In the 50s when they would perform, Vegas clubs would want Sammy to enter through the kitchen, in back. Frank said he would not perform until Sammy was allowed through the front door. I love that devotion to each other.

The "Indian" looking guy is the late, great Sammy Davis Junior. PLEASE take the time to google him and get to know him because he is of historical importance, for black people, in the world of showbiz. You might know the names Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley but there are other people who are as historically important even if they're not as famous. Not only was Sammy an excellent singer, actor and tap dancer (look up the tap dancing) he was also an activist who would march and speak out loud for black rights. He suffered much racism but managed to overcome them to break down barriers and pave the way for those coming after him. Get to know him young man, get to know! And did you hear Frank mention , Quincy Jones, the band conductor! He is the black music legend who developed that famous Frank Sinatra swing sound. He also produced all three of Michael Jacksons biggest albums and much much more!

@@JessieB_ He lost the eye in a car accident when he was driving back from a gig in Vegas to L.A., because Sammy refused to stay in Vegas while it was still segregated. He converted to Judaism while recovering from the accident. Then Sinatra said they'd all stop playing Vegas if Sammy couldn't stay at the hotel, thus integrating Las Vegas. I LOVE Sammy Davis Jr.

My darling I BEG BEG you to research the great Sammy Davis Jr. !!! Iconic he danced sang and acted. You must keep this one of a kind superior artist on your list to check out. He had to overcome segregation. The hotels in LasVegas at this time didn't permit black performers to walk through the casino's and NO way sleep or eat there. It was Sinatra that made many of the owners let him perform or he wouldn't either.

@@Msboochie2 - Well, this was recorded via closed-circuit in 1965, so Q would have been 32 at the time. Joey Bishop was supposed to be the host, but couldn't be there, so Johnny filled the spot. It was many years before the DVD was released with the entire show. I got it as soon as it came out. I still have it and digitized it as a backup. Nowadays, of course, it's all over KZbin. His running joke was he was always drunk, with a highball glass in his hand. Frank Sinatra was “The Chairman” and had mob friends (who helped build Las Vegas, where they are) thus the joke about a boss asleep upstairs

Most everything the Rat Pack did was unrehearsed. Often these shows were just 3 or 4 pros at the top of their games screwing around together and the audience was just along for the ride. No 2 shows were the same.

I remember that he had on an uncle who was a comedian (very old) and he told this story: I knew a woman who had so many face lifts that when she sat down, her mouth flew open". Probably not appropriate today, but I remember the audience was roaring at that time. It obviously made an impression on me as well, since I remember it 50 years later. Dean was so casual and smooth. He never seemed to have a care in the world, but when you saw him act in serious movies, you could see he was always acting, Just different characters. Very talented. (and he wasn't always drinking, sometimes that was ice tea in his glass). He also liked to go home or go to bed while Frank wanted to go out after the shows.

Jeff Kilbride except that Peter Lawford was President John F Kennedy’s brother-in-law and arranged Frank Sinatra’s in to the Kennedy dynasty. The result, increased pressure on JFK to back the civil rights movement. Sinatra was appalled by the treatment of Sammy Davis Jr. and added to the many voices that lobbied Kennedy to support civil rights for blacks. Besides being a talented singer and actor contracted to MGM, Lawford was an important relationship for Davis and Sinatra.

The Rat Pack was and is one of the most famous and popular entertainment acts that appeared in Vegas. The audience who got to see this incredible array of talent were so fortunate. It was a golden ticket. Of course, each one of these men were extremely famous and had incredible careers. There are live albums, which I would love to get to own, and documentaries that are fabulous. “The Rat Pack” basically made Vegas what it is today. They “controlled” Vegas. They were great entertainers, businessmen, investors but seemed to lack “family values”. Nonetheless, I don’t think Vegas would have been what it is today without the trio. They brought laughter into family homes every week via television shows.

Rumor has it that the character, Johnny Fontaine, in the movie The Godfather is loosely based on Sinatra. The movie was From Here to Eternity. In 1962 Dean Martin recorded a song on his album, Dream with Dean I think it was called. Everybody Loves Somebody had been recorded 15 years earlier by other artists, Frank Sinatra was one of them. The song never went anywhere Dean's son, Ricci was always talking about the Beatles. The Beatles this and the Beatles that. Dean finally told him "I am going to knock your pallies off the chart". Teenager Ricci just laughed. Lster that month, in August 1964 Dean released a song he had recorded a few months earlier, EVERYBODY LOVES SOMEBODY as a single. The tempo was speeded up a bit, the music was rearranged to give it a more contemporary sound. And Dean's song knocked the Beatles A Hard Days Night out of the Number one spot!! His recording of Your Nobody Till Somebody Loves You Also topped the charts in the same year . Memories Are Made of This was a number 1 pop hit in 1956. As a teenager his 2 hits in 1964 were 2 of my favorite songs and I am still a fan.

I’m sorry I don’t know your name sweetheart, but I absolutely LOVE your reaction to all these old songs, especially this one....your smile is beautiful and infectious! And you get straight into the swing of the songs...It doesn’t seem strange to us oldies who were your age and a bit older when these guys were around, and became famous as “The Rat Pack”....as others have said, you need to read up about them individually...their talent doesn’t come along any more sadly...times change. But I enjoyed watching them again, as much as you riveted to your seat right to the end. My father used to have a band back in the 50’s and played music like this...the band used to practice in our living room, so as a child I would go to sleep listening to them....was amazing I slept at all!! This group was probably the most popular performers of the day. Onenof my greatest regrets was that I never got to see Sammie Davis Jr. perform because he was one of the best if not the best performers of his day. And everyone is right when they say to research him because he has a very interesting history. Dean Martin is probably the best looking with the best singing voice of a comedian ever! Of course his singing career and his acting rivaled that of his comedian years. Johnny Carson WAS the Tonigjt Show and there was never anyone before or since as good in late night talk shows. I did not know he could sing however and someone else mentioned he was not part of the famous rat pack. You already know about Frand Sinatra. Frank Sinatra's daughter had one hit song called "these boots are made for walking". Many felt it showed her lack of singing talent but I always liked it. You are an amazing young man. I admire your willingness to explore all genres and to appreciate each one. But what I admire most is your work ethic and taking a brillent idea and running with it. Good luck sweetie!!

Back in the day, these guys were THE guys. Sammy Davis Jr was my absolute favorite. While on vacation with my parents in the Bahamas, Sammy was performing in the hotel’s nightclub. I begged my Dad, and he got tickets to take me to see Sammy. I was only 8 or 9, but I was so thrilled to see him perform. I think it was 1969, and I remember my Mom sitting next to his Mom at the pool. Sammy was my first “concert”. I will never forget it. He was amazing. “The Candy Man” was a favorite that he sang. Sammy Davis Junior!! He's black!! Love him so much! You need to listen to his song's!! Dean Martin & Frank Sinatra! They loved each other!! They did this act early in the AM like 3-5 AM!! Also they made the original Oceans 11 movie. You should watch it!! Johnny Carson was not part of the rat pack!!

Sammy Davis Jr. was a multi talented man...great tap dancer and stag performer of Afro-Cuban and Spanish culture. He was an amazing singer , played the drums, trumpet, piano, and dramatic actor. He was a blues singer under the pseudonyms Shorty Muggins and Charlie Green. Sammy served his country during WWII. He performed on stage, TV, AND Movies. Mr. Davis was truly a talented and very gifted man. ❤️

I'm 60 years old and my parents said that Sammy Davis taught Frank Sinatra how to sing. Don't get me wrong, Frank Sinatra was a HUGE singing star before he ever met Mr. Davis BUT Mr. Sinatra was known as a "crooner" that teenage girls idolized. It was only after he met Mr. Davis that his style and phrasing became the iconic style we know today.

Came across your videos just lately and I just have to say, black or white, you know good music when you hear it young man. I grew up with most of the music you are reacting to. Musically, it was a golden time to be alive and hear them for the first time. Watching the joy on your face as you listen and the respect you show the artists is so heartwarming. Well done !
