I absolutely love this series as a whole, not so much as individual books in said series. It's what made me realise what YA has the potential to be and how much I value atmosphere and character development rather than plot. I think it's a great transitional series between age groups for that reason, and because the relationships feel so real, probably unlike anything I've ever read before

Stiefvater is definitely among the authors I point to when people say YA has nothing of substance to offer

I’m 99% sure that The Raven Boys takes place April 24th to beginning of summer, The Dream Thieves is summer, Blue Lily, Lily Blue is the beginning of their senior year (so fall), and The Raven King ends their senior year. So it’s a little over a year.

I. LOVE. THIS. SERIES. SO. MUCH. Her writing style, the nuances, the relationships! Please 😭 Yeah, plot is so hard to explain 😂 It’s like “technically it’s about this group of mistfits following a guy named Gansey on his quest to find a dead dude BUT ACTUALLY … it’s about how the bond of 5 friends as well as how they change as individuals” … or 😂something

LOL you really don't see the school, I only remembered they're still students when Adam had to work multiple jobs to pay for it
@LienesLibrary3 жыл бұрын
yeah, it's mainly adam's financial struggles that make you think of the school at all - that and Ronan constantly trying to drop out 😂

Tried The Raven Boys, will give it another go. Harry Potter books and movies became everyone's when they were published, we can and should enjoy and talk about them. Everything else jkr makes or says can and should be ignored.

I'm always tempted to give anything you recommend a try because your taste probably is the most similar to mine that I've found on booktube, but prose like that can be so hit or miss for me... For example I loved the flowery language of NotW and Strange the Dreamer, but Starless Sea and How to Lose the Time War were just... blegh. 😅 But maybe it was the latters' lack of plot...? If her metaphorical language is a little too contrived it will probably grate me the wrong way, but who knows, maybe I'll love it. I'll tentatively put it on my list of things to try out!

I just finished The Starless Sea and I hated it - but I love NotW and anything Laini Taylor 😁

Interesting video, I read this series and really enjoyed it even though I don't really like meandering in books, but maybe that's a lie because i've read some more that seemingly go nowhere and enjoyed. hmm

Could you please elaborate on the school situation a bit more? 😂 I’ve only read the first one - liked it, didn’t love it, but that may be because I’m not a huge fan of Urban Fantasy in general.

it's weird to hear this referred to as "urban fantasy" given how NOT urban their environment is in the books 😂

No Henrietta, Virginia. There is a Henrietta, West Virginia, but I suspect the town in these books is fictional.

I find most of Stiefvater's books (that I've read) have that vibey writing - The Scorpio Races in particular 👌
@IfThisWasANovel3 жыл бұрын
There really is nothing else like it (apart from Maggie’s other books), but I do recommend The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden and also Neil Gaiman for sort of similar writing. They’re both very different, but I think Arden is very atmospheric in a similar way to Maggie and Gaiman has the same tendency to craft very intentional sentences that are clever or beautiful or that mean two things at once - or all of those things together. His writing looks at humans in the same sort of way Maggie’s does, if that makes sense.
@dmuse38133 жыл бұрын
Noticed this the other day at the bookstore but didn’t pick it up. This sounds intriguing. Metaphors and imagery work for me. By the way, which is your favorite Gaiman book? I haven’t read much of his but have noticed you’ve mentioned how he is one of your favorite authors.

Gaiman IS my favorite author haha - my two favorite things he's written are Ocean at the End of the Lane and The Graveyard Book 🧡

I did not expect such J.K. Rowling comment on this channel. Seemed rational and not that much into following what is politically correct now or whenever. Unless it was a tongue in cheek comment, then please clarify.
