The bravery by both of these fleets, but especially the Arkansas. They were really ready to sink the entire union fleet alone or die trying.

It is one thing to take an elite ship and crew into action against impossible odds. It is quite another level of bravery to take a ship which is deficient in almost every way, with broken down engines, thin armor, second hand guns, a green crew, and defective ammunition into such a battle, and win.

Being in those ironclads sounds like hell. All those guys definitely had severe PTSD for the rest of their lives.

40 artillery men from Missouri volunteered to take it from Yaazoo to Vicksburg and 30 of them were dead by the time it got there. It took an absolute beating from boats as well as the entire siege structure on the banks. And the ship itself didn’t take any damage it was just the gunner openings that got them killed because of how much beating they were getting hit with, the Arkansas only fired back a few times. All in about 36 hours, one of the most hellish things I’ve ever read about

My ancestor was on the union ironclad St. Louis/Baron de Kalb and saw service from Paducah, Ft. Donelson, Island No. 10, Vicksburg and the Yazoo expedition and afterward. His life after the war was marked by a reputation for simmering belligerence which tore apart his family and alienated his wife and daughter until his death in 1926. If he wasn't deaf from the cannons he definitely suffered from PTSD.

I don't envy the men who had to work on the early ironclads. Regardless of which side they were on. Because it was just so dangerous.

This was the best ironclad the confederacy built. It only fought in two engagements but it scared Farragut into the gulf. No other ironclad withstood the beating this thing took. The assault on Baton Rouge was a mistake. It’s remains sit in a breaking yard in baton rouge to this day but it’s probably not worth salvaging because it’s rotting away in a pile of ancient barges. You wouldn’t know even what you were dredging up.

It's hard to imagine being a stoker on any of these ships, filling the boilers with coal or wood or anything combustible, working in the stifling heat and unbreathable air. The conditions for those sailors were bad enough, but when you combine the time required to refill a ships coal bunkers and the logistical challenge of maintaining the massive number of bases needed to keep ships full of coal, you start to see why navies were eager to power ships with oil.

It says everything about Confederate fortunes in the West that by 1862 their plan had been reduced to „we have one ironclad* of questionable quality and if we fight really hard we can go up against the entire union fleet of 5 Ironclads, 2 rams and half a dozen sloops“. ‘Fight really hard‘ is always the fallback for armies that have no way to actually win. The only time that ever works is if you outnumber the opposition. *or not so iron-clad

I know that this isn't entirely related but this makes me wonder why after Hampton roads the csa blew up the Virginia it could have gone up the James river as far as Richmond and been safe and could have helped to protect the city and maybe stop grant from crossing the James in 1864
@WarhawkYT
@WarhawkYT Жыл бұрын
The Virginia got stuck trying to do just that and they had to destroy lest she be captured by the union
@jeffbybee5207

The virgina had a draft of 23 feet. The pilots said it could be no more than 18 feet to go up the james. They managed to do so exposing the hull below the sheild. The pilots then said the wind was blowing the wrong way and the draft still to much. The army abandon Norfork with out notifieing the virgina and with no time to either Ballesteros for battle or try to lighten the ship any more since the plan depended on crossing Hampton roads in the dark she was taked to cranny Island west of the Elizabeth River so the crew could retreat to Confederate lines and burned. Fire reached the magazine while the crew walked to drewerys bluff
@talamioros
@talamioros 2 жыл бұрын
why'd you stop before the end of the Arkansas though? It was just a little bit more (even if there was no fighting) but instead it ends on a cliffhanger. Would've been a fitting closure to the narrative.

Awesome video. I've been waiting for an episode about Arkansas for a long time, and it was worth it. A ship that defied all odds. Such a shame that she was made by the confederacy and not the union. Also fun fact: her steam engines were takes off of two twenty-year-old locomotives that were i belive kept for spare parts. I'd also like to mention, that Carondelet's story is as intresting as Arkansas's

this Porter guy seems useless. We probably never hear about him again. The CW is just such a ballet of bravery and incompetence on all sides, especially early on. But also on all sides a unbelievable bickering and infight between Generals. And of innovations that just have find their way yet. It also shows the wisdom of seperating your army from your navy. IF you can get beyond the aforementioned bickering and infight and make them work together (hopefully) to their best abilities..
