The southern end of the Vicksburg Battlefield receives less attention from visitors, but that does not take away from its beautiful landscape and historical importance. Join Garry Adelman and Dr. Chris Mackowski for a recap of the action surrounding the Railroad Redoubt and Vicksburg preservation stories. #vicksburgtour
This video is part of our commemoration of the 160th Anniversary of the Vicksburg Campaign. Videos will be added from now until the beginning of July. To view the full set of tours, visit: • Vicksburg Campaign: 16...
The American Battlefield Trust preserves America’s hallowed battlegrounds and educates the public about what happened there and why it matters. We permanently protect these battlefields for future generations as a lasting and tangible memorial to the brave soldiers who fought in the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Civil War.

The Texas monument dedicated in 1961? More of the work of the United Daughters of the Confederacy? Thanks for this great presentation, wonderful passion and you blend the narrative of events, with interpretation of how our memory of them has been passed down. First class. Best regards from Tasmania.

The UDC ladies keep the memories of Confederate soldiers alive. They are not evil most are active ladies in their churches. Just want you to remember it wasn't all Grant and Sherman.

The rolling hills make it hard to imagine how the fighting played out as you can't see very much of the battlefield from one place.

Met a guy from Tasmania when I was touring the Gettysburg battlefield last year. I made a 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon connection between the battle and Tasmania. George Custer fought at Gettysburg. In the movie, "They Died With Their Boots On", Custer was portrayed by Errol Flynn, who was from Tasmania.

@@BillCuddy Nice work. There was a surprising amount of travelling between California and eastern Australia in the mid/late 1800s, there may be some interesting stories waiting to be found.

Me and my dad visited every battlefield throughout my childhood to teenage years. Vicksburg is the one we always went to the most since it was close by when we lived in Texas. Now I'm in Nebraska. Hoping to go see Little Big Horn once all of my moving in is finished. We're of Teton Lakota Sioux blood too :-) which I am still happy to see you visited there prior! Still? Being Texans we always tried to visit the battlefields our ancestors fought on. Both Blue and Grey. Random fact. That is the largest Texas Monument outside of Texas. Vicksburg is just beautiful.... seriously some of the best and most well maintained earth works of any battlefield. I know you boys are always in Gettysburg come the fourth of July, but? Have you ever been in Vicksburg on the fourth? In all of my life I have never seen a more quiet city on that day. Crazy how even 160 years later the pain of that surrender still holds some roots there. Just goes to show you how the war in a way still holds such sway over people even today. I wish my dad was alive to see how awesome American Battlefield trust has become!!!! He passed in 97, but was a avid supporter since 88 after hearing of y'all on one of our visits to Gettysburg :-) great video!!! I love watching them!

What is cool is after you visit all the big battlefieds, you start going to the smaller ones, that each have their own interesting features. We recently toured the Lexington, Wilson Creek, Athens and Athens Battlefield (which occurred on the Des Moines River right across from Iowa). Lexington was particularly interesting since the Confederates under Sterling Price who were besieging a smaller group of Union troops comprised of German and Irish immigrants took use of the abundant hale bays on the farm they were on, wetted them down and pushed them toward the Union lines which shielded them from Union fire. Pretty smart.

McClernand was a blow hard - Grant may dispute whether or not he actually had his colors planted on the works that day - just ask E. C. Fields, the outstanding Grant interpreter…
@MickeyJWind
@MickeyJWind Жыл бұрын
McClernand was a good operational general officer. he got the most of his men and generally fought his troops well. I do not like the comment about he was hard to like. His men really did like him. those that followed him would certainly disagree. this is a comment that comes from the popular west pointers who did not like him and wrote most of history. The only reason he was fired was because he was a possible threat to higher commands as a replacement. He was replaced mainly for this reason. i would argue that no other officer as effective as him were fired. He went the same way as Hooker in 64 and for similar reasons. Both were sent on their way when they were performing well and both were popular with their men

It’s a combination. Most of what you are seeing is the natural terrain as most of the earth works are gone. You are still seeing some of them though.
