The Race For Speed: What Supersonic Passenger Planes Could We See By 2030?

Imagine a world where New Yorkers can head to London for the day and be back in their own bed by the end of the night. Well, if all goes according to plan, this type of supersonic travel could happen before the end of the decade.
The last commercial supersonic flight was over 17 years ago. Were you around to see it happen?
The maximum speed of air travel has decreased since then but that is set to change in the next decade as several manufacturers work on new aircraft.

Enjoying your videos. A suggestion, if I may. The audio from your remote contributors is often pretty poor, compared to the excellent voice over. Would it be possible they record their comments with decent microphones, while you are communicating remotely? That way, you could use these higher quality recordings of the Zoom calls, or whatever you are using there.

Wow, you know I’ve heard it said that these will be just super playthings for the super and ultra rich, but now that I see that the largest plane only sits 55, now I’m convinced. These new planes may be technologically advanced, but really unless these prove to be highly successful to allow economy class travel, these are just increasing the divide between the middle and upper class, at the cost of our environment.

I have been inside the Concorde in Scotland. What shocked me was how small it was (door and windows) and the seats looked smaller than my VS flight. Would be interesting if they figure out a way to make the windows a little bigger and possibly chuck in a few sunroofs, to ease the cramped feeling. I really wish BA, would look at engine options and possible consider putting 1 Concorde back into service. I really think there is a market from Asia to Middle East and the UK

Supersonic passenger planes are real fuel hogs, not green at all. The Concorde was a technical marvel that never made money. Air travel takes all day, travel to and from the airport , getting through security, and flight delays take two or three times the flight time. Even if the flight time were zero your whole day is shot. Why pay five or ten times as much for a ticket when your total travel time is only reduced by 10% or 20%.
@dwightlooi
@dwightlooi 3 жыл бұрын
The Concorde did not fail because of fuel consumption or ticket prices -- it flew full most of the time. It failed because it was denied the ability to flyover land and it DIDN'T HAVE THE RANGE to fly most trans-oceanic routes. In the end it was down to NY-London-Paris amounted to a dozen or so aircraft. This is not enough to support ANY commercial aircraft program. -- For any of the new supersonic entries to succeed they need to win regulatory approval to fly over land or they need enough range to cross the pacific -- preferably both but either alone will make them commercially viable. Crossing the pacific means 6300 nm of range. About the same as a Boeing 787-10 or the classic 777-200; enough for LA-Beijing, SF-Taipei, NY-Dubai, etc.

With the current air transport crisis, there is no market for supersonic passenger planes. Anyhow, there are currently no plane engines able to fly at supersonic speed with an acceptable fuel consumption while meeting noise regulations around civil airports... A totally new kind of engines should be developped, which would take many years at huge cost for a very small market, without any garantee to get a satisfying result !

Australia is so far away we always longed for supersonic flight. COVID 19 has meant we are glad to be so far away. I flew Concorde once. July 1979 before they started jacking up prices to be nearly double by 1982. London to New York in 3 hrs 23 minutes instead of 7 hrs. Leave London at 11 am arrive New York 9.30 am At 55,000 to 58,000 feet sipping champers only fighter pilots in G suits get this high and this fast... So amazing. Up till COVID you could be a passenger in a Russian Mig for US $20,000 to take you to Mach 1.7 and 50,000 feet - making Concorde even more exceptional. Hope BOOM is succesful - with a 'softer' sonic boom over land.... Good Luck.

You left out a name in the listing of American SST proposals and quite honestly it should have been the one chosen. At the time that this whole venture was started North American Aviation was putting the XB-70 through its paces and hitting speeds of Mach 3+ so they had a proven and working design that would, with some redesigning, have easily translated over into a civilian airliner design, albeit one that would have topped out at Mach 2.65. For some inexcusable reason the less complex and viable option was passed over for highly complex ( for the time ) swing wing design that in the end was dropped for what was essentially a copy of the Concorde's delta design. Its all really a shame and causes the avgeek in me no small amount of consternation every time that I see one of these videos and ponder what could have been...
