I Believe when they don't build a good nest there is something that they are not contented with, could be the pair not keen on one another. It could be that they are yearlings that are inexperienced, in any case it would tell me that something isn't quite right, good Pigeons love to build good nests. HAVE A GREAT SEASON 👍

Very interesting. I used to bring pine needles as nest material since this was plentiful and easy to obtain in my area. Observing pigeons moving twigs to build their nests is very satisfying. Record keeping is fascinating, it will make you wiser. This data can help you in the long run for clear analysis and evaluation purposes. Have a nice weekend Andrei!

I do a lot of record keeping on health and behaviour of all the pigeons, each of them has its own excel file row that I fill during its life. Pine needles are great but I am too lazy lately. 🤭Have a great weekend!

Interesting! May I suggest you take a tour of your town and observe what the feral pigeons are using to construct their nests. You may find that the twigs and stems they are using are a little more firm and stiff than what you are putting down for your birds on the floor. We have a tree here called a Black Walnut tree that has a stiff stem that is very slim and about 6 - 8 inches long and the feral pigeons really love to use those stems for nests. I have gathered them and made them available for my breeders and they really went after them. Pine needles work ok too. Pigeons are not really fond of 'flimsy' nest materials like grass stems. They will use it if that is all that is available, but it is not their preference. Additionally, in the bottom of the nest bowl I also put 2 or 3 cured tobacco leaves. This will drive the pigeon flies and feather lice from the nest. I really love your birds. So healthy and happy they are!
@Pigeonmaniacom
@Pigeonmaniacom Жыл бұрын
You are totally right. They prefer more firm sticks. From the material I give them, the ones I filmed are the leftovers none of them really liked, they took the firm stems first. I also offer them walnut leaves and tobacco stems when available.
@George.T.
@George.T. Жыл бұрын
Although it seems the male is responsible for the low number of sticks in the nest, I say the female is equal in this responsibility. Some of them are more attached to the nest and are interested in building a large one by asking the male for more sticks, while others leave the nest frequently until the time they lay the eggs. Years ago I've noticed these things, when I changed the pairs and part of females had the big nests with lazy males.
@Pigeonmaniacom
@Pigeonmaniacom Жыл бұрын
You are right, I noticed this too, some females are good builders and keep asking for sticks. Some of them even carry sticks along with the males. Unfortunately this year I have cases of females with poor nests while they had excellent nests last year. Anyway, some of the males continue bringing sticks after the eggs are laid. I think that driving to the nest makes them very focused on driving and they ignore everything else... when the driving is gone, they can focus on nest building (maybe too late for some eggs). I have some males that are so agitated during nest driving that they don't even let the females eat or drink, I have to help them. In nature the driving to the nest isn't so agitated because the birds live more spread apart and the males aren't in danger of having other males mating with their females. Our pigeons are also very calm in individual breeding sections.
@George.T.
@George.T. Жыл бұрын
@@Pigeonmaniacom Driving to the nest makes them very stressed and it is the main reason, that's for sure, but all I wanted to underline is that females are "responsible" too. Beside of that it could be other many reasons like feeling inconfortable on the ground because of other teritorial males, health and not for the last, nest attraction itself. Genetics and loosing the instinct, I think we should keep at the last, my opinion...

There are some couples who prepare the nest before laying eggs, and other couples wait for the eggs, then they prepare the nest, and this is normal, but fear comes after a while and the eggs are not fertilized. Here lies the problem.💖

Hi Andrei. it will be good to see which are better racers comparing to which ones build better nests. Many years ago my dad couldnt understand why the nests were full of lollypop sticks. He followed them one day in his car and they were bringing them back from a car park about a mile away from the loft. Your pigeons look in fantastic health. I hope your breeding goes really well.

Really nice to see more of the inside of your lofts. It is an interesting topic and observation about the nest building instinct declining. It would be cool to gather a lot of data to infer whether or not there is any potential genetic relationship. You provided a few examples here. This is clearly an important survival trait for wild pigeons. If they don’t build a proper nest, there is greater potential their eggs will break and thus they don’t pass on their genes.
@Pigeonmaniacom
@Pigeonmaniacom Жыл бұрын
I will try to find excuses for some of them with the fact that they are driving to the nest and are very stressed to leave the females and work on the nest. When I feed them and all the females mix on the floor the males go crazy. And they have a reason for that, I saw males mating with other females than their own. Some males continue working on the nests after the females lay their first egg. Some of them will always have absolutely empty nests, and I don't really care at the racers section... but from these, when I forget to replace them with plastic eggs occasionally some manage to hatch youngsters... I think it is an art to incubate eggs on a hard floor. 😆

@alanjpoole7274

Perhaps it is to do with the on going hawk problem and the pigeons not feeling particularly safe in the garden, looking for wooden twigs and old feathers. However, as you are putting straw/hay inside the loft, this should encourage them to start going up and down to their nestboxes. Are your birds all different ages? Perhaps the younger ones would watch what the older birds are doing and copy them. (When I had pigeons, we used to put sawdust in the nest bowls, and offer straw/hay a bit afterwards)

I was gonna comment to make a video about the racing performance of best nest builder vs the others but u already said that and i think this should be the next video.... My surviving birds started breeding and the pairs that i brought from outside one of them is such a terrible nest builder that she lost both eggs today after being on them for almost 2 weeks.... One thing i noticed is that one new pair that i introduced is from a friend who let his birds freely roam all day... That pair made such a perfect nest that i am amazed

Vant in pene!

Salut.

Pigeons have never been strong nest builders, even in the wild. Their natural habitat is flat cliff faces, pigeons have never had much of a need for strong nest building instincts.

I wish I could see videos about the life of the rock dove, there are a few old ones but just showing them flying or landing on cliffs. Is there a place where I could see nests? Googling "rock dove nest" I see pretty big nests, and the same are the feral pigeon nests. There are cases of domestic pigeons that build huge nests - should we consider these the "errors" of their breed? They would be the most successful breeders should our help never come. I've seen tons of eggs broken in empty nests long before I had the time to replace them with plastic eggs. Too many to even think about the fact that all of them had too soft egg shells. Sometimes the pigeon is just a sticky mess on the belly area and goes flying with the egg shell sticky on its belly. Such a funny but also sad view. Did the wild pigeons have a special skill to incubate eggs on the empty rock?

Salut. Probleme in ce sens?
