The Regiments history in WW2 was awesome. They were brought in to help hold the line in Italy, outside of their normal role. A couple of days later they were asked to be not so aggressive. They served in many theatres including North African, Sicily,cand Italy as well as at home and in the far east.

The RAF Regiment were created out of a British Army fail. When the Germans invaded Crete the Army basically left the Airbase under defended, thus the Germans quickly gained air superiority and despite a huge garrison there were forced to give up the island. After this debacle Winston Churchill went mad at the army and thus he created the RAF Regiment to protect RAF installations and interests. It is a specialist role almost exclusively skilled in the art of defending.

The RAF Regiment has served in every theatre of combat the RAF has deployed to since 1942 from North Africa to Normandy to Korea, Malaya, Aden, Northern Ireland, the Falklands, Bosnia, Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan. Not many other Regiments can say the same thing.
@GregB6514511 күн бұрын
I'm a Sapper, do you want to stick or twist about other Regiments and deployments? Now they may have deployed, but it didn't mean they were anywhere interesting or risky. Distinct lack of them in the first Gulf, no sign of them in Bosnia, NI (not seen outside of the International airport), Iraq and Afghanistan where certainly not there until there was an airbase that had been secured by other units. Now they have a job and they are good at that, but its now no more than guarding fixed facilities (effectively an RAF version of MPGS) and therefore they are not exactly first on the list for a break the doors down deployment until another regiment (that may have not deployed to those places you listed) has secured it. Sort of makes your argument moot...

Sometimes, they can be a JTAC and call in air support. Other times, they can provide some search and rescue to downed aircrew. Some RAF Regiment can support the UKSF in providing more manpower. They can recon as well.
@chrisbamborough2226 ай бұрын
The RAF Police Guard Airfields that's their job. The RAF Regt are tasked to form a defence away from the Airfield on likely lines of enemy advance. That's the actual role . If they as now are used in other ways that's down to numbers and the percieved threat splitting the small number into various roles to keep the Regiment going. Other small units in the Forces also take on Roles to keep in existence. The RAF Regt was formed so the army could free up resources during WW2 when they needed troops quite often leaving Airfields undefended. Training and organisation of RAF Regt was set up by the Guards for ranks and the Royal Marines for Officers. During WW2 it numbered 80,000 all round the world. It's a task that evolved as needed. I look at it as a nucleus now kept for when an increase may be needed. So if things do kick off and conscription comes wherever those F35 b land in dispersed positions or any other air assets it will be forward of those positions in numbers to protect against ground attack and a certain amount of anti Air attack ability. This necessary role will free up the Army from this task a normal defence for which the RAF Regt is trained . Everyone has a Role. You could do some reading on the Burma campaign where the RAF Regt repelled the Japanese keeping their daily attacks away from the Airfields to allow the needed Air Support to continue. Everyone in the Forces has a Role those roles support each other.@ubiquitousubiquitous3843

manzilla48 , join the Paras if you have the IQ of a tin of peas , join the RM if you want to be the best and can handle discomfort , join RAF reg if you want 5 mins of discomfort then a lot more opportunities ;-)

RAF Reg need to up their game. Make training harder to pass. They need to do more to earn more respect. When i was in the raf they all thought they were rockhard fanny magnets. And they ALL looked down on anybody who wasn't one of them! Laughable really.

I mean dont get ne wrong, its probably alright and being the RAF you for sure get looked after than the other forces but if you have been in the Military these guys are just a laughing stock for everyone else, wether they deserve that or not.
