There were weapons that, for various reasons, were produced on a far smaller scale in WWII.
Sometimes in such small numbers that they were considered a rarity, unknown to the general public.
Here's a list of the top five rare guns of World War Two that you may have never heard of:

You have to remember that firearm production wasn't very streamlined for efficiency prior to the war. Stamped metal parts on guns were just starting to become a thing when America entered the war. By the end of the war it was quite common to see stamped metal parts on firearms (good examples being the M3 Grease gun and StG44). Before that the process was strictly milling which was very costly and time consuming. You even saw some of the first use of plastics and resins like bakelite in firearms such as the MP40.

I have a repro FG42, and it shoots extremely well. Recoil from the 8mm round is minimal: the muzzle brake is very effective; and the straight receiver/stock design helps. Years ago, when stationed in Germany I talked to FJ veterans and asked about this weapon. They said, pretty much what the video says: great weapon, not enough of them. Though they primarily used it as a semi-auto rifle as in full-auto it was difficult to control.
@MrDwarfpitcher
@MrDwarfpitcher 2 жыл бұрын
Difficult in full auto? Also when prone using the bipod? I always figured that the Bipod was needed for such a heavy recoil on the light gun. But I never got the chance to ask if that was true or not.
@VertietRyper
@VertietRyper Жыл бұрын
@@MrDwarfpitcher well the Bipod is because it was designed to replace some paratroopers' Kar98k. They used the semi-auto with it as they also issued scopes with them (at times). The angled grip and Bipod at the end of the barrel reflect that design consideration. However, these features were less favored because they made the full auto less comfortable as bipods on machineguns tend to be better slightly towards the receiver iirc

Well for a gun lighter than the Gewehr 41, I'd expect the Full-auto fire option only being used for close-quarters if they somehow found themselves in those cramped spaces.

There was a pair of french pistols made by MAC both in 7.65 longue, the mac1935a and mac1935s, the a model was initially adopted because of higher quality than the other. However the s model was also adopted shortly after to increase the numbers of pistols they had. Then Germany invaded, and converted the french factories into German weapons factories to make walthers. Roughly 2000 of the S model were made, I personally don't know much about the a model but I have one of the s model handguns. It's sights are built into the slide and non adjustable, but its based on brownings 1911 recoil system, single stack magazine too but the ammo it uses is weaker than 9mm and closer to .380 app in power. Mine is currently inert and I'm in the process of repairing it. It fits surprisingly comfortably in the hand despite being a fairly compact pistol. I've been told that some pictures of nazis holding pistols where they're often thought to be carrying browning high powers they might actually have a Mac 1935 variant.

I actually seen the De Lisle Carbine in a museum! Didn't think it was a small production gun, but the veteran in the place said it was damn quiet, and the only real loud noises was the Nazis body dropping on the ground, the sound of the bullet hitting the helmet, and the bolt cycle.

This is one of the reasons i love Star Wars, how they used old timey guns and somehow they fit perfectly in a SciFi world, like, the FG-42's grip and stock are used as part of the Valken-38x among other iconic weapons, im glad to also see their using modern firearms for future ST blasters.

SE4 mostly deals with German Paratroopers though and it would have been at the height of production since it deals with the invasion of Italy. It's still too many yes but at least they did try to make it a little more accurate. As example by 1943 almost 6000 FG42s were produced, 9000ish in total by the end of the war, huge drop off in production from the allies kicking the axies' arses. FG 42 is still the best battle rifle on the market though, less recoil than a G3, FAL and SCAR 17 at a higher rate of fire in 8 masuer. Although I do like the one InRange and Gun Jesus are trying to make more modern, I think that might be in 308 though.

The DeLisle Carbine (it was called the Hampton Carbine in the game) was the first weapon of used in action. Such a great game, plenty of stealth, plenty of humor, plenty of great background music, and hilarious death screams! 😅 I also loved the 2nd part, No One Lives Forever 2: A Spy in H.A.R.M.'s Way (or NOLF2 shortly).

I've come across an article about the mostly unknown Marlin submachine gun. I believe that article referenced a semiauto Winchester lever action carbine. John Browning saw the expelled gas moving the weeds in front of the gun and invented a system to make it cycle automatically. There was also an article how the trusty British revolver (Webley or Enfield) was converted to a semi auto. Canada ordered some thousands of Winchester 94s for their army; they had gum wood furniture instead of walnut. Strange stuff.

I would like to say, that this is an amazing video! I never knew about some of these weapons and their history. I have played ww2 games since childhood (M33) and read some amount of info about weapons of that time, but the history about some of them has eluded me. Good job!
