Transpennine Express Class 185 with a clear run from Thirsk to York.
Engine - Cummins QSK19, 750bhp
Transmission - Voith T 312 bre
These are powerful trains - each engine delivers 750bhp, compared to around 285-400bhp from your typical British Rail Sprinter diesel multiple unit. The engines have a deep, bassy note which can be heard and felt from the outside as well as inside.
Well worth a ride if you haven't experienced one. As time goes by it seems there are less opportunities to get a good fast run on one - electric Class 350s and Class 68 hauled carriages often appear on the services where they can reach 100mph. The sheer weight of the Class 185s means they are sometimes subject to lower speed limits off the mainlines than Sprinters. And if you're unlucky, you'll be sitting in a carriage where the engine stops powering once it reaches a certain speed while those under the other carriages do the work.

I think the 185s are the best DMUs in the UK, smooth, quick relaxing & they sound fantastic even though TPE have new trains, they still use the 185s the most

For me, the Class 185 Desiro is my favourite train to hop on board and ride with! Whether this is for either commuting or for fun.

If they pull away well they can be already doing 75mph passing St Helens Junction from a stop at Lea Green which is about a mile or so they just change gear when they pass my house at around 60mph. they’ll do well more than 100mph if the gearing was longer probably do around 115-120 flat out as they are factoring in the 10% minimum overspeed.

The Class 185 Desiro are very smooth. Siemens who built the Class 185 Desiro DMUs for the North of England could of continued with manufacturing more Desiro DMUs. Including Wales, Scotland, Southwest England, West Midlands, East Midlands, East of England and Southern England. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Rail_Class_185

Overweight and overpowered, unable to use Sprinter line speeds, significant increase in fuel supply compared to Class 158 units and they also lose two seats per coach due to Siemens designing the exhaust to take up part of the interior space. Not a good unit and one that will be hard to cascade as they get older. Back in 2004\2005 Class 170 units would have been far better as an order than these non-standard heavy units.

They were designed to be overpowered so they could climb the Pennines easier 170s would have really struggled to get up hills.

@@darylyatestransportblogs It has to be recalled that when Class 170 units worked the Man-Hull services they kept time with Class 185 units and could use SP speed differentials. Also look at the South Pennine route EMT Class 158 units are not slower than the heavyweight 185's.

​@@slavoslav9175 Wanted to repeat at least five times, as this number would match the RA (Route Availability) number of the Class 185 heavyweight units. To give you an idea how bad this is an RA figure of five is equivalent to a Class 37, 43 and even 55. This is how heavy the units are whilst a Sprinter unit of a sensible weight would have an RA figure of two.
