I saw them in Once Upon A Dream in Rochester, NY. Great show(!) and great energy. I had met Gene Cornish a few years prior and was hoping to meet the other 3, but, oh well. Eddie Brigati, after the show, was very gracious and friendly with some people after the show. A musical highlight for me! Thanks for rekindling that memory!!

Hey Matthew, I know I sound like a broken record by know, but damn dude, you blow me away with every video you do! You hooked me with The Beatles videos because they are my favorite, but you are showing me new music that I always wanted to find. I knew The Rascals not by name, but by their popular songs. I never gave them much thought to be honest. They are really diverse and touch on a variety of different music genre You totally opened my eyes to them and the album Peaceful World is a crazy cool listen! I love seeing bands like this evolve throughout the years and you always document them so perfectly, always with love dude.

@@popgoesthe60s52 Erick, I didn't know much about The Rascals beyond the hits either. Matt's videos made me have to check out those later albums, incredible stuff! In my other comment below part two, I mention two other great albums by sixties bands The Animals and The Turtles that I don't think are very well known, but have been playing on repeat in my house. They're known for the singles, but there are no albums by all three of these bands in the Rolling Stone's top 500 albums. One of the finer things in life, discovering awesome "new" old music!

As an Italo/American I can concur: "They must have been Italian!!!" MATT: Thank you so much for such a wonderful trilogy of videos covering the history of The Rascals. I used to love their singles growing up in the Bay Area in the 60's and had some of their albums too. Your videos reminded me why i had liked them so much - though I haven't listened to them in years. Eddie Brigati (and David) such superb vocalists. I really loved their more R&B/(almost) Motown sounding music very much. That organ was magnificent. Ireally must go back and order some of the goods you described - it would be nice to hear them again. A bit of a sad ending but even the Columbia excerpts you played sounded good to me, That's life!!! Further, I really must commend you on your posts - I have never been disappointed and have felt continuously interested throughout each video. Thank you so much for your work and research - it is greatly appreciated.

Great video. I saw "Once Upon A Dream" In NYC and it was a real treat for me since as a musician and long time Rascals fan, it was one on the bands I thought I would never get to see. I had seen Felix and a few of his solo bands over the years and I saw The Gene Cornish band in the mid 80's and while they were very professional and I enjoyed them, neither felt like the Rascals. On Broadway in their reunion show, I saw and heard one of the greatest live bands that ever existed. They were tight, soulful and a lot of fun and lived up to all of my highest expectations.

The Rascals were in the top 5 influential bands for upcoming bands of the time. We all wanted to be like them. Dino is one of the reasons I took up drums in the mid 60's. This is a well done history and hats off to Van Sant for bringing them back for a closing out tour while they could still perform at a quality level.

Great video!! It's a shame that the Rascals didn't connect with a more...college crowd?...heading in to the 1970s. As I recall, those last three albums put the group in a "damned if they do, damned if they don't" category. Radio was only playing the established hit singles of the group, but there was no "nostalgia" circuit for any group yet. If the group tried to put out blatant reconstructions of their old sound as singles (aka: trying to sound like themselves) they'd be scrutinized. By the same token, when they tried to break away and adapt to a different sound...they were scrutinized. As a result, their albums SEARCH AND NEARNESS, PEACEFUL WORLD and THE ISLAND OF REAL were seemingly disregarded by fans, and the record labels they were issued on. Copies seem to be immediately put in the $1.99 bin, or used as placemats at fast food restaurants. 😆Fortunately, their entire catalog was reexamined by the late 1980s, much to the band's credit.

Matt, Big thanks for another great series. I had not heard of the Rascals signed with Atlantic, but it showed that the band were smart enough to trust their own instincts. That "Groovin'" was released against Atlantic's wishes just proves that the Rascals knew what they were doing. I thought making "Once Upon a Dream" was a smart move as it proved they were not just a singles bnad. Not that any inteeligent listener could miss the fact that these guys were musicians firts and foremost. And, like Matt, I thought/still think that "See" was their best album. Watching these three episodes was certainly not time wasted!

Excellent job you did here in this series of the Rascals. I was not aware of some of their later albums that I will definitely look for to purchase, as the bits you played would be great listening. Thank you for this series.

Thanks, Matt for a very informative series. When I watch your videos about the history of bands, I do so with pen & paper nearby so I can take notes. I certainly remember the band as I was 11 years old when they had their first hit single in 1965. But in trying to remember what happened to them in terms of what bands I followed, I think they became irrelevant (at least to me and my music-listening friends) as the 60s wore on and we grew older. By the later 60s, we were listening to Cream, Steppenwolf, and Iron Butterfly. But even other established groups like The Beatles and Rolling Stones had changed their style of music. The Rascals may have changed their style in later years, but by then they had fallen off our listening radar. Maybe not having any top 30 hits pushed them off as AM radio was king back then. Thanks again for a great series.

Yes, the Rascals fell along the wayside with scores of other 60s groups who couldn't transition to the 1970s. Thank you for the comment, John.

@@popgoesthe60s52 The mid-60s groups who were vying for the irrelevance category, didn't help themselves if they were wearing outlandish uniforms, e.g. Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs, and Paul Revere & the Raiders. The Young Rascals weren't quite as bad with their britches, but . . .

Thanks again for another great 3 part series. You mentioned Bulldog. I remember that band had a hit single (at least it got airplay in Boston at any rate) called "No". I always liked that song but had no idea it was related to The Rascals in any way. It's always cool connecting the dots, ain't it?

Buzz Feiten formed the jazz-rock-soul band Full Moon, which put out a good album in 1972 and a second in 1982. The first Fotomaker album had some knockout tracks ("Two Can Make It Work", "Say the Same For You", "Lose at Love").

Loved the Rascals history you did. I'd really like for you to do one on The Move. They had a string of hits in England and their albums were adventurous and fun but they were relatively unknown in the US before they evolved into ELO.
