One of my forebears kept a journal while traveling west on the Mormon trail (which ran parallel to the Oregon trail on the other side of the river). The actual Oregon Trail was preserved as a national landmark by my great-great uncle, Ezra Meeker. He drove his ox pulled wagon down New York's 5th Avenue, and also on the White House lawn. He personally met President Theodore Roosevelt and Calvin Coolidge. He was also the first mayor of Puyallup, Washington.
