We've had open gangways on subway trains for a few years now in Toronto. The extra capacity is marginal. And when issues arise on parts of the train you have to take the whole train out of service versus prior just closing or isolating the impacted train-car.

I’m pretty sure you can disconnect the car, and the open gangways can be taken apart and hidden doors can be slid back. Also, New York is a different city than Toronto, and the extra capacity will help (I can tell you’ve never been on a crowded New York train at rush hour)

​@@smythfamily8321 The original way to separate the cars is by the push of a button. These new cars literally has to be taken apart. There is alot more work involved to uncouple them. There is no hidden doors. The whole train has to be taken out of service. I have been on a packed NYC subway as well as a packed Toronto subway. I would agree that extra capacity is marginal

From Montreal, we have open gangway trains, even when there is trouble, it usually stays in the same car. It was also the saving grace for space on our subway

Well you lot from over that side have crept up to it, but so far no mention of the good ol' days with gangs of steamers relieving commuters of Cell phones &c. Now some kind gentleman has removed the necessity to change carriages/cars via the next station. 1:43 Compared to the century earlier coaches here, I remain to be convinced of the new ones' features which have evidently set hearts aflutter. The regular buttresses of shiny metal throughout 2:24 presumably cd function as roll bars. They are awful and at best look like luggage racks with the passengers akin to baggage in a luggage van. More likely they will be comoared to gaol bars.
