Lovely QSK19 engines. Same engines in the 180s and 185s, although those two are straight DMU, not DEMU.

The 810s certainly have a huge task to keep up with the 222s! Shouldn’t be a problem in electric mode; but it’ll be a challenge in diesel. The 222s certainly have set the bar high.

@@brunaskarting116 the 810s had to have their engines uprated (from what the 802 have) to keep up with the 222s power! The 802 itself is uprated from the 800. The 810s also have 4 engines instead of the 3 engines 5 car 800 and 802s have.

@bedfordshireeastmidlandstrains - yep, I am very much aware of the 810’s construction and power specifications; however more power doesn’t necessarily mean quicker performance. For example, the 810s have to lug around two different traction systems. Nevertheless, I meant “keep up” in more then one sense - the 222s have served the MML for nearly 2 decades and have done that with aplomb; so they’re a very tough act to follow. It’s all theoretical at the minute anyway - full introduction into service won’t be until December 2025; so we have a while to wait yet!

@TrainsbyM I love trains that are loud and fast I really hate quite sounding ones especially new electric ones I prefer old electric trains the ones from the 1980s and 1990s

Yep they have certainly given impeccable service to the MML over the past nearly 20 years. The 810s have a tough act to follow.

That's impressive. As there are nothing else moving, just for fun, you can set the speed to 2x and it really takes off.

There is a mini refurbishment currently happening, in that standard class seat covers are being replaced; although the aim behind that is not to benefit EMR, more in order to fulfil end-of-lease requirements or for the ROSCO to make them more marketable in order to find a home for them post-EMR.

We all know it isn't going to happen, but I'd love to see part of the fleet take over EMR services that are considered more "regional". Personally, I'd love to see them retaining the 222 104 and several other units for services like the one to Liverpool, and other lowercase intercity services; converting more units to the all purple EMR livery... But in the end, we all know the entire fleet will be retired from EMR, and we can only hope they'll have a prosperous future at operators like Grand Central and Cross Country!

the 222s have better acceleration, as they don't have the weight of the tilting mechanisms and they have general improvements over the 221s internally, such as a lot of wiring being moved underneath instead of inside the cabin iirc.

@@TrainsbyM I do look forward to getting a closer look at the 810s, apparently the interiors will be far better than the rest of the Hitachi AT300 UK 80x IEP family interiors we've seen so far, and apparently the seats will be a considerable improvement in terms of comfort, but I can't say I'm convinced given EMRs very clickbaity videos on the seats so far.

@devon896 - won’t happen due to the 222s’ incompatibility with the 220s & 221s and XC have had to fight hard to get the 7 extra 221s from Avanti; so I doubt the DfT will give them anything else.

Unfortunately these trains are noisy and uncomfortable compared to the 125 HST that they replaced on this line (even in First Class).

@@mgsee Well if you got yourself a rattler, had that on a 221 recently, you're in for an unpleasant journey, I have to agree. But a well maintained one, and then I want to be as close as possible on top of the engine as possible. That's just an immaculate experience to a diesel lover like me! The HSTs are great trains though ofcourse! 🥰

@@TrainsbyM I can appreciate the lovely sound of a diesel/electric engine myself, growing up we had a train line at the end of our back garden, and I always knew what type of train was approaching by the sound of it's engine. However as a passenger I prefer a quiet ride (especially in First Class) and not having the drone of an engine under my seat.

221s and 220s on XC aren’t good as they get very crowded, the 222s don’t get very crowded and can actually be comfortable, you don’t just need First Class, I’ve been on both and First Class is better but Standard is right behind
