Great great video, Dave. You are a warrior. My family also echoes that you have that non-Dad body. My youngest was like, "Wow, he is kind of ripped. It is not clear from his videos." I might be a lot slower and hit my low points at different times, but I went through a lot of the same in my race. I think the two things about the temp was the humidity was really high this year and the lack of wind throughout almost 90 something percent of the course. I also went through shivering while being hot at various times. It is super tough on crew and pacers. Also, after camp 10 bear, there is a good almoat 2 mile stretch all put in the sun with a descent climb after it mostly in the sun, which makes it super hard. Volunteers and race organizers and Amy are just awesome! Sorry for the long long post. Like others said, you really captured this race well. Great job with the new style.

Even the thoughts of a 100-mile distance sends shiver down my spine, not to mention running such a race. I remember myself crossing the finish line at a marathon one month ago. I planned to finish the marathon fresh enough to continue my training plan (that wasn't the main race this year). But something went wrong... My family said that I looked like a mad hedgehog after the finish line (don't ask why hedgehog:))). That was only 26.2 miles. A 100-mile race is a big deal. That's cool! Congratulations!

On a 50+ mile race, same thing happened, but when I talk to them found out that they even made their hydration fuel at about less than half strength. since then I just bring my own and now I’m a little bit more fat adapted so now probably would work fine. but at that point, I wasn’t ready for that and it destroyed me. Great video I’ve always heard a lot about that race. I guess that’s one good point that these races are every year there’s always redemption but you’re finished. Congratulations. Nice work man and great video. I wanted to mention that I also experienced the full body shaking / shivers despite it being warm on my previous race. It happened mile 35 ish for me, the second I sat down at an aid station. I had to bury my entire body under a blanket for 20 minutes to stop it. I wonder if it’s a dehydration, lack of nutrition, or low blood sugar.

Chafe the Summit sounds hilarious, no sure I'd watch the videos though. Odd that the FR 965 didn't notify you that you were off course (didn't have turn by turn switched on?). I had one for a month before sending it back, one of the things I disliked about it was that it wouldn't identify off course for about 100 meters. It's precisely what you experienced that I'd want to avoid. Well done for completing it. Great effort.
@ChaseTheSummit5 ай бұрын
I left turn by turn notifications off as they can get a bit annoying after a long period of time. It gave me silent “off course” notifications but I didn’t notice until I was 1/2 mile down the hill 😂

The severe shivering that you experienced was likely an episode of orthostatic hypotension Short version, your body’s demand for oxygen caused your vessels to dilate, which lowered your blood pressure. You may have been a bit dehydrated, which reduced blood volume and this further reduced blood pressure. The muscle contractions in your legs help return venous blood from the legs to the heart while you are running or walking. But when you stop moving, blood starts to pool in the dilated vessels in the legs. This means that your brain and your core aren’t getting enough oxygen, and uncontrolled shivering when you’re not actually cold is one of the symptoms. Your body was starting to go into shock. In this situation getting warm helps the blood in the legs return to the heart so it can get to the brain and the core. The other option is to start walking and get the blood moving back to the heart that way. Either way, getting fluid volume into you is also essential. Hydrate until you pee and keep hydrating until the color is normal.
@ChaseTheSummit5 ай бұрын
Sounds about right! I was definitely dehydrated. Lots of signs like not much coming out and a lot of fluid going in. Pretty strange because I had been doing a lot of heat training and was taking in a lot of fluid on a pretty mild day weather wise 🤷♂️ thanks for sharing some medical knowledge!
