyond our imagination Everyone if you notice have this inside their biology and fitra to grow and express different unique dynamics of our DNA (knowledge/fitra) Btw mashalla you sound a bit like Omar Suleiyman

Indeed, e.g. the Qur'anic inheritence law in a culture where women also support the family financially, is not urf and goes against Divine guidance.
