How should a lyricist or songwriter[jazz, pop and some dance] decide whether to buy synths like Korg, Mini/Micro Brutes, Roland Go pianos etc., or decide to use software like Reason, Live, with Midi controllers and laptops? I don't know why I'm having a hard time deciding as all of these choices will present real learning curve for me. Thanks.

I'd say try to go to a music shop you can trust. Where they are not pushy. See if any instrument feels good and go with that. If it doesn't work out you at least have a base for what you like and don't like. I find the computer world is personally overwhelming, so I try to treat it like time going into the studio. I should be practiced so I can spend time recording and offering volume adjustments/tweaks. Everyone is different, but that is how I have slowly started getting better. Watch KZbin tutorials for the workstations you are interested. Download the trials and see if they work with anything you'd like to make. One step at a time. Hope that helps you on your journey!

Which do you recommend between the earthquaker device rainbow machine or interstellar orbit drive for the microkorg?

I think the Interstellar Orbiter filter can really open up more filter sounds on the microKORG. I really like how the two compliment each other.
